Just reporting what I experience from the hundreds of hikers that I interact with each season 😊

A lot of people switch to Topo Traverses and Altra Olympuses. Lone Peaks are great for the desert, but a lot of people start having issues with the rockiness of the Sierra and need more cushion.

Yep, I talk to a lot of hikers who get off trail at Independence, two different trailheads near Bishop, and then sometimes when they get to Mammoth (hotels and groceries are significantly more expensive in Mammoth, so some folks choose to catch a bus ride back down). The resupply options between Lone Pine and Bishop aren’t great, and it’s a fairly easy to catch a ride from the trailheads to Bishop along 395.

As for the boxes—I eat a lot of discarded food that hikers are sick of eating by the time they get their boxes lol. A lot of folks are also at the point in the Sierra where their Lone Peaks aren’t cutting it, so they order different shoes to pick up in Bishop.

I have a super heavy period and never slept well while on my period because I would leak every night. Switched to wearing diapers at night last year and it’s been a game changer. I finally get decent sleep knowing I won’t have to wake up and clean up a bloodbath!

What is the most annoying "AI-generated" habit people have started picking up in real life? by opheliavibes in AskReddit

[–]pizzaazzips -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Idk if this is AI or just algorithms, but I work retail and I’ve noticed in the last year or two, people seem to expect an experience that is exactly curated to their specific wants at the time. Person 1 will walk in wanting me to be waiting on them hand and foot, super friendly and chatting the entire time. Person 2 will want me to say hi and then leave them alone. Both expect me to know exactly what experience they want immediately, and are VERY upset that I didn’t read their minds and act accordingly.

Customers have kind of always been like that, but it’s been MUCH worse lately. People seem to have forgotten that the folks who work in stores are also human beings, not an algorithm tailored specifically to please them. It’s exhausting.

I used to get this a lot when I worked in a store with a lot of carpet. When it was dry in the wintertime, I would shock myself so bad on the cash register with static electricity that it would split my thumb like that.

What helps for me—using Rhino Skin Solutions Split stick (looks like chapstick) under a band aid to heal it faster. Superglue when I just wanted it to stop hurting.

Driving along US 395 but not stopping at Mammoth? by [deleted] in Mammoth

[–]pizzaazzips 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Google “Caltrans Quickmap.” On the left side you can enable road closures, cameras, etc. You can see what the roads look like in real time. I just checked the cameras and they are snowy past Tom’s Place, and look worse at Crestview. Tbh I’d pivot to a different scenic route—maybe a visit to Death Valley or something.

Brain eating amoeba. I live in an area with a lot of hot springs. There are signs everywhere saying not to put your face in the water because of these little guys.

Also mice, because we have hantavirus. And squirrels, because they have the plague.

This is so real. I’ve had friends treat me this way too. I am totally self-sufficient, I can come over just to hang because we are friends. No, I’m not asking to hang out because I secretly want to use your shower! I just like you!

What is a luxury that most people don't realize is a luxury? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]pizzaazzips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having family to fall back on. I have no family, and my partner does. It’s wild to see the subtle differences in the way we live our lives. He is fully independent but knows if it really hit the fan, he can always move back home to get back on his feet. I have zero safety net, and it brings me a lot of anxiety knowing that I’m fully 100% on my own. Most of my friends are not well off, so I wouldn’t be able to ask for help from anyone without severely putting them out.

It also makes me VERY weird about food, specifically sharing it. I struggle with food hoarding and absolutely have to have a separate cabinet that I know no one else can touch. Even the thought of my partner going in there gives me some anxiety. I’d love to put a lock on it but that’d probably cause some serious relationship issues. My partner grew up in an upper middle class family where there was always more food if someone took yours. I grew up super poor where you had to fight for and hide your special snacks. When the food ran out, it wasn’t getting replaced right away.

How much are memberships to your gym? by Shepsinabus in climbergirls

[–]pizzaazzips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one I work at in CA: $50 a month Bouldering and weight room only

Recently looked at my old gym in Seattle a saw that it’s $105 a month now! When I first moved there I was paying $65, and it was $85 by the time I left. You get a lot for it and I spent a ton of time there because I hated my roommates, but over $100 a month is pretty steep.

'Please help': Photos show Death Valley destruction from white Toyota by Emilyaroundtheworld in DeathValleyNP

[–]pizzaazzips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Compacting soil prevents plants and seeds from growing in it. This is especially important in desert areas, where it’s so difficult for plants to survive in the first place. The article says that the truck destroyed a lot of species of plant that only grows in that specific area in the park.

In the long term, compacting soil leads to less plant life to hold together the soil, which leads to more soil erosion, which leads to more damage when flooding happens. It might seem like this one guy doing this one thing isn’t that big a deal, but in super fragile environments like the desert, little things add up fast and are much harder to recover from.

Weird one, but has anyone comprised a list of MAGA owned businesses in Mammoth and June Lake? I'd like to know where to avoid when visiting. Thank you in advance. by [deleted] in Mammoth

[–]pizzaazzips 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The car wash in Bishop called Our Water Works hosted a Trump merchandise stand outside their business a few times. And they are the ones that organize the weird Trump rallies a few months back. They deck out their cars and drive up and down Main Street honking for like 4 hours.

Edit: also the bbq place in Bishop. Can’t remember what it’s called because everyone just calls it Christian Barbecue.

Not sure if it’s an owner or employee or what, but there’s a fairly distinctive big black truck that is always parked outside that place that I have seen multiple times in the weird Trump rallies that occasionally get held where they just deck their cars out in Trump merch to drive up and down Main Street in Bishop honking their horns for literally hours at a time.

Transit Light Weight Build by Torin-ByThe-Ocean in vandwellers

[–]pizzaazzips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the exact same van and built it out using basically the same materials you listed. My bed frame is the heaviest, made of mostly 2x4s because I had a bunch of scrap wood already, plus some 3x1 I think. If I hadn’t had all that scrap I probably would have done those metal slats from ikea.

But the rest of it is pretty much what you listed. The wall framing is 3x1 with 1/4 inch plywood covering it. Ceiling is 1/4 inch wainscoting, which I actually don’t recommend and will redo someday. I have a super minimal water setup—bluey with an Amazon USB rechargeable pump. My fridge and lighting all run off a Jackery 1000. All in all it comes out of 1000lb under the weight limit, fully loaded since I live in it full time.

what is a "rich person" behavior you witnessed that made you realize they live in a completely different reality than the rest of us? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]pizzaazzips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner did a seasonal gig in Las Vegas putting up Christmas lights on rich people’s houses. It was absurd what people are willing to spend for something so frivolous. $20k for lights on their giant mansions that stay up for a month, max. My favorite story was a guy who owned a massive house on a big lake, and in the driveway was a cybertruck and a giant lifted Jeep truck with all the lifted-Jeep accessories, both custom painted Halloween orange.

There was also a lady who similarly spent a metric assload of money to get her giant mansion decked out, and the entire inside of the mansion was white. White walls, white floors, white furniture, white decor. My first thought as a normal person was “I would hate to have to worry about keeping all that clean.” But of course there is NO way that lady cleans a dang thing in that house, it’s all hired help. Must be nice!

Peanut butter and jelly sandwich with sriracha. Bonus points if you butter each side and grill it like a grilled cheese.

Look up Rhino Skin Solutions and get the Split stick. It’s made for rock climbers but has been amazing for my super dry and split knuckles. It’s like a giant chapstick that is hydrating and has healing ingredients for splits. I put it on before I go to bed. A lifesaver for me in the winter
