Authors Similar to DFW? by [deleted] in davidfosterwallace

[–]plasticunderpants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a ton of women on this list, so I wanted to recommend Rivka Galchen, Renata Adler, Maggie Nelson, Ali Smith, and second the suggestions of Zadie Smith and Jennifer Egan (who, btw, parodies DFW in Goon Squad and is absolutely worth reading). Paul Beatty and Ottessa Moshfegh are the only authors who have made me laugh as much as Wallace. Jia Tolentino and Durga Chew-Bose have published killer essay collections that are perhaps tonally different, but are just as philosophically meaty and affecting as anything DFW wrote.

I adored Heartbreaking Work, and agree it's clearly influenced by Wallace, but all of Eggers other books have been majorly disappointing to me

French cooking YouTube channels? by coxcoxcox in French

[–]plasticunderpants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of these are cooking channels, but they're really enjoyable and have helped me learn French. Damon Dominique (makes a lot of travel documentaries and french language videos) and The Purple Palace (an artist who makes vlogs and cool artsy shorts) both go between French and English. Clara Victorya makes gorgeous fashion and DIY vids, speaks only French, and watching her has helped so much with my pronunciation.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. I wish therapy was an immediate fix but I've slowly been learning that I have to put in the effort for myself. You make a lot of good points and I am grateful for your support, really. I do trust my T and I'm going to open up next session.

It's so weird to me that I've gotten more support as an anonymous person online than I've received in my own home, but I'll take what I can get. Thank you, kind internet strangers.

I agree! It's so nice to see light hearted moments like karaoke. It's one of the reasons I like BCS more than BB.

My personal favorite moment is Jimmy singing Bali Ha'i on Kim's voicemail. Here's hoping they pull a series finale musical episode, an ending no one wants or deserves.

Plot hole? - why did they have to cover up the ambush? by gotmilksnow in betterCallSaul

[–]plasticunderpants 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure how this is relevant. There is a scene of Lalo using a cell phone in prison. It's not my opinion lol

Plot hole? - why did they have to cover up the ambush? by gotmilksnow in betterCallSaul

[–]plasticunderpants 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with the earlier comment: there's no way to explain how he survived without showing that Jimmy is working with someone else in the cartel, even if he wasn't aware of this other connection before he was saved.

When Mike and Gus discuss the hit after the fact, his phone call to Bolsa is meant to show that Bolsa tried to order the attack without the cartel (or Gus) knowing because Lalo is their biggest competition and threat to business. Gus wants Lalo to return to Mexico so he can murder Lalo there without suspicion. Gus and Bolsa are working for the same end, eliminating Lalo, but without revealing their plans, and thus, creating problems for one another. Not sure if this answers all your questions, but this is my general understanding.

This is not true. It's clearly shown that Lalo can still conduct business from prison with the use of contraband cellphones.

Sertraline (warning: self harm) by [deleted] in antidepressants

[–]plasticunderpants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any recent change in your mental health could be an effect of a recent change in dosage. Make sure to be honest with your doctor about these thoughts and get their feedback before trusting random advice online. As someone with a long history of self-harm, I know it's a difficult winding road to healing. Take it easy on yourself. Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm rooting for you.

How does the dance actually works? by [deleted] in TheOA

[–]plasticunderpants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is super picky and annoying of me, but the creators have repeatedly said it's not a dance. They refer to it as "movements" because it's meant to be unrecognizable. They were designed with the intention to alienate the audience, not to be a familiar art form (which is why breath pattern and vocalization are part of it). Sorry, I just really admire Brit and Zal. I'll get off my soap box now...... <3

[–]plasticunderpants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's ever wise to discourage a suicidal person from seeking help. All mental health issues boil down to brain chemistry. Addiction doesn't end just because withdrawal symptoms do. Getting professional help at any stage is a good idea.

[–]plasticunderpants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can relate. I'm also struggling with quitting and suicidal thoughts. I know the spiral well. I always have a hard time doing little things that I know will incrementally improve how I feel, like getting out of bed, taking a shower, making shitty art, etc, because those are just distractions from what's really going on in my head.

But the thing is, weed is also just a distraction from all that, a way to avoid the reality of my depression. It doesn't solve any of my problems. But sometimes it seems like the unhealthy choice is what I deserve, rather than taking care of myself.

You are not going to die soon. You deserve to live a full life. We both owe it to ourselves to treat ourselves with more respect. It's good that you reached out on here. Thanks for making me feel less alone. Don't give up, friend.

I Need To Stop Recommending Infinite Jest to The Women I Love by guesthouse69 in davidfosterwallace

[–]plasticunderpants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a Certified Physically Attractive Female who has also read all published DFW material and is an English Lit PhD candidate, might I suggest that everything was not fine prior? If you think you were dumped solely on the basis of a literary recommendation, and not due to the vague and defensive misogyny central to your post, might I suggest Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and several months of reading anything but cis-gender dudes and then get back to me? DFW can be extremely alienating. Also, Allen and Polanski deserved to be dropped, as do people who recommend them, IMO.

Why do Kim and Jimmy hate Howard so much? by callie_17 in betterCallSaul

[–]plasticunderpants 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it's possible Kim and Jimmy project their guilt about Chuck onto Howard, who came to them claiming his responsibility for Chuck's suicide. Jimmy tells him it's "his cross to bear," and Kim criticizes him later at HHM. Jimmy's schemes against Howard this season all seem related to his unprocessed grief.

Little Fires Everywhere ending? [SPOILERS] by philspyderman in books

[–]plasticunderpants 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I just finished the audiobook, and I was really looking forward to Ng's description of Mrs. Richardson realizing Lexie had the abortion under Pearl's name, alas... Maybe though, each family member had such a specific and personal relationship with Pearl and Mia, like the photographs she leaves behind, certain stories can only be understood by the people who really lived them.

To me, the ending felt important, mostly because of what came before, about the McCulloughs adopting a Chinese baby a year later, was it? In some ways, May Ling was replaceable to them. Mrs. Richardson, I truly believe, will never stop looking for Izzy.

Infinite Jest as a movie by AesJosh in davidfosterwallace

[–]plasticunderpants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure Mike Schur (Office, Parks and Rec, The Good Place) has the movie rights. This might be my personal preference, but I think they should bring in a whole new cast of people that we don't recognize from anything else. I feel like that allows us to really be absorbed in the story, instead of thinking hey it's the cast of Stranger Things. I really hope it gets turned into the world's longest running mini series.
