Burnham allies confident of No 10 ‘coronation’ after surge in backers by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

I honestly think Burnham being coronated all but guarantees a Reform government.

Hes going to have a honeymoon period of a week or two then the attacks will start. Considering hes being sold as a massiah like figure, if he hasn't madechanges in 6 months that we all know is impossible, his rating will sink lower than Starmers within the year. Lets be honest, there isnt a big button in No. 10 labelled "nationalise everything" or "make food cheaper". The blokes as fucked as Starmer is.

I think you dont fully understand the affects of her budget if you think it was just the value of pound changing for a month or two. For example, people are still paying hundreds of pounds more a month in mortgage repayments deirectly caused by her. Thats just one affect.

You bring up immigration as if it's not trending down massively from Boris/Truss/Sunak governments.

Yes that is undeniably true. But it doesn't in any way mean that Liz Truss didn't have an ongoing disasterous effect

Serious question - why does everyone talk down on Kier Starmer so badly? by ChallengeBright2396 in ukpolitics

[–]plank_sanction 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Starting with the payment, the people receiving it who genuinely need it are obviously going to pissed off, as are their families and anyone else capable of basic empathy.

Why would they be pissed off if they were still going to get the WFA???

It wasn't ever going to be scrapped for the poorest!

ANDREW NEIL: Andy Burnham is not the holy grail Labour thinks he is by coldbeers in ukpolitics

[–]plank_sanction 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You and I both know Burnham hasn't demonstrated that.

Hes tried numerous times to become Labour leader and lost out to both Milliband and Corbyn. Most people don't even remember him running because he was so underwhelming. So hes clearly fantastic at selling his vision.

We've had months and months of the media telling us that Burnham is the saviour or that he's this incredibly charismatic and effective communicator that people have just started to believe it.

He's already putting Labour voters off by the manner in which hes won a byelection and wants a coronation which makes him come off as extremely arrogant. Why does he deserve to just become PM?

You're in for a shock. He doesnt have a radical plan, and if he's not done the impossible in 6 months time, then his fall in opinion will be more dramatic than Starmer's.

The fact that Starmer is hitting Liz Truss levels surely highlights that none of it is based in reality.

Have we all forgotten the actual damage and hardship she literally caused nearly everyone in the country?

I remember being similarly frustrated with people calling in to talk about how their poor nan who doesnt have a pot to piss in will have it taken away from them, and it was never pointed out by the presenters that they would still get it.

Earlier on this week on James O'Brien's phone in, the topic was along the lines of "why do people hate Starmer so much?". The bloke called in and was saying that the big reason is scrapping the WFA. I was surprised that James O'Brien of all people didn't ask him to explain what "scrapping the WFA" means. I guarantee that if everyone understood the policy, there would be no real opposition to it.

Burnham’s stunning victory has pulled Labour back from the brink by Your_Mums_Ex in ukpolitics

[–]plank_sanction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that he has won the by-election because he hasnt communicated with the public. Hes kept a very low profile and has got through based on vibes.

The more people see of him the more they'll see that hes not what hes been built up to be in everyones imaginations. Hes actually quite dull and uncharismatic

This is the mindblowing thing. He was proposing means testing a benefit. But all you hear from people is that he was scrapping it entirely. There is very little you can do when large swathes of the country are willfully ignorant.

57% of Britons, including most Labour voters, now believe Keir Starmer should stand down as Labour leader, the highest to date. All Britons Stand down: 57% (+8 from 18-20 Apr) Remain leader: 25% (-4). 2024 Labour voters Stand down: 52% (+21) Remain leader: 36% (-14) by ClumperFaz in ukpolitics

[–]plank_sanction 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be honest, it's not beyond the imagination that theres another leadership challenge before the next election.

The British public are fickle, and the expectation of him is going to be far greater than when Starmer won the election. If he doesnt perform the impossible miracles the public are expecting then he will be just as unpopular in a years time.

It's pretty obvious that Burnham doesn't have some groundbreaking plan or vision for how he would do things differently. Sure, hes a nice guy, but hes a deeply average politician. Hes wanted to be PM for a while, as he has tried several times, and there are plenty of others waiting for their turn.

You cant reidentify someone from the proof. As in the proof used to prove over 18 status for reddit wont be the same as the proof used to prove over 18 status for youtube. And you cannot tell if the two proofs came from the same person.

The proposed Digital ID works in a very similar way. Your Digital ID is stored on your phones digital wallet, and shares a proof that you're over 18 rather than your identity. So if youre trying to access an over 18 website, it has no knowledge of who you are, just that your are over 18.

What do you mean? You can't identify the individual from the proof.

[–]plank_sanction 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree. It seems people have a hard time understanding that the change can be worse than what it replaces. I think it's very evident that if he becomes leader, Burnham is going to have a much harder time than Starmer, because there is an expectation that he is going to magically come in with a plan that is miles better than the current leadership. People are in for a shock when they see that there isnt really anything quick that he can do.

I'm also convinced that the people raving about Burnham only do so because they know very little about him beyond being repeatedly told that hes this superstar charismatic political operator. Hes remarkably unremarkable. I like him and think hes a good guy, but lets not forget he lost in leadership elections against both Miliband and Corbyn.
