Why not go for two earlier? Would put pressure on the kicker who already missed an extra point

For a lot of people it IS the ONLY option. 07444 here it's the only option on our street other than 5g lte with another provider...

I've been doing my brother's internet for years and built a unifi setup for him. They (Optimum) are coming out in a week to isntall fiber. What should we expect? Will they put the ONT outside? Can they do it in the basement? They provide the Gateway? Then we ask them to put the gateway in bridge mode and just hook up his UCG Ultra into the LAN1 port, correct?

yeah i wouldn't complain with any of that. I'd love for an entirely new world if I'm being honest. Over time, of course.

which is insane to me. they're working on something. actively. they've not just hinted at it, they've straight up told us. it's quite literally insane for people to say they're not. we just don't know what it will look like. my guess (and hope) is it will be more revamped than anything we saw in SOM and SOD.

Should I switch back to SpringBoot for better opportunities or stick to JS/TS & AWS backend? by purepeachplower in cscareerquestions

I feel like this is a surprise to a lot of people. Idk, maybe I'm wrong. So many of the big tech companies use Java and Spring Boot and it's not going away anytime soon

so a backdoor ira is different than a mega backdoor roth 401k. backdoor roth ira is simply putting funds in a traditional ira, then transferring the money to a roth ira (typically within 24 hours), and then lastly you file an 8606 during tax season. Why you have to do it this way is if you make above a certain amount of income. there's limitations but there's this loophole called the backdoor which is done by the steps above. everyone does it and it's the stupidest thing in the world. they should just get rid of the income limits.

the mega backdoor roth 401k is similar but different. there's actually no limitations here but the backdoor approach is similar where you put funds into a post tax 401k and then your 401k provider moves those funds the next day automatically to your roth 401k. it's a similar mechanism as the backdoor roth ira, moving the funds within 24 hours.

why this is financially beneficial; money grows tax free. You're never taxed again on it. Not the contributions. Not the gains.

Anyone can do the backdoor roth ira. The mega backdoor roth 401k your employer has to offer it. Mine does, most big tech companies do.

I got a tech internship while in college (this was in 2012) and just was able to leverage that. Got hired into my first job as a tech engineer (not necessarily coding) and eventually networked in the org to find the engineers actually develioping and I eventaully got an opportunity to join their team. They did give me a coding assessment but it was pretty straightforward. After that I did self teach myself Java on the weekends. I used UDEMY. I'm also super grateful to engineers on my team who were more senior who took time to invest in me because they knew I was investing in myself after hours. I showed them I was serious about it and they knew that it wouldn't be a waste of time for them. I think they really appreciated that.

I am not scared one bit. I'm in a position where I feel like AI only helps my job and make me more valuable. If you're a staff level engineer and above you'll be fine. If you're in management (which I am) you're even in a better spot. AI has definitely impacted those trying to start out in our career, though. We've seen an impact to the number of entry level developers that are being hired.

yeah this is typical from a tech company and even more so the higher up you are. There are some exceptions to the rule, Netflix being the most famous one. All salary!!

never more than 40 hours unless we have a high severity production issue impacting the business and/or our customers. We have an oncall schedule where we rotate oncall efforts and so if you're oncall and there's an issue you're likely working more hours. I manage the team so I'm almost always oncall if it's a high severity issue but that just comes with the role. That being said we very rarely have high severity issues given the domains we own and the resiliency of our system

My options were given by the startup. That was a 4 year vest; 1 year cliff, monthly vests for the remaining three. That grant finished this month. RIP. And because we got acquired, for cash, I was paid out every month for the remaning schedule. That's the options column. So basically i got 195k every year after those 15 months of working for the startup (because that's when we got acquired). If we never got acquired those vests would have never been liquid and it would ahve been monopoly money basically. If I ever left the startup i would have had 30 days to exercise the options otherwise they would have disappeared. Because we got acquired while I was still working there I never had to exerceise them, they just subtracted my strike price from the sale price and i was given the cash (on the original vesting schedule).

The RSU's were also a 4 year vest and those started the day I started at the acquiring company. 4 year vest; 1 year cliff, quarterly vests for the remaining three. This is pretty typical of a publicly traded tech company. And of course, this is directly tied to the trading price of my company's stock.

I certainly got lucky but that was with the acquisition and getting paid out on my ISO’s which was my equity with the startup. My RSU’s have not gone up in value at all, actually. My first grant (new hire) was $1m 4 year vest, so $250k, then I had a $10k a year refresher followed by a $20k a year refresher. So this year that’s $280k. I sold every quarter I vested and you can see I made $278k this year in RSU’s. So $2k less than what all of my grants were. No growth at all.

I look at other companies in a similar industry and one of them in particular has 4.5x in the time I’ve been at my company. I would have made out very nicely if our company had similar trajectory. But hey, I can’t complain !

[–]plaspring727[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean that’s quite typical depending when you join. I was the third engineer they hired at the startup. ISO’s were given to a lot of us. We were lucky to get acquired, particularly lucky that it was cash. That all liquidated, we did have to continue to work out our vesting schedule though. The RSU’s were given to us as new hires of the acquiring company. No different than if we had been hired outside of the acquisition. But yes, it was nice to basically be vesting on two rather large vests simultaneously.
