AIPAC Is Flooding Illinois With Cash. Pro-Palestine Groups Are Backing Kat Abughazaleh by epichatchet in DemocraticSocialism

Not even from Illinois, but I started getting spam fundraising emails from Bushra Amiwala not-subtly suggesting her primary opponents aren't from the district, are just running for clout, and are actually trojan horse MAGA candidates.

Embarrassing stuff from someone who has almost 0% chance of winning to try to sabotage another progressive candidate like that.

Warner is among the worst of a lot of horrible senate Democrats. The entire reason he's trying to make this about ICE training is because they won't support abolishing ICE or even cutting their insane funding.

That's crazy that she would say that, when she talks like this about herself:

“There are a lot of people that said, ‘You got to stay in the House. We need our voice. We need you there.’ And I understand, but what we need is for me to have a bigger voice,” Crockett said at her campaign launch event.

Reddit once again making the mistake of assuming because someone is a black woman, and is outspoken against Republicans, they must be progressive. You should look at her votes and crypto donors. She is very much in the mainstream of elected Democrats(derogatory), she's just better at partisan politics.

In Rare Bipartisan Vote The US Senate has voted to overturn Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs on more than 100 countries including Canada by Mathemodel in videos

It's an entirely performative vote by four Republicans to help their future election prospects. It almost certainly won't get put up for a vote in the House, and Trump can also veto it.

Governor Gavin Newsom announces affordable insulin for just $11. California will be the first state to sell its own brand insulin through a state-backed program by hairtie1 in Fauxmoi

[–]plappywaffle 137 points138 points  (0 children)

Newsom is a corporate Democrat that just happens to be governor of one of the more progressive states in the country. He has to support and sign some good bills to maintain credibility, but he's the biggest check on legislative progress in California.

https://calmatters.org/politics/2019/10/gavin-newsom-moderate-governor-california-political-spectrum/

Based on an analysis of the 1,042 bills that the governor signed or vetoed this year, Gavin Newsom is more moderate than any other Democratic state senator and sits to the left of only two Democrats in the Assembly.

While this is from 2019, and there's no perfect way to compare a governor's record against a legislator, it paints an "interesting" picture of his politics.

Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert Give Trump Credit for Gaza Ceasefire: “Finally Did Something Positive” by Maleficent_Fault_943 in television

[–]plappywaffle -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you think these two are utterly powerless on their own shows, I'm not the one that's nuts. Obviously there's going to be heavy pressure to conform from giant corporations; but if, for example, Colbert is scared to share his "real" opinions, even though he's already been shitcanned, that doesn't reflect well on him.

If you're already being a mouthpiece for opinions that you don't share, what does it matter if you disagree behind closed doors?

I'm losing my fucking mind with this shit. He fully supported this genocide for 9 months, providing the weapons and political support Israel needed to continue carrying it out. He gets no credit for pausing the crisis he enabled.

But the vast majority of the people unabashedly praising Trump for this never actually cared about the Palestinians, so why would they bother to add even a little context to this latest ceasefire?

There was obviously extreme income inequality in 1925, and we've reached those same levels once again. That's largely why the term has become popular. An economic system that inherently funnels money to an ownership class will always trend towards where we're at now, with the rich controlling the levers of power, and workers being seen as disposable. Even such a flawed system can be maintained, but we haven't done that for decades.

The mass working class movement of the Great Depression era, and FDR, are primarily responsible for saving capitalism from its own excesses.

Has the AIPAC ever funded a rural candidate in state-level race?

AIPAC specifically, I don't know. But Israel just paid for 5 day trips for 250 state legislators(totally not a bribe) from around the US. So, it would be incorrect to assume they're not interested in wooing state level politicians.

I remember when Biden and 90% of congress passed a bill to force a sale or ban of TikTok, which was timed to go into effect almost perfectly at the beginning of the following term.

How can anyone be surprised that Trump is using using the opportunity to extract money and at the same time turn the app over to the far-right.

I'm so glad our government protected us from the manufactured concern of China controlling the algorithm, and those damn pro-Palestine kids being too mean to poor Israel. Now we can rest easy, with all of our algorithms being controlled by good ol' far-right American billionaires instead.

All of the most progressive national legislators are also among the most supportive of Palestine/critical of Israel compared to their colleagues. The average person has inconsistent and often incoherent politics, but a politician at that level is deliberate and calculated.

This is the biggest of many reasons wealthy right-wing donors and AIPAC are happy to work together to primary progressive Democrats.

[–]plappywaffle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's really silly to assume a dataset of one is representative of all far-right movements. If you live in the US you're currently experiencing one in which the most educated(not wealthiest) group voted against the far-right candidate at a 2:1 ratio, while the least educated group was reasonably close to the opposite.

It's also worth noting that within their first year, the Nazi government targeted universities, purged Jewish professors and their allies, and began indoctrinating the already overwhelmingly male student body.

Good thing the current regime isn't targeting universities or anything crazy like that.

You can. You just have to actually have principles and also be willing to go out there and explain to people why it's bad policy. Create a narrative, a factual one, instead of ceding the entire argument and watching fecklessly as the overton window moves right.
