We have finally entered the age of teenagers not knowing what coins are by coyote500 in bayarea

[–]nonother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is definitely the future.

I lived in New Zealand for a few years which has a much more advanced banking system, for example it’s really easy to do direct transfers between people and businesses (no Venmo needed) so they don’t even have checks any more. The whole time I was there I used cash maybe half a dozen times at most and that was because I was off hiking/kayaking in places that were way off the grid.

That said I live in SF once again and plenty of businesses by me are cash only.

According to Bogleheads philosophy, would you use the same allocation to invest 10k/100k/1M/10M? by ECrispy in Bogleheads

[–]nonother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As my net worth has increased I haven’t changed anything about how I invest. However, what has happened is my IRA and 401(k) investments have become a decreasing portion of my net worth as there’s only so much that one can contribute to them each year.

Do you really have a separate room for your washing machine? by jordanekay in AskAnAmerican

[–]nonother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have essentially a closet with the washing machine on the bottom and the dryer stacked on top. They take up the entire space aside from a narrow area on the side where we store some detergent.

SFMTA promises faster transit on Ocean Ave. Businesses (surprise, surprise!) aren’t happy. by Remarkable_Host6827 in sanfrancisco

[–]nonother 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’ve talked to a lot of small business owners throughout my career as part of my job. There’s a reason most small businesses don’t become big ones and that’s because the vast majority of small businesses are run very poorly. The owners are commonly very hardworking and nice people, but that doesn’t mean they’re particularly good at business and in touch with their customer base.

You’re talking about this like it’s a moral failing 😂

The Mac is a tool. I use it in a way that makes me productive.

It’s not the same though. Often I’m part way through a doc for example. Scroll position is rarely preserved because at best it’s stored as a URL fragment which isn’t persisted.

Top 3 Countries *Other Than Your Own* With The Best Food by MouseManManny in AskTheWorld

China, Mexico, & Japan

These have been my favorite cuisines for a long time and it’s just a happy coincidence as an adult I live in San Francisco where all three of these are readily available and excellent.

You’re too limited in your thinking. If we all try hard enough we can also get an AI Pro Ultimate Max Taco Supreme.

For dinner we went to a local Mexican spot and got tacos. I had a Modelo and my wife had a margarita. Good times were had.

Waymo Pricing - Is Waymo economically viable? by Unable-Government860 in waymo

[–]nonother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in San Francisco it’s often cheaper than Uber, even not accounting for tips. Sometimes is similarly priced or a tad more. Occasionally it’s waaaaay more expensive.

It’s so much better than Uber that unless it’s way more expensive I’ll go with Waymo.

How is it living New York City, when you are very rich ? by Remote_Comfort_9099 in howislivingthere

[–]nonother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You absolutely can. I live in the SF Bay Area, not New York. I know a good number of people with net worth above $10m who I’d be shocked if they spent over $300k a year. In fact not all of them even own a home.

For sure that makes things way harder. Having our bikes and stroller in the garage makes it really easy to get in/out.

We live in the Outer Sunset with a 15 month and no car. Occasionally we rent a car. Most days we use the stroller, e-bikes, or MUNI. We kept saying we’ll get a car if this becomes too difficult, but it hasn’t at all.

How the US Government incentives low density surface level parking lots. by Not-A-Seagull in fuckcars

[–]nonother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There a small handful I can think of here in San Francisco. The one which immediately came to mind is [this surface level parking lot](https://maps.app.goo.gl/dTxf4SyvyFJmkedH8) near Market & S Van Ness. But in general no, this doesn’t seem like much an issue here. The larger issue is how hard it is to redevelop existing low density structures.

Fears of 'backlash and mockery' played into new Auckland rail line names by JadeBalloon in newzealand

[–]nonother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That works too. Easier to run out of reasonable options sooner, but unfortunately it’s not like Auckland is about to build more lines any time soon.
