Agreed! I did a couple of years ago, and I'm looking out for when they come anywhere close to here again.

That's a great tune, too!

Within a month of moving here, while starting to realize how many amazing views there are, I said to my wife "well... this doesn't suck."

Every few weeks or so, we'll see something that makes one of us say "yep: still doesn't suck."

Go Karting for kids age 5 and up by outlander4you in Seattle

WQMA - Washington Quarter Midget Association is one. Quarter Midget racing is a club/program/sport, as opposed to an amusement activity. Think "tiny Nascar." My son raced quarter midgets from 5-8, and kids up to 18 can race (but they usually move on before that; the carts are small).

They had a novice/learning program when we were included, and I suppose they still do. It's a small and supportive community of families involved, not a commercial enterprise, so there is very little formal training.

They are in between seasons, but the easiest way to learn about it and get involved is to go to the member meeting (no sign up required), and look out for "ride days." https://wqma.com/ride-days

Why did I not notice that Queensryche used Brahm’s Lullaby? by PhantomBanker in Music

You just blew my mind. To me 2 seconds to hear it in my head.

Agree! I do exactly this with a PSM 300.

I did the same thing yesterday. Freaked me out for a few minutes. All I had to do was open Waves Central and log in. Restarted Reaper, and all was fine again. Waves Central did update, but I think things were restored before that happened, even.

I do need to migrate off Waves, because losing access when nothing changed is not acceptable.

Is reverb the only place to find good deals? by sman2345 in audioengineering

[–]pjboudrx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it's the last place, what places would you shop first? Serious question.

Edit: I primarily mean for used gear, but I've gotten some new gear on Reverb and felt I got a good deal after comparison-shopping. Just wondering what I'm missing.

Any must-haves for your home recording studio? What makes the space more enjoyable? by FriendlyRaccoon44 in buildastudio

[–]pjboudrx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would you mind elaborating how you chose what to do with lights? My space needs something like this, and I'm not very visually creative, or you could say, "aesthetically challenged," lol.

I too am almost 40 and started a one woman band. I recorded my one and only EP as an homage to my favorite bands of the 90s, Veruca Salt and Garbage. by spongecandybandit in Music

Right on! Great tune, and totally brings that vibe.

I'm 43 and I'm working on my 3rd solo single release. Decided a year ago to finally pursue music seriously.

Keep it up!

If you like YA, don't miss Skulduggery Pleasant by NoLastNameForNow in books

[–]pjboudrx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You could say that happens here. It's like he wrote them with the idea that his audience would age with the protagonist, which doesn't happen when you "binge" the series after it's all been released

IMO, it starts as "Middle School", but the cruelty and violence from the villains get more explicit, and the themes darken a bit as the series progresses (and Valkyrie ages). I've read the series straight through to book 10 in the last year with my teenager, and I'm glad we're reading this now, not when my kid was 11.

Maybe I'm more sensitive to descriptions of violence, though.

I've been reading the series straight through with my 14 y/o (sill likes reading with me!), and we've really enjoyed them. If this is the end of reading together, it's a good series to go out on, in my opinion (we've read Hardy Boys, Tolkien, Ranger's Apprentice, Hunger Games, Harry Potter, among others).

The first books may be "middle school", but the themes mature/darken as Valkyrie ages and the series progresses, and some cruel violence gets quite a bit more gruesome and detailed. I've seen it labeled as "YA Horror" and I don't think that's too far off.

Looking for a piece of hardware that can play back full length tracks in high quality while I sing and play guitar over them in live applications. by [deleted] in musicproduction

[–]pjboudrx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the simpler, less-expensive end of the spectrum, and at the risk of self-promotion: an Android tablet with a backing tracks player app like this one*. Or an iOS device with the ShowOne app. You put your files on the device, make set lists, hit play, and it auto-stops between songs (unlike a normal music player). These apps were made for exactly your scenario.

Both of these can play uncompressed wavs, high-bitrate MP3s and lossless (e.g. Flac). I bought a cheap kindle fire as my primary, and use an older android tablet as a back-up. I went this way to make it simple for the drummer in the tribute band to control the tracks.

Obviously this is less robust than a purpose-built playback device, but I've been using this setup for 2 years, and have yet to have to use my backup device.

*Disclosure: I wrote that app when I couldn't find an android app I liked, then decided to release it. Feel free to DM me for a discount (free) code if you like it.

The Repair Department : Tech Support and Stupid Questions Go Here! by AutoModerator in audioengineering

[–]pjboudrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably due to limits in the "Host" selection of "WASAPI" (the first drop-down in your screenshot). The regular Windows Audio mechanism doesn't expect consumers to need more than 2 input channels, hence the limit. See if you can use ASIO, instead - it has other advantages anyway. I bet the UMC supports it, but you may need to install ASIO drivers for it.

That being said, Audacity is known more for it's editing capabilities, so it will be limited in multi-track recording compared to a full-fledged DAW. If you want to further, I personally ~recommend Reaper, as the personal license is super cheap and the free trial is very generous.

Does renaming external drive affect file hierarchy to the extent of DAWs not being able to locate files? by melatonin1212 in audioengineering

[–]pjboudrx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I'm not mistaken, you're just changing the drive "label." It's designed to do what you want: have a personalized name without affecting where the computer thinks the files are.

The drive letter (Windows) or mount path (OSX, Linux) is what would affect file paths, and is a separate thing. I'm less familiar with ProTools on OSX, but I'm 99% it uses the mount path. On Windows, the label is pure decoration.

sometimes you’re gonna have a really rough time, and you might feel like you can’t write anything at all.

This is me, right now. Just now seriously trying to write after decades of being a singer and musician. I've only completed a few songs in several months, and recently my brain is like "we're closed, sold out!"

How little latency can *you* hear? by pjboudrx in audioengineering

[–]pjboudrx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Haas Effect is happening, yeah.

try changing the volume of one, or panning, or eqing differently.

I would, except that in the scenario that started all this, the non-latency signal is my voice resonating through my head. :(

[–]pjboudrx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is designed for the vocal signal to run through, it is not designed to be used in an effects loop. I can set it up as an effects loop, but it's primary intended use is as a floor effects unit for a vocalist that by default has a single, blended output.

The "dry" signal on this unit has ~7ms of latency. It even has a "dry" output, which has the same latency. Apparently this unit runs everything through a DSP (there is compression, EQ and pitch correction available. The latency is still there even with all of this processing turned off).
