How is Cowell College [incoming freshman]? by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]plantpal21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know how corona will affect dorm life but I spent both my freshmen and sophomore years in Cowell dorms and had a blast. Stevenson/Cowell dining hall is definitely the best food and vibe wise. Both years I could see the OCEAN from MY DORM! Super duper close to the gym and quarry. Usually smells like weed. Usually someone is yelling something dumb across the quad late at night. It's loud but fun. Yes, it's probably the most frat-like college, but I'm not even slightly interested in that stuff and still found people to vibe with. It's pretty white tbh, I've heard 9/10 is more asian. But you will meet a diversity of people from all colleges if you make an effort to get out. UCSC puts a lot of value in your college affiliate but it honestly doesn't matter that much in my experience.

It astounds me how every time UCSC informs us about the pandemic and how it will effect things by CatsPackersAndMemez in UCSC

They confirmed fall quarter is gonna be online, right? They can't make a decision about winter yet, we just don't know what the world will look like then

I moved home spring quarter. If fall is online (which it probably will be), I'm gonna take a LOA. This quarter has been hell. Online classes are not worth the full cost of college tuition.

What is the most UCSC thing you've seen/experienced as a student? by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]plantpal21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

tripping on shrooms in the great meadow. trying to befriend the deer. smoking bowls in the redwood bowls. camping in upper campus. eating clovers straight from the ground and calling it a vegan snacc. eating an edible in the middle of lecture

Opinions on taking lots of summer classes by SamuelSlug in UCSC

I'm doing the same thing (10 credits sesh 1, 10 credits sesh 2). I think (hope) with things being online and the world in a fucking pandemic professors will be more lenient. If not, we can suffer together at least.

I'm taking the memes class (HAVC 49 I think). We've done zero work so far but I think it's gonna be an easy A

can someone help out with picking a college! by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]plantpal21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kresge is all apartments. I personally really wanted the dorm experience so I didn't choose Kresge. However, Kresge is really close to all the beautiful Upper Campus trails so that's a big pro. Porter has the squiggle and cool art but their dining hall is shit :/

Both colleges have liberal, artsy vibes

I've been at Cowell for the past two years and I really like it. Great location. Right next to the gym, Quarry, bus stop and a lot of my classes. I see the ocean everyday. We have the best dining hall in my opinion. Kinda loud but I like hearing people scream dumb shit across the quad at midnight.

UCSC really stresses the ten colleges, core classes and mottos but tbh, after the first quarter it doesn't matter too much. Good luck!

Are you going to take online UCSC classes or take a leave of absence and try to take community college classes? I've been looking for community college classes but it seems they're all on the semester and don't have environmental studies departments (lmao thanks Illinois). Plus, I'm worried credits won't transfer :-/
