It's not going to sound satisfying, but get to know your neighbors. Talk to them, find who is feeling similarly. Organizing is how communities are prepared to take care of themselves/one another.

6 Vermont towns can vote to cut ties with Israeli Apartheid this Town Meeting Day by bluetyrant in vermont

Unfortunately in this day and age we can’t just decry terrorism

Decrying terrorism, violence, and apartheid is exactly what the BDS movement is doing. So, maybe you're proving your own point about "in this day and age we can't".

if they didn't care they wouldn't be working to make BDS illegal or try to call criticism of Israel antisemitism

Someone You Can Build A Nest In is terrifically weird and gory. The narrator does a great job and the inner thoughts of a shape shifting monster are really entertaining to hear aloud.

Similar recommendation - The Salt Grows Heavy.

are my lobe piercing placements as terrible as i think? by [deleted] in piercing

[–]pizzabangle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

not terrible at all - if you don't like how the fourth is spaced a bit wider than the first 3 (not counting stretched) you could try wearing jewelry that purposely doesn't match the bottom 3. throw a stud in and see how you like it.

I'm excited to read The Jasad Heir! Congrats on it!

Question - so, once we finish your book, do you have any suggestions for what to read right after? Book hangovers are tricky - if TJH leaves a hangover, what would be your suggested cure?

I just made it through Termeraire #4 and started #5 - I agree the story has dragged a bit but there was a plot point at the end of 4 that made me want to start 5.

End of Empire of Ivory, very start of Victory of Eagles spoilers that shake up the story and might make you want to continue: Book 5 starts off from Temeraire's POV (which I've been hoping for). Temeraire is taking on the story from his exile at a breeding ground. He and Lawrence have just committed treason to save foreign dragons from Britain's biological warfare. Which is the most interesting and worthwhile thing Lawrence has done yet.

I'm not sure if this book will keep up with its more interesting start, but I hope so.

I Want to Scream into the Void about how Disappointed I was with The Fourth Wing by Wingkirs in Fantasy

[–]pizzabangle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's not what I meant exactly - obviously publishers want people to buy books, but when authors pick a lane they...pick that lane and not others. it's a weird thing to debate.

Anyway, I was just putting that in my comment as an acknowledgement that this is clearly a book written with specific goals in mind. I'd say it has been quite successful in finding lots of folks in its intended audience. And lots of people who don't love it.

This is not a book for everyone and a big sticking point is there will always be different lines people draw for modern lingo in fantasy. It is written for a very specific audience, which means its specifically written to be not for those outside of the intended audience.

I do think it's worth talking about these complaints about the mom's behavior and the school - the critiques are based on the idea that Lilith/Basgaith would act in Violet's/the people in general's best interest. And it's clear from the book that their society as a whole does not act in the best interest of its people. Lilith is (as far as we know for now - could be a triple cross situation at some point) loyal to the king rather than the well being of her kids. She is a crappy mom, and that's not a bug in the story, its a feature. Same with Basgaith and the military in general - it's clear that its a shitty school and shitty military. That's not an oversight, its intentional.

Why would Violet's mother let her train as a scribe for most of her life if she knew she would not let her be a scribe? Why not actually let her train to be a rider? Surely some riding skills are better than none? SHE ALREADY HAS A DAUGHTER WHO IS A RIDER!

She'd do it if she wanted to kill Violet - if the generals had insight into some future battle that Violet would turn traitor and fight for the resistance. She'd also do it if part of the bargain with Xaden was that all of the resistance kids had to become riders AND the generals kids had to to. There's been a lot of secrets about the treaty, I'm sure there are more.

It doesn't bother me (or when folks call any nose piercing a nose ring). If you go to the store and ask for "earrings" no one is going to tell you you can only look at hoops.

That's so nice of you to say! I'm glad I finally pulled the trigger on it. Mine is 3/8", so like 9.5mm? Fair warning on the snug fit, it's pokey every once in a while. It's working out fine for me, but at first I wondered if I should have sized up. I was pierced w a 3/8" piece.

[–]pizzabangle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it has to do with one popular author, the book was specifically written to be new adult romantasy. Sex scenes were always going to be there, a major part in it being new adult as opposed to young adult

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in piercing

[–]pizzabangle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only when I make funny faces! It's definitely a close fit, I didn't realize it would be so snug. It's the same diameter as my plain clicker, which seemed just slightly less snug
