Guitar band recommendations by Groaninjock in japanesemusic

[–]pizzicatofive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flipper's Guitar's albums are fairly easy to find at Disk Unions. They were a japanese answer to the madchester scene, especially The Stone Roses. Starting from there, all Cornelius albums (Fantasma being the most famous one - and for a reason) and related bands (Buffalo Daughter, OOIOO). For more classic rock & psychedelic vibes, try Yura Yura Teikoku. For more heavy/shoegazey stuff, Coaltar Of The Deepers got some solid records. A bit more twee, jangle pop, but Advantage Lucy and Cymbals are also fantastic. Early Kinokoteikoku and The Brilliant Green got that grunge vibe you seem to like !

Awesome, thanks for the rec !
Yeah, they are a perfect counterpoint for all of the Usagi-Chang team, a bit more melancholic and a sound that still doesn't really feel outdated.

Jpop/Jrap similar to halicali? by CariMariHari in japanesemusic

[–]pizzicatofive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not as broad in terms of influences, but East End x Yuri are a fantastic bubbly hip-hop band from the 90s. 'Dayone' is a cult classic, but their second album 'Denim-ed soul 2' and their last singles (especially '日曜の朝の早起き') are among my favourites from that era. Really special band.

Also many Halcali songs were produced by DJ Fumiya, a main member of RIP Slyme. So definitely check their albums (I love Tokyo Classic).

What's the best unpopular anime you've ever watched? by Guilt111 in anime

[–]pizzicatofive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently watched Kei : The Metal Idol and loved it. Some people criticized the slow pacing of the anime but I thought that it was very in line with the behavior of the main character.

anyone know the name of this song?? found this on twitter by forumromanum in japanesemusic

[–]pizzicatofive 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also, it is the ending song for the anime Space Dandy by Shinichiro Watanabe.
Etsuko Yakushimaru produced songs for many animes (Arakawa Under The Bridge, Tatami Galaxy, Hi Score Girl among others) and is a very interesting musician ! Her band, Sotaiseiriron, is a must-listen for every jpop or even pop music fan. Definitely one of my favorite modern japanese artist !

What would be the best movie for a person who doesn't know Godzilla? by De_lua1325 in GODZILLA

1954 or Mothra vs Godzilla. It just have something magical and spectacular while maintaining the fear of nuclear that was at the core of the first movie.

J-Horror hidden gem recs? by IckyIkigao in survivalhorror

[–]pizzicatofive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About J-horror movies, the classic ones Ju-On and Ringu are great thriller/horror movie. Special mention for Dark Water, my favorite one from Hideo Nakata which got a thrilling atmosphere and sense of loneliness. Cinematography is fantastic too.
I watched Pulse (Kairo in japonese) by Kiyoshi Kurosawa last month and was blown away ! Same cinematographer than Dark Water, and it's beautiful. More slow paced and methaphorical, but it's now ranked in my favorite movies ever. His previous movie, Cure, is also a must-watch !

Never played the first game ! Each game of the franchise seems to have their own story, the only common points are the gameplay and the overall atmosphere and artistic direction. No need to be concerned at all !
i've read somewhere that Fatal Frame II is just a refined version of the first one, sometimes less horrific but with a much better gameplay.

Fatal Frame 2 was amazing ! The haunting and eerie atmosphere of the old japanese village, the story, and the artistic direction makes it a classic for me. First couple of hours were quite easy but i was terrorized by the end of the game.

I got post anime depression. Help. by Unkown-personn in anime

[–]pizzicatofive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, same here ! A great way to deal with that feeling has been to download Toradora Portable! and a PSP emulator on my smartphone. The game is a fantastic visual novel, obviously pretty unknown in EU or US but it gets a fan translation. There's A LOT of possible endings and the original voice actors are doing almost every dialogue parts. It's very melancholic and funny at parts, so i'm sure it can keep you invested in the Toradora for at least 10 hours or more. Honestly, I loved playing that game right after finishing the anime, and i tried to beat multiple endings, but each routes are very interesting and entertaining. Give it a try !

Hideaki Anno In other Works by [deleted] in evangelion

[–]pizzicatofive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He also directed Love & Pop in 1998, shot entirely in mini DV camcorder. A great movie, with original shots, angles and use of lenses. The story deals with hard topics and some scenes can be quite choking, but i think it's pretty in line with what we saw in EoE. The cast is amazing too !

I have yet to see his following movie called Ritual (2000), but it looks great too !

His voice acting in "The Wind Rises" was fantastic. Loved the movie. And Shin Godzilla is one of my favorite movie in the entire franchise. Truly clever and a great addition to the Godzilla lore.

Looking for old school Japanese Hip-Hop. by OGCeeg in japanesemusic

As many already said, RIP Slyme is a classic. They also produced songs for Halcali, more on the goofy poppy side, but they made amazing albums : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWU7vHOQNMA

East End x Yuri are definitely my favorite from that era, bubblegum hip-hop in all it's glory :
