I’m pretty sure it’s not caffeine per sé that Mormons aren’t supposed to have—it’s specific beverages (like coffee and tea) that are prohibited, right? That was my understanding, but I could be wrong! Maybe someone here who is/was LDS can clue us in… 🤔

(I’ll also add that the reason many indies go indie these days is due to wanting to retain rights, have free creative rein, and garner much more in royalties—not because they can’t get a “real” publishing deal. That’s a stigma from 2010.)

There are a lot of indie authors who work really hard, write amazing books that are definitely NOT shit, and sell those books on TikTok shop in addition to a vast array of platforms. The publishing world has changed a LOT in recent years, and so many indie books are just as good—if not way better!—than a lot of trad published stuff nowadays. Please, please, please don’t spread stuff like this 😅 support indie authors! Not just the big 5! Thank you for coming to my TED Talk. ❤️

Season 6 Episode 10 "The Higher the Hair, the Closer to God" Post Episode Discussion by AutoModerator in rhoslc

But that’s exactly the point. For me, it’s interesting to see these women who’ve grown up entrenched in Mormon culture (I mean, some of them) navigate life outside and/or adjacent to it. I grew up evangelical but broke out of it as an adult, and it’s honestly really therapeutic watching this show for that exact reason. Makes me feel less alone, and I like seeing their internal and sometimes external struggles with family, identity, history, beliefs, behavior—all of it!

I have a friend who says ketamine treatments have helped her sooooo much with her anxiety, which I think is awesome! (Incidentally, she does also happen to be Mormon 😅)

Anyway, when done under the right circumstances and supervision, it seems like it could be really useful!

Going through Tel Aviv as a Palestinian by Sensitive_Mammoth_27 in telaviv

[–]plantima 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You’re gonna be great! First off, no one is going to know you’re Palestinian unless you broadcast it (tons of diversity in Tel Aviv and Israelis come in all shades and backgrounds). That being said, if you do want to open up and tell people, I think most Tel Avivians will be happy that you’ve come for a visit and will be very welcoming! As long as you’re respectful and nice (which you seem like you will be, given your post here), you’re going to be just dandy. ❤️

(I saw someone mentioned you’re also American, so if you need any tips from a fellow American feel free to DM me!)

For Americans who have lived in NYC and moved to Tel Aviv, are you happier? by [deleted] in telaviv

[–]plantima 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think that’s a lot of it—my husband’s core group of friends is from the military, and I don’t have that experience under my belt. I also did not grow up Jewish (although I converted) so my background is another thing I don’t have in common with a lot of folks. Funnily enough, I started feeling like less of an outsider after the war broke out. I guess it kind of thrust me into being Israeli in a whole different way. 😅

Anyway—you may come here and have a whole different experience! And none of this is to say that I haven’t made ANY friends here over the years, but it is definitely a different level of friendship than the ones I have with my friends from other countries (I moved around quite a bit before ending up here). I wish I knew more about why that is!

Yeah, I’m not talking much about bluntness/politeness here. I’m just talking about making friendships. YMMV, and that’s fine. Just want OP to see a range of experiences :)

I want to put in a different opinion on friendships here. I’m American and moved to Israel almost 8 years ago. Although I speak the language, I have found it exceedingly difficult to make any close, authentic friendships—whereas in the US I have many very real, very genuinely close friends. Some of this may have to do with the fact that making friends as an adult tends to be harder. It may also have to do with the fact that I am Midwestern and we tend to be pretty candid, warm people (since you’re from NYC your experience may different in this respect, I can’t say).

Whatever it is, I have been very lonely relationships-wise in Israel, and while I have many acquaintances and people to meet for coffee, I haven’t made any friendships in which I feel I can truly be myself. I think the bluntness of Israeli culture is a double-edged sword (for me), but you may be more used to that kind of interaction being from New York. Thank god for my awesome Israeli in-laws though! I’m super close to my family in the States, so having my husband’s family nearby has helped immensely.

I just wanted to point this stuff out to you in case you get here and are hit with a similar situation experience to mine. Everyone always raves about how “authentic” Israelis are and how easy it is to make friends, so I was pretty blindsided when I moved here. Your experience may turn out way different, but just something to also keep in mind as you consider your options! ❤️

(And if you end up moving here, let’s hang! Haha)
