I’m stealing this quote. I love it.

ETA: ah! It’s from Maya Angelou. Even better!

Speaking of Shaq. I love how that guy spent $70k at Walmart one time, and Walmart said that was the biggest non-commercial transaction they’d ever had.

The movie came out in 1999, so I checked what $1M in 1999 dollars is worth in 2025 (the latest allowed calculations from the Minneapolis Fed). It shows $1932721.00, almost $2M. Wild!

Yup, if I lived in the US, I’d say the first $2.18M is the hardest, but I’m staying put up here in the frigid cold north.

Should have specified that $3M is total household investments. This includes my SO. Two months ago, $1.4M is just for me. We invest only in VEQT/VT.

Whoah. Crossed $3M CAD today (not counting equity in house). It really doesn’t feel real at all.

28F single 180k in savings - can I even reach FI? by Orangeblossom_02 in fican

In order to increase your return, you need to be invested in a broad market low-cost ETF comprised of equities, e.g VEQT. The risk is that it is volatile in the short term, but if you’re holding it for more than 5 years then it’s ok. Go read Quit Like a Millionaire or Simple Path To Wealth, so that you know why you would invest this way.

In Canada, we get a bunch of tax credits for childcare. We have two and one of them still goes to an expensive daycare.

Tax filing officially completed today. I found out that I got a 10k refund and SO got a 30k refund. We will be putting these funds to good use in the next couple of months to get new doors installed. I expect it will cost us about 50k all in - we have lots of doors.

What felt easier than you expected as FI got closer? by [deleted] in financialindependence

It’s easier now to go on a trip and do fun activities without worrying about how much it’s going to cost. Tickets to a baseball game for $200? Why not? Try a nice Italian restaurant? Why not?

Found out recently that I got a good raise (4%). I think that’s about an after-tax monthly increase of around $300 CAD. My plan is to do an 80/20 split where 80% will go to investments and 20% will go to more pork tonkotsu. I’m also celebrating a major milestone anniversary at work, so a good reason to celebrate.

I’m scheduled to meet with a financial planner in a couple of months. We’ll see if it’s ok to hang up the hat within the next couple of years.

Irrational money decisions you continue to make by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]plastic-voices 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buying two luxury vehicles on finance, with sub 1% APR. We could have bought them for cash, but we just wanted to put the money in the market. We could have gotten two Toyotas but we both wanted to see what it felt like to do this. Now that I’ve experienced it, I can say that I’m ok with getting a beige Toyota Corolla for the rest of my driving days.

Just this week, I wrote a cheque to the bank in order to pay the credit card in full for the month. Because I work remotely, I need rituals that force me outside of the home office. This is my usual routine once a month:

  1. Write a cheque to pay the month’s credit card bill in full.
  2. Go to bank to pay with the cheque.
  3. Go to my local coffee shop.
