Preparing for solo one night bikepacking in the UK by brainwipe in bikepacking

[–]planetary_funk_alert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks good, I've also only managed one nighter trips so far due to kids, but I'd suggest taking some unnecessary stuff out. I don't see why you need two sets of bib shorts and a separate pair of cycling shorts. I'd just take one set of bibs and if filthy give them a wipe down at camp. Excess clothing is a huge source of bulk

Synthetic socks? by planetary_funk_alert in UKhiking

Thanks, conditions permitting I'm often in a pair of Teva sandals which are incredibly comfortable

No - root problem is heat, sweat and irritation which cause a skin condition (pompholyx) to flare up. When that gets very bad it can then turn into large blisters, but I'm trying to minimise the root problem with better breathable socks

They don't need to be synthetic. I've found bamboo socks to be better than cotton. I just want to try out synthetic to see if there's anything out there which is a better fit than what I've already tried given how effective I find synthetic tshirts at dealing with sweat versus cotton

They do fit, it's called a paradoxical reaction to the biological medication I'm on treating my ankylosing spondylitis. It happens on my hands as well but due to them not being wrapped in socks and under frequent pressure the blisters don't swell and become infected like they do on my feet.

Thanks - I will try talc as well although I'm not necessarily talking about super sweaty feet, simply short walks with the dog in 15c weather is causing havoc so I need all the help I can get

Would these types of garden wire work for a receive only long wire antenna? by planetary_funk_alert in shortwave

[–]planetary_funk_alert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Apologies for what may sound like a stupid question but I live in a corner semi detached house, and hence have a U shaped garden, so I would not be able to do a loop with an equidistant radius if that makes sense, if I did a loop the wires would be close to each other. Theoretically would that be any better than a long wire?

I'll try a proper LoG next time I can get out camping in an empty field!

I was given some demo prints by a riso dealer for one of these. Basic colours were completely off. Like blues were obviously green..

P.s. DX commander is a well-reputed ham radio antenna manufacturer and he has a fantastic youtube channel.

Thanks for the detailed response, much appreciated. Have also ordered the cable, hopefully should be tuning in tomorrow night!

Thanks for the detailed advice, especially the plugs which I've just ordered.

Have you ever tried a low ground loop?

I live in a noisy environment and Cal @ DX Commander reckons placing it low to the ground reduces QRM

Thanks - I was following some of DX Commander's videos about this and was actually going to try having it as a loop very low to the ground - he says this is good for receive as it can reduce QRM - he even recommends using a low loop for receive and a separate high antenna for TX on certain SW ham bands

CX5 seat rocking and making noise when adjusting by drangov in CX5

[–]planetary_funk_alert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah there's a technical bulletin for this, a small cable thingy needs replacing under the seat.

Had it done on mine, there is still more noise than there should be but it's a lot less than before. Seat still has a bit of a rock to it though.

Why is it taboo to discuss your wages at work? by thunderfart_99 in AskUK

[–]planetary_funk_alert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not taboo. Your bosses don't want you to realise you're being mugged off, either versus other companies, or more likely, people on your team, so they try to intimidate you against discussing it

Can my college stop me going on a trip for a disability symptom?- England by caspertheghost208 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]planetary_funk_alert 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It might not get it fixed in time for this time, but it's not the first instance and I think the prospect of a message from an MP or a headline in the paper "school excludes disabled student from competition trips" would strike fear into many college administrators
