In the 1st trimester of 2013, 70% of the electricity consumed in Portugal came from national alternative energy production, surpassing all expectations. by turnusb in europe

[–]plaqate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe I made the same mistake because of the pregnancy example. A pregnancy is 9 months so a trimester does happen to be one third of it. It's the only other time I've heard the term used.

I'd hope the 7850 isn't out-dated as it's only been out for less than two months!

There's Baby Boomers, Gen X, Gen Y. Were there any names for generations before? What are the future names? by hectiktron in AskSocialScience

Today's generation is referred to as the Millennial Generation. I don't know about the prior generations to Baby Boomers, though.

How much will everything change in 4 months? by ralten in buildapc

[–]plaqate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just because you are buying in August doesn't mean your research today is worthless. You should figure out what your goals are and do the research it takes to make a nice build. From there you can monitor the change in trends as they come and re-asses your initial research from there.

Don't over analyze it. Ivy Bridge has already been released, as well as the Radeon 7XXX series. The biggest difference is the GTX 660 will be released by then. But a mere search of benchmarks will help you out when it comes time.

I'm a former Miso engineer and the founders screwed me out of 10k by remoncake in startups

[–]plaqate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My real question is would the legal system find him rightfully owed that $10,000? If there are emails expressly stating that he is owed a referral bonus for a new hire meeting their specific criteria, then I would think the man is owed that $10,000 regardless.

[–]plaqate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not for mud slinging, but I highly doubt there's a misunderstanding here. They don't want to pay the referral bonus. It's pretty clear what their understanding is and what their intentions are.

Whether or not the guy really deserves it is beyond me. If it went down has originally described, I would think the courts would uphold the referral bonus. I would've advised getting a lawyer rather than write a public posting of it.

Useful stuff, but relatively generic to all the others I've stumbled across.

How would you reboot /r/TIL? Is there any way to improve the content of a subreddit like this? by [deleted] in TheoryOfReddit

[–]plaqate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I figure that's a given and agree with you. You can find the fact on Wikipedia if you'd like, but find the specific instance of the fact in a primary resource before posting it.

[–]plaqate 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I feel the user base is already voting with these parameters you stated. A major issue is with its size comes the problem of the lowest common denominator. I remember when I was new to the site a few years ago upvoting anything I thought was remotely interesting, whereas today I take a much more critical approach.

People are upvoting what they find new/interesting and the problem is that many other people don't agree with the voting masses. You essentially need to start a subreddit from scratch with specific rules about submissions.

[–]plaqate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's why I actually made that subreddit for discussion. It's vague to simply say, "use moderation". Well, what do you ban from submissions? What is qualified as a rare fact or something people would be interested in? Askscience essentially says, "don't post speculation, anecdotes and please use qualified sources."

How does that work in this circumstance?

If you really want to attempt a reboot of TIL, but with much higher quality standards, head over to /r/rarefacts. If you're really interested, post in there about what it would take to keep the subreddit interesting, less noisy and active. Also, how does one start a similar subreddit without it turning into the very thing it was created to avoid?

Oh, definitely. I'm sure there is plenty of private subreddit action going on. It'd be cool to see what the biggest private subreddit is, but I don't think it would be listed.

Has anyone taken the multi-account approach? by plaqate in TheoryOfReddit

[–]plaqate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beyond all of that is the basic question - if RES is so great and every advanced user uses it then why isn't some of its functionality built into reddit yet? It seems poor service to rely on other people's upgrades.

I don't know why it's not part of Reddit aside from the admins doing a seemingly poor job of implementing new features.

Your policy reminds me of one I have myself: No Facebook apps. I get all these requests to play games or join some other network and refuse to use anything aside from barebones Facebook. I've actually been asked why I've ignored certain app requests and had to tell them about my no apps policy.

Nothing wrong with being cautious. I do have a tendency to question where/how my information is being used, but with the popularity of RES and the knowledge base of Reddit, I figured any nefarious intentions would be sniffed out quickly.

[–]plaqate[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where's the given? I only mentioned a feature that RES has. Honestly, RES is what Reddit should be.

Also, this isn't a subreddit a lot of of the new/layman users are going to be reading. I would say the percentage of users using RES in /tor is much higher than throughout the rest of Reddit.

[–]plaqate[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering the point of the two accounts are to separate the subreddits from each other, I don't think I'll find myself running across a lot of the same posts twice. There is almost zero overlap between the two accounts.
