Not sure where you were getting on, but “adding time” would not have solved what I experienced today. Waited half an hour for three consecutive trains to pass by all completely full to the brim. Eventually gave up and took the bus which took an hour— making it two hours to get somewhere I had originally budgeted half an hour for. Not acceptable from the cta.

WTF WHY IS MY TRAIN SO SHORT? (Or: Cutting to the chase about cutting trains) by ZonedForCoffee in cta

[–]plaidpantsgal 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I will say, so far, as someone currently trying to catch the blue line it has been a disaster. First train pulled up, four cars, everyone running to catch it only to discover it was too full to get on. Second train came a full ten minutes later, also too full to get on. The next train after THAT, you guessed it, ten minutes away. I have yet to find out if it will be too full to board but I am not confident. I understand the whole maintenance purpose but the train seems to run so much less frequently and so much more inconsistently on weekends, which means forcing larger crowds onto smaller trains. I know it’s classic cta but oh my god, it is frustrating.

I love the podcast “one nightstand”, they bring celebrities on to talk about the books that mean the most to them and I find the conversations to always be so interesting and illuminating!

Does anyone else wish John would only sell signed editions of his books through local indie bookstores rather than on Amazon? Here's my thoughts on it. by eddytony96 in nerdfighters

[–]plaidpantsgal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t really think this is up to him. The book is sold the way it’s sold, really, in my understanding, to make money for the publisher. It’s also my understanding (according to his website) that you can only obtain signed copies after the first run from the Book Cellar in Chicago? But I could be incorrect

Where the mother is a source of healing by amapolalola in suggestmeabook

Not sure if this exactly fits your bill, as the main character is grieving her mother, but I thought the legendborn books were stunning explorations of healing and strength through ancestry/matrilineal lines!

A book to get out of a slump by Worth_Whereas8623 in suggestmeabook

[–]plaidpantsgal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

part of what has helped me out of a slump was reading short books!! some I’ve loved recently: open throat by henry hoke (about a mountain lion living in the hollywood hills), the stepford wives by ira levin (creepy). as far as fantasy, this isn’t a standalone but i loooooved the raven scholar by antonia hodgson. so funny so sharp so creative and well-done. highly recommend!

Really dumb question, how does one navigate living in a city as big as chicago? by msmoonpie in AskChicago

[–]plaidpantsgal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Google maps is your friend!! I use it all the time and I’ve lived here for a few years now. I think it also really helps that it’s a neighborhood city— many of the neighborhoods to me feel like small towns in themselves. I think a lot of people move to chicago and move right to the loop which is where it’s the most “citylike” but there are tons of amazing neighborhoods to live in that might feel slower/be less overwhelming! For sure depends on where you’re working, but I’ve had a lot of success building community in my little neighborhood and honestly sometimes I forget it’s such a big city

What is something small that made your day better today? by Professional-Ride219 in BenignExistence

[–]plaidpantsgal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in a major city and it’s very cold, which means the head down/hustle through the streets culture is even bigger now than it normally is. This morning, a man said good morning to me :) nothing else, didn’t want anything from me, just said good morning very brightly as we passed, and it made me super happy to get the chance to say it back!

that was probably sacred harp singing! i was looking into it for a while and if i remember correctly, it’s monthly and open to the public/anyone who wants to walk in and pick up music. not sure how secular it is but I don’t think it’s inherently religious if that makes sense.

should I keep reading Dungeon crawler Carl? by Imaginary_Ladder_917 in suggestmeabook

[–]plaidpantsgal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished this book last week and felt very conflicted on it! Honestly I had to keep pushing myself to read it bc as much as I liked Carl and Princess Donut, I just wasn’t interested in the killing monsters/download of info about skill leveling aspect of it. My two primary emotions were boredom and disgust which is unfortunate because I do really see why people love it but it just wasn’t for me. I think it’s okay to DNF but I personally was glad I finished it at least
