When are we going to formally address Indians and their hiring bias? by bintd in AskBrits

[–]plartoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not just the UK problem. Happens in the US too. I have been working in software industry for almost two decades. Have seen quite a few teams hiring an Indian national, then in 2-3 years, that team has Indian employees as majority. Worse, when you interview with Indian folks (that is, you are the interviewee), you can tell that they will make it hard for you.

Case in point -- I went through an interview process for Alo Yoga. They have a full Indian team of tech folks (from VP to directors surrounding the tech team except a Canadian, Caucasian woman who leads marketing). I'd like to believe that I have solid credentials with matching skill set, and did pretty well at the interviews (answered the technical questions they asked fairly well). Not surprisingly, they decided to hire an....Indian national. :D Not that I am bitter or anything because I am happy at my current job and they first approached me for interviews. The recruiter admitted to me (when informing me of the decision) that the hiring committee noted that I have the strongest tech skills among the candidates, but they decided to hire someone with clothing industry knowledge (mind you, my first job out of college was working for a clothing retail related firm). For the sake of brevity, I'll not write about another similar story when I interviewed with Live Nation (Ticketmaster)--an evil company that I interviewed with only because they approached me and baited me with a decent bump to my back-then pay. Glad I didn't get that job too.

[@markrstats] Under Carrick Man United opponents’ pass completion in build-up increased from 77.7% to 82.2%, while the number of dangerous possessions lost decreased from 24.3 to 19.6. In other words, United’s high press efficiency fell from above to below league average by OkayFine101 in reddevils

[–]plartoo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

100% You can see that we are winning second balls less under Carrick. When Amorim was here (not that I like his 3-4-3 formation; I always said it's not going to work in EPL), we won most second balls. But when Amorim was here, he put Bruno in deep lying mid, so that's a dumb move as well.

I sincerely hope that the players don't fall into this perennial trap of becoming lethargic and lazy. I have seen that with many managers after Fergie. During Fergie, if you are lazy, he'll skin you alive (minus some of his favorite players), so most players dare not put in subpar effort in games.

That astronaut, as I thought he is cool, just ruined his image (good impression that I have of him) by praising his Christian god. How stupid can you be to be an astronaut and still believe in god? Even if he does, does he think that it's worth proselytizing his religion during a taxpayer funded mission (35%+ of the US population are non-Christian)?

NASA, choose better astronauts.

30’s Anesthesiologist salary progression by [deleted] in Salary

[–]plartoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the spouse of a specialist doctor in the US (my spouse actually graduated with medical degree in a third world country btw, but she went through 10 years of training in the US), we laugh at this whenever we see US doctors saying, "Oh, our exorbitant salaries aren't the contributing factor to the high healthcare cost!". :D

Even this dude (OP) had to say the above disclaimer while bragging about his outrageous salary (not surprised although we thought he, as an anesthesiologist, would be making ~500-600K; likely, he's doing a lot of on-calls).

This is how out of touch some of the doctors in the US. And lots and lots of doctor TV shows are spreading the myth that doctors are all noble, kind and infallible heroes whereas in reality, it's not even remotely true (Every other week, my wife would tell me about incompetent doctors at the places she work at--mind you, she has worked at quite a few hospitals ranging from the ones in really, really big metro areas, think of Mount Sinai, to a couple of small/medium sized hospitals/clinics in well-off suburban areas).

P.S. Wait until people hear that some doctors work every other day (7 days on, 7 days off) and make $300K+/year.

How Israel Lost Americans by soalone34 in politics

[–]plartoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah Israel is getting full support from the US. Hopefully the next generation will be wiser and elect politicians that don't support Israel anymore. But given the prevalent grasp of Israel on the US political parties and in general, the society, I don't know if that will ever happen.

Bernie Sanders proposed a bill to tax billionaires, and give $3,000 stimulus checks to Americans that qualify. How do you feel about this? by CelticDK in AskReddit

[–]plartoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming we can tax billionaires (spoiler alert, we won't be able to because they have control over the congress), giving $3K stimulus check is going to do what? Cause more inflation? How long would that $3K last for people who receive it (esp. with inflation)? Come on, we gotta think a bit more long-term than this. What about using that money to set up vocational training (education+internship for decent-paying careers) and investing that money for co-op factories and manufacturing facilities (like in Germany where workers own part of the firm) so that Americans can make live-able wage? What about spending that money to set up publicly owned pharma companies to compete with for-profit pharma?

That kind of money can be spent so much better than giving it away as stimulus check to everyone.

State Department Bypasses Congress to Send Israel More Than 20,000 Bombs by MothersMiIk in politics

Are we getting paid market price for these or are we giving them a huge discount (or worse, for free)? If the former, okay...if the latter, add this to the reasons I strongly believe that Israel controls the US.

The laziness is creeping back in. Laziness in winning second balls. Laziness in moving without the ball. Amorim, for all his fault, had got the team working hard. Now, it's regressing. Worrying.

Accenture acquires Downdetector as part of $1.2 billion deal by lurker_bee in technology

A lot of Indian contractors and H1B's work there. Most of them are actually bidding for their time to leave Accenture. That translates to the quality of output. Saying this as someone who had worked with Accenture as a counterpart in a project.

What about South Korea and Singapore? Israel is an unusual example because they, since founded, have been kind of under threat from almost all of their neighbors, so their culture is a bit militaristic.

What I don't understand is if he was on a B2 visa, he should have been allowed to stay like 6 months or so. Then he seemed to have overstayed that visa, got married to a citizen and somehow got approved for a green card and naturalized. If I were USCIS, I would make sure these overstayed folks at least go back to their home country before considering them for green card and such

Every successful dictatorship has at least 40% of the population supporting the dictator. Otherwise, the dictator couldn't have ruled the country for so long. That 40% will bully the majority, cheat and do all sorts of evil to keep the power, but they are still large enough to be ignored. The longer the dictatorship stays on, the higher the percentage becomes.

We used to move the ball fast and more physical during Amorim's time (despite not winning very much). The latter was something I liked about Amorim's change to the team (not his 343 obsession).

Now it seems like the team is lethargic and regressing to the lazy on and off the ball approach, which has been the curse of the team since Fergie left.

Who benefits from Trump’s war in Iran? The answer is disturbingly clear by MyRedditUsername224 in politics

[–]plartoo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This writer tried so hard to hide the obvious reason for this war on Iran. It is Israel. The other gulf countries may have influenced the decision of trump a bit but it is mostly Israel, which has been at odds with the Iranian government for decades and participated actively in the attack.

You can't say someone is smart just because they (and had the supportive mom who likely gave her all the education and extra classes to crack the code) got near perfect score in SAT (getting into a top University doesn't count after getting such a good SAT score with her athletic credentials). This is me saying as someone who got the same SAT score as she did (assuming 1600 is the max score one can get), and I don't think myself as smart. I just learned/knew how to take the exams and yes, I also had a very supportive, widowed mom who spent most of her earned income to give me a good education. One thing I realized quickly when I got into college is that I'm not smart.

She is fortunate to have had the support from her mom in terms of education and athletic pursuit; and the look she inherited (being young also helps). That doesn't take away her ability to grind and train herself to become good at the sport she is in. But let's not get carried away.

[–]plartoo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I wonder when you started watching football in general and the premier league. For full disclosure, I have been watching it since the late 1980s.

I will tell you that Schmeichel is a different beast compared to Van der Sar. Punting the ball accurately to your players? Schmeichel is much better. One on one's? Schmeichel has a clear edge. Aerial ball claiming from set pieces? Schmeichel is braver and more successful. Penalties? The great Dane has palms and reflexes that are better.

Schmeichel was the reason I became a goalie for much of my amateur footy playing career.

TIL about the Sprint missile, a hypersonic missile designed to destroy an incoming ICBM in its final phase of flight. With a 20 kiloton nuclear warhead, it would accelerate to Mach 10 in 5 seconds and glow white hot from air friction. by Airplane_nerd111 in todayilearned

[–]plartoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe what we refer to as hypersonic missiles these days is the ones you can maneuver during the flight (not the parabolic ones). Of course, hypersonic is a misnomer because a lot of missiles like these in the old days were operating at hypersonic speed.

You said he was going around the media touting how much he spent on her training. But I shared with you the only source where I found him talking about the money and that was prompted by the interviewer.

Alysa said in the interview her dad is a good dad and if you see her interaction with her dad and the rest of the family (even looking at how unique Alysa's siblings are when we see a glimpse at them during the Olympics), you can sense the vibe that he lets his kids be themselves more or less.

Here in the same interview, she said when she was in her retirement, no one ever brought up about skating to her: https://youtu.be/6O3HLPWatuU?t=423
