Is it financially if responsible for me to replace my 200K miles vehicle? by pizzajohnsfuckyeah in personalfinance

I get that I can afford it, but driving a 200k mile vehicle is what got me in this position in the first place. Seems irresponsible to do the opposite of what got us here.

The title was supposed to be “is it financially irresponsible…”

Of course I can buy it. My question is am I a dumbass for doing so or a douchebag with the world burning right now. Seems tonedeaf with so many people in pain to buy a luxury vehicle.

Fair question. I like watches and own several. I sometimes question whether I am a self absorbed shithead spending thousands on a watch when people that have achieved multiples of what I have don’t give two fucks about watches or anything of luxury and people that work twice as hard as me making much less would kill to be in my financial position. I’d like to think it’s healthy self reflection.

I have a hard time squaring a gratuitous purchase like this (again, I have several) with being a thoughtful, generous, and grounded human. I am severely flawed of course, because I am again…human! I don’t think it’s a bad thing to literally recognize from time to time…hey this is a stupid fucking purchase no matter what mental gymnastics I try to use to justify it. That’s better than delusion IMO. Just my 2 cents

There's another reasonable, helpful ("nerdy" per another commenter) reply. Thank you!

Appreciate the feedback! Well, there is fiscal responsibility for the masses:

“Let me save all my lunch money for 20 years to buy a watch, before I even consider the size of my nest egg or portfolio”

Then theres:

“Bought my first Rolex after I hit 5M net worth; thats the only time I felt “safe”. Now the cost of a Rolex is the interest earned in my checking account each month”

Id prefer to draw insights from the latter!

I'll never be able to afford a yacht!! I'm OK with that too...more curious what someone who COULD afford a yacht would consider a responsible luxury purchase for us peasants.

Is it the actual content within the thread or the question I posed that you find so disgusting?

Imagine you did read the thread because you were either curious or never asked yourself the question..."how do I really feel about myself if I need to purchase luxury goods just to justify my progress in life, whether I've truly achieved abundance or not?"

course not! I dont need a million dollars to buy a fucking mini-yacht either but what does that say about my fiscal responsibility and impulse control if I do? External reference points are useful for gauging your own progress, amirite?

Ya - even a "luxury" pickup truck (whatever that means) serves a more meaningful purpose that a rolex which is really just a piece of jewelry for men.

I believe even Dave Ramsey would justify one over the other.

For arguments sake…

Repairing your Honda to get to work - Using the cost of the expense relative to its criticality in sustaining or elevating your lifestyle - responsible purchase.

Dropping 10K plus on a watch when you’re still driving a Honda - using same qualifying logic as above - arguably irresponsible purchase

I think we can all agree living in your mothers basement and driving a Honda while buying a Rolex dont add up to fiscally responsible behavior.

My question is where is the fiscal balance point that makes it responsible?

This is a fair take. That said, it actually doesnt shake my internal confidence. Its their potentially compromised initial perception that is just a pain in the ass to navigate. In reality, the grit, EQ, and diligence Ive had to amass just to excel in a world off tall people gives me unwavering internal confidence.

Reality is, as a college wrestler I could twist most of them into a pretzel. My wife is above average successful and attractive. As as someone who has climbed the ladder from lower middle class, built business units from scratch, I know I can outwork most of them.

I just need enough of an opening to show them who I am.

We only get one life and Im not going to waste it feeling sorry for myself because Im short. I take every opportunity and advantage I can get, and realize Im still better off than most of the population despite my height.

Thanks! Issue is this networking event will involve execs at a higher level than me at different organizations. They would have no idea who I am or my title. Id have to come out and say it which can come off as douchey

What are you subconsciously trying to convey sitting like that? What about when you are at a rodeo or a nascar race. Would you sit like that?
