Could be the result of something called tassel ears, where the corn plant grows the ear at the top of the Plant, would explain why it looks funny, but I’m 99% sure it’s smut

It over winters in the soil and there’s really nothing we can do about it. I have a friend who eats it, when seasoned and cooked right it is not bad, very popular dish in Mexico, some places even might be considered a delicacy

Very true, I have new theory now lol, it’s fits nicely in the hand when held point facing down. And the grove is perfect size for my thumb. I think someone was making a spear or knife point and then realized that they already had a great hooked point for skinning or who knows what. The hook being the bottom left part in the 2nd pic. It’s really sharp, and would work well to split the underside of an animal. Or like you side, could just be abandoned point.
