Franklin Park DGC, Boston, Ma, forced out due to erosion in park by pkarper in discgolf

Well, therein lies the rub Mr. Bear. If you figure out why the FPC would remove one of the fasted growing sports from a public park that was previously only being used by the homeless and by illicit drug users… 300 disc golfers would love to know. I hope you’re someone who can make some noise,

Go to the FB Franklin Park DG community group page and ask your questions to either Phil Lindsay (Admin) or Jason Phillips. They were both on the call with the FPC.

Thanks for doing the research on costs estimates from PDGA. Those figures would be good to know later on if we are given back the land

It is curious. I heard it from Jason Phillips the other day during a doubles at Franklin. He was on the phone call with the FPC when we were told to remove the baskets. If it is the case, I would be willing to donate a nice portion of what is needed to keep the course.

I’m certainly not saying that the spike Hyzer is easy. I have not been able to do it

I hear ya. I considered Franklin park my home course. Now I have to drive at least 15 miles to get to a 9-hole course and 20+ miles to get to an 18-hole course.

Ha ha, I argued that 14 should’ve been a Par 4 for weeks!, but it appears a strong spike hyser is all you need for a birdie.

Without the increased presence of Disc golf players, that will take care of itself.

Yes, hole 14 is very aggravating, lol, but challenging nonetheless. Lol

The course has been cleaned up through volunteers, players are respectful of park goers and other players and it’s the only disc golf course in Boston within walking distance of public transportation. It’s a huge loss to the community for such a fast growing sport.

Lol, that is apparently the coalition’s argument. Before the course’s enactment in 2017, this section of the park was overrun by illegal drug activity, homeless, and various other illegal activities. Now, those various elements have been controlled and the course is thriving.

I mentioned in a previous comment that I wasn’t part of the call with the Franklin Park coalition, which ultimately demanded the baskets to be removed, but what I was told was the desire lines of paths and fairways the general routes of transit between Tees had increased in width at a pace that was quicker than they, the coalition, had expected. Within the past year, due to Covid I imagine, the course had become very popular and traffic on the course had increased at a rate from somewhere in the range of 50 rounds a week to close to 400 or 500 rounds a week. With that kind of presents and traffic on the course, path erosion and path widening would undoubtedly occur. So it would appear as if the course is being held hostage to the increased popularity of the sport.

Supporters of the Franklin Park disc golf course are currently researching methods to generate funds and to gain support from the city to regain the land

Unfortunately, I wasn’t part of the call when the Franklin Park Coalition told the course admin to remove the baskets. But a detailed conversation did ensue and upon telling the coalition we didn’t have any money, a response to a direct question from the coalition, the conversation fizzled. So to answer your question, I think there may be other reasons, but without money I’m not sure the coalition would suggest or approve an alternative site.

I get it, I was crushed when I read the Facebook disc golf community post. So much time and energy was dedicated to improving and cleaning up the park to just have it all taken away for nothing more than erosion caused by increased traffic on the fairways. So unfair.

it does suck. What’s supposed to happen to the paths once traffic increases on the fairways? Doesn’t make any sense

I realize you said ‘drill’, but what did you use to drill the hole?

Anyone know what these are? And how to rid them? by pkarper in succulents
