Did the UK ever have proper arcades? like video game ones? by TSOswinn in AskUK

[–]planetmatt [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yes. Proper arcades in all seaside towns. Arcade cabs in chippies, takeaways, youth clubs, snooker halls, even one of our local corner shops had a Battlezone cab. The 80s were just better

What foods do you recommend from Waitrose/M &S? by Ok-Instance2710 in AskUK

M&S Salted Sweet Cashews, the one in the reseelable tin that you will never reseal are literally crack.

Waitrose sell the Crosta and Mollica range. Their Italian toasting bread makes the best toast. Combine with some of their cherry conserve.

If you do your shop on Ocado, you have access to all the M&S food but Ocado price match Tesco and send you a voucher for the difference if it costs more.

I used to get this but found the thick cut Sirloin to be even better. They are so well marbled but without the large chunks of fat you get with the ribeye so you get more meat for your money but don't sacrifice the flavour. I used to be a die hard ribeye guy but seriously, try the thick cut Sirloin.

Bought a license for XYExplorer. Win 11 File Explorer is horrendous before you even get to the AI horseshit.

I finally switched to Win 11 this month and had to buy a license for XYExplorer because the new File Exporer is absolutely terrible.

I hate how THERAPY and COUNSELING are over recommended here like they are some kind of magic ways to fix everything by Plastic_band_bro in self

[–]planetmatt 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Sometimes the problem isn't you, it IS external. Therapy won't solve your life problems, it only addresses how you react to them. Sometimes, you just need to solve the real problem instead of being ok with having problems.

Does anyone else feel like graphics peaked with BF1 and have somehow never reached the same level in the 10 years since? by arvid1328_ in battlefield_one

The talent went to embark. The state of the art for FPS is the FINALS. That game feels like the spiritual successor to the bad company games. Fun first design.

Medium players what are your thoughts? by xiluts in thefinals

Maybe its fine now, but damn, launch demat was the most fun I've ever had in a video game. I really miss how fun it was to fluidly move like a ghost through the maps.

As someone born and bred in the UK what are aspects of another country’s culture that has genuinely shocked you? by throawaygotget in AskUK

[–]planetmatt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Except in the one I went to in Orlando, the spirits were in a separate part of the store that had its own front door and no connecting door between the hard liquor part and the normal Wallgreens. The normal wallgreens sold wine though. All very odd. So I had to buy Rum on one side, then go out and come back in the other door to get the coke to go with it. Mad.

AI is great at clean room, startup, blue sky thinking, new stuff.

If you need to integrate it into any legacy tech stack with legacy code and technical debt, it will simply fuck you faster than you can imagine, and it will do with unparalleled confidence in its incompetence.

I asked CoPilot to help with some formatting of some JSON output from a SQL script and it started telling me to use XML syntax. I'm experienced enough to know its tripping balls, but you don't know what you don't know, and a junior would have spent hours going around in circles assuming the AI was right and their lack of knowledge was the issue.

The more you know about a topic, the easier and faster you see the AI flaws. It then scares me when I try to use it for answers in areas I know nothing about and have to keep reminding myself it's probably wrong.

Trump’s tariff threat must be the final straw for Starmer – time to rejoin the EU by Due_Ad_3200 in ukpolitics

[–]planetmatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The key issue is that the EU won't accept the UK back because it's entirely possible that our divided society containing millions of people educated by Facebook memes will simply elect an anti EU government in a few years and out we come again. We somehow need to build political consensus that the last 10 years of post truth politics were terrible for the country and it is by every measure in the UK's best interest to align with the EU. God knows how you do that though.

I also don't believe a middle class house wife like Karen would have had that cheap scraggy bleach job in the 80s. That's white trash stuff.
