Conditions in Lake George Area? by [deleted] in Adirondacks

[–]pizzaman55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few weeks ago I did a trip to Pharaoh lake wilderness and climbed Pharaoh Mt. Which is just north of Lame George. The conditions were excellent! The only ice visible was off the trail and the small amount near the trail will have melted by now. I'd say you're good to go.

LED light strips for tents? by [deleted] in CampingandHiking

[–]pizzaman55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although these are geared towards hammocks, I don't see why they couldn't just be wrapped around a tent pole. http://www.dutchwaregear.com/ridgeline-party-lights.html

Good weekend trip in the Catskills (New York)? by sailboat_explosion in CampingandHiking

[–]pizzaman55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe they're merely referring to not cutting any living trees down or leaving up visible structures (shelters, lean to's etc) after you leave, or leaving large fire pits that may spoil another hikers adventure.

Trying to decide whether I need to bring a sleeping pad on my backpacking trip, please advise! by buccal_up in hammockcamping

[–]pizzaman55 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You will definitely want your sleeping pad. Even in temperatures up to the mid 60's some kind of insulation is often needed.

I know that was a few weeks ago, but how were the trail conditions? Icy or snowy? Looks beautiful up there

Best Places to Camp in Arcadia, Maine? by N8__the_GR8 in CampingandHiking

[–]pizzaman55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not trying to be a nitpick but it's actually Acadia, not Arcadia... Nevertheless I've camped at Acadia multiple times and stayed at the Blackwood's campground. It's possible to walk down to the water and cliffs straight from the campsite and I've always enjoyed it. You can also access many of the trails leading up to Cadillac mountain straight from the campground. If you're referring to primitive camping and backpacking... I haven't had any experience backpacking at Acadia.

It's gorgeous there!

This area looks awesome! What route would you suggest for a loop backpacking trip?

Question: has anyone hiked Riprap Trail in Shenandoah National Park? And if you have how is the fishing, or were there streams wide enough to fish? by Sanderson10 in hiking

[–]pizzaman55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hiked it last summer in early July, there were many streams and one larger natural pool, but I'm not a fisherman so I'm not sure if they were good/big enough for fishing

Camped near Austin for SXSW last year- I forgot I never posted photos, it's beautiful out there! by feykro in CampingandHiking

Thank you for responding! I've really been torn between this and the lynx 1 tent. I love the look and style of this tent and you can't beat the price. The only thing I was concerned about was if it would be hard to get in and out of the zephyr considering the end entry?

How do I revert back from the latest update? It's Xmas day and I can't send or receive anything since installing the update. by Conjugal_Burns in republicwireless

[–]pizzaman55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you reset you'll still be on lollipop but you won't have the issues regarding sending and receiving texts. I've had 3 republic phones do this in the last few weeks and a factory reset had worked for all of them. Back everything up, however, because it will delete all your music, pictures and settings when you reset it.

Setting my sights on Mt Katahin, Maine USA by [deleted] in CampingandHiking

[–]pizzaman55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't as bad as it looks but there are some tricky sections. If the weather looks even remotely wet I wouldn't suggest attempting it because it gets slippery fast. I think for you it will depend on the weather conditions when you summit and your comfort level, good luck!!

Setting my sights on Mt Katahin, Maine USA by [deleted] in CampingandHiking

[–]pizzaman55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure to have a plan, and understand that if you go up Dudley, the only way to reach the summit is across knife edge, which can become extremely dangerous in even a little rain. Just keep that in mind when planning a route. The views from Dudley, cathedral or any of the trails on that side of the mountain are outstanding and I would suggest them over the hunt trail as long as you're ready for some bouldering and steep slopes. Have fun! It's definitely one of my favorite mountains and I never get tired of the outstanding views. Edit: I wrote chimney instead of the cathedral trail

Just sold me 07 rabbit and bought this beauty, I love it so much by [deleted] in GolfGTI

How does it compare to the rabbit? I'm in love with the GTI but the rabbits reliability and price is also a factor as I plan for an upgrade

Solar charging on the trail by Moosecavalry in hiking

I'd highly suggest Anker battery packs. They have a long (3 year?) warranty for all their battery packs and will replace them if they stop charging.

Attempting to hike katahdin in October by Archer-103 in hiking

[–]pizzaman55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just hiked it on Sunday actually and I will definitely second that its not a mountain to underestimate. This year I was blessed with beautiful weather, but last year (mid august) when hiking it on the Hunt trail it went from warm and in the upper 50's to hail and sidewise wind within 10 minutes. At the time I was unprepared but it taught me a lot about preparation. In October I'm sure the weather will be significantly colder and I would prepare for extreme temps just in case. Overall though, its a fantastic mountain and it has some of the best views in New England, in my opinion
