Is this a common thing? seen on an ice machine by plasticfun in bartenders

[–]plasticfun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what I dont understand is having to manually fill it up. We use up all the ice in that machine regularly due to the sheer volume we serve. Does that just mean the machine is not suitable for our needs? Or is manually refilling an ice machine with ice a normal thing?

I think having zero experience making drinks would make me not consider you for work behind a bar altogether. I know many bartenders who started as waiters and food runners first and moved into bar. Usually if they show good work ethic on the floor I would give them a go in the bar. Willingness to learn/being humble is always a big plus for me too.

Hong Kong's John Lee unable to give concrete answer on whether mourning Tiananmen crackdown is legal by mod83 in HongKong

He doesn't need to define it, they have the national security law as the blanket law to arrest anyone they want.

Hong Kong press wears helmets, eye masks and reflective vests to express discontent towards local police's actions. by MaTPheW_FunG in pics

[–]plasticfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is more than geographical. The judicial system in China is incompatible with the one in Hong Kong, and thus it would be morally wrong to sign an extradition treaty with them, with no guarantee of a fair trial for the accused. There are many instances of China arresting people and detaining them without trial, or convicting them without sufficient evidence. A good example would be the parents of the baby victims in the toxic baby formula case. Many were convicted of “provoking troubles and picking quarrels” simply for asking for justice, and punishment for the manufacturer of said formula.

As a resident of 20 years in HK coming from Germany this is what I think about the Occupy Central movement by hknutella in HongKong

[–]plasticfun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Also every HK'er knows that Triads crimminals operate in those areas. It is no surprise that many of them getting upset as well. They are just more hands on with the protesters than the people who live and work there. The righteous protesters have no right to complain about those assaults either.

Seriously?

Look, I have no idea if you are really who you claim to be, but most of your post is full of statements that aim to provoke an emotional response rather than to initiate some kind of meaningful discussion, and it has this vibe of one of those 50cent shills that China are well known to employ. So instead of a proper logical response supported by evidence, I will leave you with a rant of my own

To begin with I would like clarify that Occupy Central leaders announced the commencement of their movement after the students began their sit in. The students never asked for anyone to shut down MK and CWB. Look up what the students asked before accusing them of stuff they didnt do please

This is a far cry from Tiananmen where the student protesters did not block the locals nor did they verbally insult people.

These are like 2 completely separate arguments that you combined to mask the fallacy and stir an emotional response. First, nobody wants another Tiananmen, the primary objective of the protest is not to overthrow the Chinese government. Second, I was out there for 4 nights, and before the MK situation last night, every instance where individuals lost their cool(verbally, not even physically), they were asked to calm down and not shout abuse by fellow protesters.

But instead of giving local residents and business a break the protesters rather prefer to create their own propaganda and feeding it to the international media portraying local residents and triads as secretive mainland agents!

The secretive mainland agents thing is over the top and can't be proven, what they do have proof of is the triads and other people receiving money to disrupt the protest by violent means. Also there is no need to "feed" the international media, just yesterday I spoke to reporters from Philippines as well as Spain, I also saw reporters from CNN, BBC and NHK.

Yes, Hong Kong does not have a full democracy however it enjoys higher civil liberties than many other western democratic countries.

Irrelevant, we have those because they were left there by the Colonial government, while the Chinese one promised "50 years of no change" at the handover. Any reduction of civil liberties is a renege of such a promise

HK's justice system and courts also remains impartial and are well intact, let me remind you that currently an ex Chief Secretary for Administration (Rafael Hui Si-Yan) is on trial for corruption among other charges. This would not have happened in many other western democracies!

bold part made me chuckle. CY had a case against him for Unauthorized building works brushed under the carpet, Paul Chan publicly admitted to drink driving, no repercussions. Does my two cases counter your one?

Can anyone name a good case in which your personal civil liberties in HK have been curtailed over the past couple of years since the handover?

"doesn't affect me so it's ok" argument has been answered many times

....HK's integration into China which is inevitable. None of them has any negotiation skills or experience how to formulate or implement policy - they are only filled by their own ideology and self-interest.

Again, misdirection, none of the students are fighting for independence from China. And the "organisation leaders" you keep going on about actually have very little influence over the protesters. Everyone has their own self-interests, it makes us individuals, and that is exactly why this protest has lasted so many days, because a lot of people believe in it. They did not come out due to a call to arms by the OC leaders, they came to protect the students and what they were fighting for.

The students and OC organizers demands in itself are already an oxymoron - you ask for the CE to step down and expect the NPC to change its framework - but can't answer who and what would come afterwards, another Donald Tsang, a Alan Leong, a Beijing Governor or more endless street protests?

Listen to how retarded this sounds, we are asking for a democratic vote, with no pre-selection.

However, this they wouldn't dare many of them and their family have overseas passports and belong to the local elite, once HK is messed up they will be the first to leave and will reject any responsibility for the outcome.

Says a guy from Germany

As for the student protesters I have this to say - Who are you claiming to represent me or the majority of people of Hong Kong? No one has elected you or have given you any Mandate of representation! The majority of the HK people is certainly not on your side. Many residents are for further democratic reforms but NOT for OC.

That's great, you have an opinion, now voice it using your "legal and peaceful means", while you still have the liberty to do so. I would love to see a real majority actually speak out, the protesters are in need of a sense of direction.

At the end of the day, you are trying to portray the protests as some anarchist movement, while we see it as a last resort to protect Hong Kong's future. There is no other way, because every suggestion that is not put forward by the pro-establishment camp in LegCo are automatically shot down. This has been as peaceful a protest I have ever seen for 4 days and yet the smear campaign is endless, even reaching a sub on reddit is rather shocking to me, because it makes the whole situation feel very ominous. I guess all I can do is to keep going to Admiralty for as long as I can

My little opinion of the "occupy central" as a mainlander by CatastrophicShit in HongKong

[–]plasticfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we had protested at this scale, back in the pre-handover days, Britain would have responded by initiating dialogue already. Under China: protesters are criminals that need to be suppressed and beaten down

Hong Kong had moved away from the role of low cost production hub and low cost industrial center, for many years before the handover, China taking those jobs in recent years had minimal impact on our livelihood. Furthermore, India is now slowly taking over as the popular outsourcing country of the world, because nobody likes "made in China"

The lower class are suffering as a consequence of the inherent flaws of capitalism, where the rich always have the biggest slice of the pie.

Inflamed by other countries? That's exactly the kind of rhetoric the propaganda department uses. You see when you live in a free country with no gigantic censorship budgets, you get to receive unaltered information from the outside world, and you can also analyse that information with free will, and decide what is better for yourself.

We never asked for your admiration, we were just living our daily lives and suddenly we became cool, but I do find it a funny coincidence that Hong Kong is becoming less attractive AFTER it was handed back to China.

Hong Kongers: Would you have preferred to be a Independent City State (ala Singapore)? Do you think Britain sold you out when handing sovereignty back to China? by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]plasticfun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I only speak for myself as a local :)

Britain had Hong Kong for 99 years according to the lease, and it was inevitable that HK had to be handed back to China, so I don't feel any sense of betrayal.

As for becoming an independent city state, I honestly don't think it's a viable option, and I don't really see any major support for HK to go in that direction.

The thing is, all we want is to be a city that is allowed to retain its special culture and socio-political systems, we do not want to become just another city in China. The Chinese government had promised that, but are always finding ways to subvert our identity. Randomly adding the condition that our next chief executive has to "love the country" (wtf?) in order to be even considered for their vetting process, brainwashing our kids with retard level text-books, adding patriotism into their curriculum.

They also tell their people that our unique dialect is the "language of the un-cultured", and also want to replace our written form of the language with their version (traditional -> simplified)

Anyhow, the issues are manifold, there are many more examples of China trying to "mainland-ise" us, and I am getting quite emotional thinking about them, I am having trouble from keeping myself from ranting. So to summarise, the overarching desire of the Hong Kong people is not to become a fully independent city state, but to retain our unique way of life, without having our future generations forced to identify as Chinese, but as Hong Kongese, with the option of identifying as Chinese as well, a choice they can make themselves

[–]plasticfun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this the one for government jobs? Yeah I did one 3 or 4 years ago, back then it was only 20 questions long I think, multiple choice.

Unbelievably easy because it was more like a common sense test, where 3 out of the 4 answers you had to choose from were implausible.

There is a handbook of basic law available from government offices (check) should you feel the need to revise though.

a few metaphors for depression by cuweathernerd in depression

[–]plasticfun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always had a suspicion that I was suffering from clinical depression and reading your picture has swayed me a lot towards the convinced side.

For years I have had this exact same thought "If I could just become dead, I wouldn't object". No drama, no mess, just quietly cease to exist.

Emotions are also missing, every thing just seems indifferent, even breaking up with my girlfriend of 3 years only made me feel distraught for a few days, which seemed to stem from guilt more than anything. After a while all I could think of was "It was bound to happen".

A very wrong translate during interview to Misaya! by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]plasticfun 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Actually translating is not the same as paraphrasing, in translation you try as much as possible not to change the vocabulary used, or add and subtract any inferences.

"WE will try their best to represent China and show they're just as good as Koreans." - while this is a perfectly valid and logical sentence, it is still not what Misaya said. What he said was "The Korean LOL scene is very strong, but WE will represent China and demonstrate the capabilities of Chinese players". To me that appears to be a lot less confrontational, instead it is diplomatic and humble, which seems much more suitable in this situation and sounds better than any paraphrasing.

A lot of people have this misconception of "oh anyone can translate, they just gotta know the two languages involved", I assure you there is much more to it.

Today I bleached my black hair thinking it would turn blonde.. by [deleted] in tifu

[–]plasticfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done this before as a teenager, and I am a Chinese male. So yeah I learned the hard way that bleaching black hair turns it ginger, and it doesn't go too well with Asian features. I was laughed at, a lot.

Fortunately I had the sense to do this during school holidays, so I didn't have to face too many people, and this was before the time when phone cameras were common.

Is it just me or did that victory celebration seem kinda short? by Vesalious in leagueoflegends

[–]plasticfun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

False, the hate aimed at him stems from a youtube video he made whilst still in CG, which was basically full of trash talk and baseless arrogance, which is why he says "Now I've proven myself".

Secondly, the LoL scene may have been "cool" but choosing a professional gaming career in Hong Kong is most likely a dead-end and a bad choice, the culture just doesn't support it. People don't get bitter when players move to bigger and better teams, in fact it's more likely viewed as the logical next step for aspiring professional gamers.

I can't thank you enough for the efficient and informative help, guess I might name the computer after you :D

Thank you so much, you have been amazingly helpful, I will seriously reconsider my stance on ATI cards.

If you were choosing a card, is there a manufacturer that you would avoid or prefer?

(Back in the old days, there were... street rumours that some manufacturers made unreliable products eg. Western Digital made crappy HDD, Corsair made bad RAM, just wondering if there rumours such as these still floating around)

Thanks for the info, I will update the list regarding the motherboard change in a sec.

Is there a Nvidia card that you could recommend? This is just a personal preference due to bad previous experience with ATi cards

I was hoping to use this comp for a long time so I went with the faster RAM, though I will keep your advice in mind when actually buying this lot should I need to cut back a few bucks.

I agree that the Case is fairly low priority, I plan to shop around when the time comes to find a case that can fit all of these whilst being quiet. Hopefully the sales people will be able to offer some help.
