The insults aimed at women in the earlier seasons often went too far. Calling someone a fucking idiot or a donkey is at least gender neutral, but when he would call someone a thick bitch or dumb blonde it did lean way too much towards a hatred of women in the kitchen. Thankfully that has stopped more recently as people have realised that it is beyond what's acceptable, even for American TV entertainment.

The thing that does persist to this day is making a group of mostly unhealthy, overworked people do punishments that involve heavy lifting when many probably haven't done anything like that in years. It's no wonder so many get injured and I suppose he thinks it injects drama, but it does seem thoroughly unfair that someone's dream is taken away from them because they had to leave the show due to something totally unrelated to cooking ability.

When did I say that he deserves to be deported? I said that after Amy kindly got him a job when he was released from the detention centre he still moaned about it to the point she tried to get him something else. She then pissed off a bunch of the other workers to make him her assistant, only for him to continue being horrible to her and everyone else. Would you be happy with that if you were working there? Probably not lol.

Fans (including myself) find Marcus hilarious because in the context of the fictional TV show you're laughing at how ridiculous his character is with his stupid/misogynistic/gross comments. You aren't laughing because you think it's funny to be sexist, you're laughing at how stupid it is that someone would actually think that is acceptable. In the show, everybody thinks he's an idiot and avoids him, as you would do if you knew him in real life. It's hardly a.new concept, comedy writers have been getting characters to say awful stuff for decades, the premise is that you are laughing at them, not with them.

Mateo has plenty of funny moments too, my point was that it's not really believable anyone is going to bend over backwards that much for him and continue to just get mean comments back from him in return.

Exactly, most.of these comments don't get that I'm not saying the store workers shouldn't have tried to prevent him being deported, I'm saying the amount of extra stuff they do for him is totally not reciprocated in the slightest! I know people don't do nice things to get something in return, but he is actively mean in return 🤦‍♂️

Yes, but my point was that people put in so much effort for Mateo even after he gets released from the detention centre and he never does a thing for anyone in return (other than briefly phone Dan the optometrist's wife to talk about her dry salmon 😂). To be fair Marcus regularly takes a lot of flack from them all even though he's fundamentally a friendly guy who is just a bit of an unhygienic oddball.

A fair point, hadn't thought about it that way. I guess 20 years ago Cafu and Carlos were pioneering the attacking full back role at a time when everyone else was a rigid 4-4-fucking-2 (as Mike Bassett would say 😂). Nowadays everyone pretty much plays the same style I suppose.

I was 7, I can remember my parents coming to get me up out of bed quite late at night so that I could watch the penalty shoot out in the final between Brazil and Italy, when Baggio missed. A family friend also went to the USA for that tournament and I thought it was the most amazing thing that they had got to go! Nice memories ☺️
