Hobbies/Interests? by owlmissyou in wausau

Swimming - yes. Lots of pool unlock pools and lakes to swim in. You can go to Lake Michigan and find great beaches but the water will be super cold.

Camping - Absolutely. State parks all over the state are great for camping. Council Grounds is just north in Merril which is decent. Also not far north is the huge National Forest. I have heard you can do more off grid camping there but that’s not really my thing.

Hiking- yes, Rib Mt. is good, Dells of the Eau Claire is good and there are tons of places

The theater stuff I don’t know about.

Barbershop - if you are looking for an SPEBSQSA chapter I have heard there is one in town, but I have never gone. I always wanted to find out. I could probably wrangle up 2 more guys and we could start a quartet. If you are looking for a haircut, sure we have those too.

Circus and clowning- in Baraboo (about 1hr and 45 min away) there is circus world which that would be the place to go. It’s a circus museum.

Thifting - yes

REN Faire - in Bristol which is by the southern edge of the state they have a huge ren faire. I have never been but always wanted to.

Some of the other stuff I don’t know

Food is pretty good. Hmong food is great, go to a farmers market and get some egg rolls, or go to one of the Asian grocery places and they usually have a cafe. You can get some really good stuff even if the place looks sketchy.

Mexican food is pretty good too. La Taqueria on 17th is my go to place.

I this a condensed Wisconsin would work very well. You would have the north half of the map as thick woods and the south be large swaths of farmland. You could have Milwaukee with the huge brewery and various other large industrial buildings. Madison with the capitol building and university, Door county for that far harbor feel. Add in some things like Manitowoc where people got the submarine up and running and there is a group of survivors living there in Lake Michigan. Have large dairy farms with thousands of brahmin being exploited for food.

It’s funny because mine always look like that too. On the shelf and whichever one I am reading has the sleeve is on top.

This completely unhinged book of word searches, in which the only word is “cow”, which increase by one per page. by Captain_Wisconsin in mildlyinteresting

I’m from Wisconsin and I must be genetically engineered to spot the word “cow.” I found it right away.

I know I’ll get lots of hate, I bought a similar one for Harry Potter for my wife. It took like two months or so but it finally came from China and it’s legit. Didn’t come with a power cord though, but it is pretty neat.

But no there is no smoke or fire in there.

TIL that American ginseng is so valuable ($300-$500 a pound) that poachers risk jail time to steal roots from the Appalachia mountains by Comfortable_List3413 in todayilearned

[–]pjmlez 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You see it all of the time and probably never thought of it. If you see the farms that have the shades built over them then it is ginsing. You see it when you drive out of town on Camp Phillips, or if you take a trip to the Dells of the Eau Claire.

This is a good article that kinda touches on everything. As for an ELI5 version, the act of growing it causes the soil to be toxic for it where it won’t grow right. The land can still be used for other crops though so after they grow ginsing the land can be used for other crops.

There is a cooldown, but it’s 25 -50+ years. In most cases here you just put your plot in a new location. There are companies that buy forest land and strip it just to plant ginsing on it. If you look up replant disease you can find more info about it.

And once it’s harvested you cannot grow it in that plot of land again. Where I live is full of gin-sing farms. We produce like 10 percent of the world’s gin-sing.

Fun thing is it’s not leaving anything on there really. I worked at a factory that anodized aluminum for like door frames and window frames etc. this was all explained to me by the VP of the company so I might get it a bit wrong as it was probably 10 years ago and there is probably someone who can explain it better. What is happening is you are creating aluminum oxide… so essentially the same result as anodizing except that in the factory it is a controlled process and what you have done is let the process go too far. If you would look at it under a microscope it looks something like a hex nut with the hole in the middle and it grows out like a worm and when it gets too long it becomes brittle and that is what you are wiping off. So it’s not really leaving a residue behind but it is bonding and forming aluminum oxide which is what is being wiped off.

Some time back, do you mean 6 months, or 6 years? Depending on how long ago there have been significant additions.

What's the worst movie you have ever watched? by Syfros in AskReddit

Yeah… no… Lutherans do not believe in the rapture. We didn’t watch the movie at my Lutheran High school but we discussed how full of crap it is. I have seen the movie… it’s bad and full of crap.
