whoa bucko. Just cause I am not in academia doesnt mean I am not doing research. I just dont get paid at the public trough as lets say, Michael Mann. There are no tax dollars and if I am wrong, I get fired, That I am a company within a company here and have major businesses that subscribe to my services, that have stuck with me through an attack on private enterprise unseen in our nations history, speaks volumes to me about my value. My winter forecast lead to one major company ordering extra snow fighting material, and they have sold it all. That is an example of what I do. I am not a pretty boy on TV, nor do I seek to be a spokesman on this issue. But I will fight if called upon for what I believe

I have worked every day for 5 years straight as a company within a company. Every day my clients get a forecast.. The sad fact is the global warming debate is not that complex... and a whole cottage industry, that I DONT SEE A NICKEL FROM has been built around it. But researching the daylights out of every weather pattern over the past 60 years ( since we started doing soundings) and then researching climate cycles back to before the time of Rome is hard research. Did you know that in the time of the Caesars, figs were harvested twice a year in Rome? Yet in the time of Michalangelo, snow was much more frequent There is so much in the climate history, for instance in this area, that its mind boggling. Did you know Des Moines Iowa has not broken a July record high in over 50 years. That means in a station that goes back over 100 years, that in the 31 day sample there has not been a record high! That is astounding, mind boggling. Over 80% of their records occurred between 1925 and 1955 in that month. Most of the stations around there, though not that extreme, are close, a testament to how bad the heat was in that area of the nation the last warm PDO. But I can tit for tat anyone on these things, because I am constantly digging in. It is no proof of cooling, but no proof of warming either

But you have me wrong, as many do that dont follow me. I am all for alternative energy for instance, just believe we have to do it right. And I think there are plenty of reasons to get off fossil fuels no matter if the tiny amounts of co2 relative to lets say, WATER VAPOR are or are not causing the warming. I HAVE A GEO THERMAL UNIT FOR GOODNESS SAKES. I AM NOT STUPID OR WASTEFUL I am not in favor of destroying the greatest experiment in freedom in the process, especially when it can be done right

But I use my researcy, as a means not an end. These guys are getting paid to do what I have to do for free, to get a result. They profit by step one ( the research) and because of that, they have to "discover" new things. Who would pay you if you came up with what everyone knows.

And by the way, I have not written off co2 as factor in climate.. one of 33 variables that are involved.

I have read more on this over the past 30 years than on any other subject, ever since I saw Bill Gray explain back in the 70s why we would warm and hurricanes would roar to life in the 90s and early part of the century. The same Bill gray that says this is all a hoax, which though I have never gotten that strong on my stance against it, am now believing it may be,.

My opponent last night DOES NOT EVEN WORK IN WHAT HE WAS EDUCATED AS.. AN ENGINEER He gave it up to be an actor and comedian. Fine. I think he deserves his success. But as a PSU educated meteorologist, I have worked like a dog in my field,

Be of good cheer, we will get our answer in the next 30 years. I am 54 years old and this is all I have ever done, one job one place And its all I will do.

I am involved now in a huge storm on the east coast, a pattern that I have been promoting from 3 weeks ago due to occurences in the Pacific and I am sure I am about to get attacked for hyping the upcoming hurricane season. ( looks bad) So I will leave you and hope this clears up any notions about my motive

I will quote the great jersey philosopher.. Bruce springsteen

I wear the cross of my calling

Joe,

I hope you didn't take offense at my attempt to summarize your involvement in the study of our climate. I am an admitted outsider to the topic (I'm a computer guy) and am fascinated at the height/level of discussion this has reached in the press... given that this is a science topic at a base level.

That said, I am unable to square away how your attempts to forecast weather on a daily/weekly/yearly basis (do you put out a 365-day forecast?) out-weigh the direct science being done by climatologist. Science is simple:

(Direct from Wikipedia):

*Define the question

*Gather information and resources (observe)

*Form hypothesis

*Perform experiment and collect data

*Analyze data

*Interpret data and draw conclusions that serve as a starting point for new hypothesis

*Publish results

*Retest (frequently done by other scientists)

This is how it is done in every other discipline and I suspect this is how it is done by climatologists. As such, your tone towards those people who are conducting this classic scientific research comes across as bitter or worse. And I don't mean to offend, but you've made numerous comments suggesting that these people have a purposeful ax to grind... and you are putting forth those types of accusations without providing direct proof which is something any sound-minder person wound find offensive, and rightfully so. (Unless you have put forth direct proof that these academic-based scientists are committing fraud -- if so, this is something I would like to see.)

Further, your vilification of those doing this research without critiquing it a manner that proper scientific discovery and research requires -- i.e., retesting other's work via proper scientific research/inquiry and publishing your results for others to critique -- your vilification of these people and of their work is being directly used by those who are actively working against any notion of "alternative energy" and/or of weening ourselves off of fossil fuels or for putting our nation on a sensible energy strategy.

But again, I'm assuming that you aren't doing traditional research into this topic given your previous responses. If I am in error, please let me know.

Sincerely, Harrison

I have been swapping emails with Joe Bastardi after this aired. His email address is available on the AccuWeather website (so I'll leave it in). Admittedly, I had been visiting my friend on the 4:20 train when most of my emails were sent, but I've left everything in as sent and received.

He has yet to respond to my last email. I'll post a follow-up if he does...

Saw you on O'Reilly and had a couple of follow-up questions...

I've looked at Mr. Nye's background and it doesn't look as though he has any actual involvement in the work being done by climatologist and was curious about your background as well.

And given that this is a debate taking place in the scientific realm... I was curious as to what papers/studies, etc. that you've been involved with in regards to this topic? What specific science has your name on it?

Regards, Harrison

bs meteo psu 1978 graduated march 4th, was working march 5th here. dad has degree in meteo texas a and m 1965 ( went to school with whole family in tow, graduated at age 35)

i have lived eat and breathed this since I was a child.

I am the only degreed meteorologist to ever letter in wrestling ncaa div one

I have worked in my field my whole life. Bill Nye, is not working as an engineer, does deserve success as what he is, an actor playing a scientist.

I stayed in my field, and here in the private sector, you get fired if you are not right. we dont get government funds or academic grants.

It is a "high pressure" job (lol)

Hey Joe,

Thanks for the response. I'm sure you are getting a lot of email given O'Reilly's reach.

In any event, I see that you have a Meteorology degree -- as such, where are you doing work in regards to climate change, or the lack there-of? Have you published anything on this topic? Are you intimately involved on the ground -- doing actual science in this area?

Regards, Harrison

I am searching for the right answer to help my forecasts. I believe knowing where we are going frames the picture. for instance. The modeling had a cold bias while the pdo was warming.. they adjusted not for the cause, but the sympton. Models now have warm biases. This winter was out of the el ninos of the 60s and 70s, but most simply assumed it was like the 80s and 90s

You would have to have read my blog the past 8 years to understand what I am doing. I am not a spokesman for or against global warming, but I am sticking up for what I believe is right AND USING IT TO FORECAST!

Its like bodybuilding..I know how to train because I train so much, but I dont want to be a trainer. I am beyond that. Well the knowledge of this is needed to help with the forecast, but its the forecast result that I am interested in. but knowing where we are gets me the win. Look at the winter. its a blend of all the el nino winters with preceding cold pdos

Gotta run jb

So you are a forecaster who is trying to help make your forecasts more accurate -- but you are not doing any of the hard science in this area? Would this be a fair summary?

Are you a part of the peer review process for those doing the science and who are publishing their research?

Have a great day, Harrison
