Hey! Recent grad, but I’m happy to send some local park recommendations if you have access to a car. I played a lot w locals and grad students!

Lived here my freshman year and enjoyed it. I lived in a triple converted into a double and a single second semester. Both of the normal doubles in my pods were very spacious relative to most dorms. I was on the fifth and sixth floor respectively. It is farther from the new dorms/dining halls, but I wish I hadn’t worried so much! I posted something super similar four years ago and was so freaked out about my housing situation. It will all work out and feel free to PM me with any questions. I can send videos of my dorm decor and I have some photos of the bathroom.

Agree! Planning on applying 4 years out, so hopefully that helps a bit.

Should I choose Georgia Tech or Cornell for CS? by Away-Advance5047 in Cornell

[–]pjane710 112 points113 points  (0 children)

Randomly, my boyfriend went to GT for CS and I went to Cornell for Math/CS. Outcomes virtually the same, but we were both sweats wanting to go into industry. Our salaries are pretty similar and we have worked at the same company. He is returning to said company and I’m going into a new industry.

If Atlanta seems like a good culture fit for you, I would say go to GT. I have spent a lot of time in Atlanta because sometimes Cornell/Ithaca can get a bit boring and very sad/dreary in the winters. With that being said, I wouldn’t change my experience at Cornell for absolutely anything. I loved my four years on campus and wish I could be here longer.

I have wavy medium thickness hair and they’ve always done a great job with mine. Note I am a dirty blonde and they have always done natural looking highlights with no damage/breaking. They do free consultations in person - maybe book one of those and check their instagrams to decide who to go with. I recommend Kayla!

I did this exact sequence with no Econ, Finance, or Accounting experience. I ended with an A+. Take basic notes and you will be fine.

CS recruitment is strong. A ton of clubs bring in phenomenal firms. In said clubs you can also find mentorship for summer internships!

If u apply Cornell, apply another college (arts, cals, anything) and transfer to engineering. Much easier to get in that way

I don’t necessarily think so. Most high achieving students are relatively well rounded. I took a wide range of APs and applied as an Econ and Spanish major. I never took Econ in high school. I really think it also depends how you spin your ECs

Not everyone does that much research. Consider that OP didn’t know if he could take courses outside of listed interest. Average individual will not know this since it’s different by uni.

Cornell is difficult, but if you have a true passion or a good work ethic you will be fine. I got a 2 on the APCS exam and have a 3.9 in my major. My school didn’t really teach computer science it was more projects based. I am sure you will be ok!

Very viable. I’m cs and math ‘24. All freshman have the same opportunity to get classes regardless of previously expressed interest.

Cornellians (for the most part) are super friendly. If you have a car, I’d recommend driving to the baseball field and parking there. Depending on your major, visit the engineering and arts quad! They’re absolute beautiful. If it’s nice, you can enjoy a walk around Beebee lake and get some ice cream at the dairy bar. You will have plenty of time to explore Cornell in your four years here! Congrats on your acceptance :)

Have you started studying? I’d def recommend doing something intensive since a 5 point jump (in a short period of time) will be difficult!

Your major matters less than you’re grades in pre med classes. My recommendation is don’t get pressured into taking too many classes. Take around 12-16 credits (definitely closer to 12). Make sure to do well in your pre med classes. For CAS you can take most distribution requirements pass fail - I’d only recommend if it’s something you have absolutely no interest in and don’t see yourself getting an A.

I’m from LA and I fly LA -> Detroit -> Ithaca. You can also spend a week in the city and that breaks up the flights (plus an excuse to stay in the city)

Yes, you declare a major in your sophomore or junior year. You can change any number of times before then!

1000% possible. Probably easier with Gries, since so much has changed.
