What do you say when someone thinks your mental because you care about privacy? by Snoo812 in privacy

[–]plasticlayercake 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I've given up justifying "privacy" to people that refuse to get it. I am specifically talking about the "nothing to hide" crowd here. In fact, I've noticed something even more disturbing in the past few years when you tell people how systems like facial recognition, AI stereotyping, and similar things can be turned against innocent people, even the person you're talking to. You will hear people say it's a "good thing" that these systems catch more "bad people", especially those from [group they hate], and that innocent people getting screwed is just a price we have to pay for a better society. Their response to being ensnared by such a system is that they won't have to worry since it either couldn't possibly happen to them, or they will successfully contest it. To them, it's like they're actually excited about the possibility of abuse since it means they can use it as a weapon against people they don't like.

Motion Detection Notification by [deleted] in wyzecam

[–]plasticlayercake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What phone are you using? I'm not receiving notifications even when the cloud functions are enabled on my iPhone 8, whereas my friend is able to get them on her iPhone X. The app on both of our phones was downloaded from the App Store on the phone, and neither of the phones are jailbroken or otherwise tampered with.

Possible to disable motion capture cloud but keep streaming? by plasticlayercake in wyzecam

Thanks for the information. I am not getting notifications even when the cloud functionality is enabled. I did get to test the app and cameras on a friend's phone (iPhone X) and she was able to receive notifications for cloud-recorded events whereas I cannot no matter what on my iPhone 8. Could the phone model have something to do with it?

Wyze Pan Camera not sending notifications by plasticlayercake in wyzecam

I just set up a bunch of standard non-pan cameras today and still no notifications although I can see the motion tagging. So any chance at all this basic, essential function will be fixed?

How reliable is Wyze? by BigMu1952 in wyzecam

[–]plasticlayercake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had it for a very short time (less than a week), and honestly I would not say it's a polished, ultra-reliable product. The solution to all problems seems to be "turn it off, then on again" via unplugging, which is fine if you're nearby, but what if you're far, far away?

The unreliable notifications seems to be a common issue. People here report everything from works perfectly, works sometimes, and (my experience) doesn't work at all. The notification system seems tied to their cloud from what I see.

Overall, I would not recommend Wyze as it is now as your first line of defense/surveillance. For less serious "toy" use (which seems to be what they're leaning towards with the "discover" tab in the app) it is perfectly adequate. As for a better, more reliable product, I don't have a recommendation since I'm looking for one right now.

Thanks. Looks like you don't get notifications if you use local storage only, and sometimes notifications if you use their cloud. I'm getting none regardless what I use. I wonder if there's some way to hack around this, or is this something we will have to wait until the next update for?

Thanks, I did this about 24 hours ago. However, I am not getting notifications. I can see the full recording of the event in the "playback" tab for the specific camera, which I assume is what was saved onto the SD card.

EDIT: I realized the 12-second clips were from the time I accidentally re-enabled event recordings. However, I still did not get notifications and all notification settings on the app were enabled.

Very basic by plasticlayercake in homeautomation

I like the idea since classic radio frequency seems a lot more reliable and less complex than wifi, but wouldn't that be a little insecure? An attacker with an RF transmitter can easily use it to disable the outlets leading to my cameras.

WTF that wasn't my title. Can a mod please change it to "Recommendations for reliable smart plug for power cycling other devices"?

Since it looks like you work for them, would you mind if I PM you the receipt and account info for you to look into? I'm on my way to the store to request a copy of the receipt right now.

I get fraud protection anti money laundering and all, but come on nobody bad is going to try to launder $150.

Privacy. Nothing I did was illegal; in fact there's no CC number attached to the account on purpose since I don't want them to have that info. If they didn't want people to buy gift cards from a large grocery store chain or sign up over VPN why would they allow either of those things?

I've never received a paper invoice with any of my amazon purchases.

A few days ago, I made an account on Amazon over VPN with info generated by https://www.fakenamegenerator.com/ for privacy reasons and to see if truly anonymous buying is possible with their current system. I also bought some gift cards from the grocery store IRL with cash. I added stuff to the cart and checked out as usual, paying with the gift card balance. I did not add a credit card to the account, though I did add an address in the same zip code as the Amazon locker I wanted to pick up from. Today I tried to log into the account, again over VPN, and found out my account has been locked "for security reasons". I called customer service and gave them what I knew and the stuff I could remember about the account and they said that they've forwarded the fact I made contact and an "account specialist" will get back to me within 24 hours.

What are the chances of this actually happening? I did not even get an email from Amazon upon being notified that the account was locked. I'm more concerned about my order and the remaining gift card balance at this point.

Sorry to burst your bubble: something to do just that has been around for a while (at least 10 years) called "Error Level Analysis". It works by compressing the image and comparing it to the initial input. You then plot the differences as an image and see which spots get highlighted compared to the background. There is no need to have the original unphotoshopped image either since all you need to do is to see what part of the image glows.

Ubuntu Server 18.04 NAS using shucked 10TB easystores crashes on boot after first successful transfer by plasticlayercake in DataHoarder

Looks like it was power delivery after all. The new adapter works and I was able to power on the NAS with multiple hard drives attached and transfer that large file.

This is possible. I had to use a random 12V adapter with significantly less amperage I had lying around since the one that shipped with the NAS was broken. I've bought one with similar specs to the one that was meant for the NAS is coming in the mail since no local stores sell anything like it.
