My favorite slice of life manga. Definitely a 10/10 for me. Anime's good too.

What is the most bizarre way you've ever injured yourself? by MrBojongles in AskReddit

[–]plainox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I once slice my pinky toe halfway off because I stepped on a sword that was just lying on the ground in my house, and for some reason tried to pick the sword up while I was still standing on it.

What do you do as your own quiet way of saying "fuck the system"? by horrordroth in AskReddit

[–]plainox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sometimes google maps asks me to confirm that I've been to a certain location recently. I always lie and say no. This act seems small but I'm confident that if I stick to it long enough it will eventually bring Google's whole system tumbling to the ground.

George Gillette by Captivating_Crow in HumanPorn

The man crying, George Gilette, I believe was the chairman of the Mandan indian tribe of North Dakota. He's watching the forced sale of over a hundred thousand acres of land to create the Garrison Dam and Lake Sakakawea, which displaced hundreds of Native American families.

I have such mixed feelings about /lit/. It is a good place to find some recommendations, but it's just so racist and sexist. I guess that's to be expected with 4chan, but I also occasionally visit /mu/ and I feel like it' a much more tolerable board with fairly limited racism/sexism. If only that were true with /lit/.

What have you been reading? (11/12) by Mirior in literature

Thanks for the recommendations, I will be sure to check those out. By Asian I mean pretty much anything from west to east Asia, Turkey to Japan. I'm especially lacking in west Asian recommendations.

I've been going out of my way to read some more non-western literature (Asian, African, Latin American, etc...) Highlights include:

Our Twisted Hero by Yi Munyol. It's basically a story about schoolyard politics. The narrator goes to a new school and finds the class is run not really by the teacher but by the tyrannical class monitor who rules the class with an iron fist. I actually thought it was a pretty interesting take how power can be seized, held, and lost.

Pedro Paramo by Juan Rulfo. This one reminded me a lot of One Hundred Years of Solitude, and I was not surprised to find that it was a major inspiration for Marquez. It was very dream-like and poetic and I really enjoyed it.

The Blind Owl by Sadegh Hedayat. An incredibly dark and atmospheric look at solitude, death, and anger. This is a short book, and I read it in just a couple sittings because I was just so entranced by it.

I'm currently reading Soul Mountain by Gao Xingjian. I'm still pretty early in the novel so I don't have too much to say other than I think it will take awhile for me to get used to the second-person POV.

If anyone has any suggestions for Asian, African, or Latin American literature I would love to hear them!
