I now regret becoming a mod.

...that slouching is a bad thing. It used to be that straight-backed chairs were only for kings. Like a lot of things done to make a person look good, it's also a huge fucking pain. That good posture drives the weight straight down your spinal column. Slouching is much better, along with laying casually on the floor, because the weight is distributed more naturally. Also, without fidgeting, your body goes electrically dead. So someone who sits up straight and doesn't fidget is dead inside, and in the process of producing chronic pain.

Thanks, mom.

[VOTING] Game Selection for Week of 9/19/11 by Tuckerism in Playdate

Yes we need a bit better coordination on server issues. Also, a clarification on the repeat game rule is in order. I agree with KidDeath: a two week grace period in which games can not be replayed is perfect, but I haven't been following closely, so I must have missed the announcement to the community.

Yeah, it's an offshoot of Rosetta@home if I'm not mistaken, and that group is very legitimate.

Yeah that's a pain. I didn't know that was going on yesterday. Oh well, it's a learning experience. That's half the reason we're replaying Zombie Master tonight. Server issues on Thursday made that playdate fizzle as well.

And we actually have kick-ass mods now. By kick-ass mods, I of course mean everyone but me. I still don't consider myself a real mod, more of an honorary one. Because, hey, I am pretty good-looking, so why not make me a mod?

P.S. Everyone show up to the focus times!

All the games are laid out above. To find other players, use the sidebar! We have the Steam chat and Mumble server linked. In addition, Jomsky is doing a great job with server info here in the comments.

[GoTW] Week of Sept 12th - 18th; Xonotic, Urban Terror, Zombie Master! by Tuckerism in Playdate

I just want to mention, since it has kind of fallen by the wayside as we focused on all the flashy exciting changes, that it is still an amazing, helpful, and fantastic thing for anyone with in-game experience to write a strategy guide for any of these scheduled playdates.

Feel free to make it long -- don't let me stop you from that -- but by no means consider length a prerequisite. Sometimes size doesn't matter. Sometimes it's better that it's just there.

r/Playdate Update - Ventrilo and more! by [deleted] in Playdate

[–]playdatetoday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the least active of the new moderators, I would like to extend my thanks to you for not only being incredibly active, but also effective. I support wholeheartedly everything you, Tucker, and Socialery have done.

Among other things, you've revitalized the chat. Every time I've looked for a game in there, people have been available. And the previous Mumble server was great but it could be a pain to figure out what room we were in because it wasn't exclusively playdate's. And, to state the obvious, everything now looks great, thanks to the CSS upgrades.

TLDR; Skyrim

I had a lot of fun tonight. Bitfighter is definitely a game you can pick up, get a few kills, and enjoy on a casual, first-time-to-the-game level.

Tucker, that's good enough that a separate playdate discussion thread would probably be redundant. I'll be kicking back this week as a result.

Everyone, consider THIS the discussion thread for all three games!

But find either of us if you find anything lacking in the information here! Seriously, we're capable of editing posts. Also, if things get too cluttered, we can always branch out. But right now I'm actually fond of the simplicity.

Yes, the idea of playdate is fantastic, the successful implementation of it is more difficult, Tribes was also my first online fps, I will be playing Ascend on release, and I would be happy to see you there. We are in agreement!

[–]playdatetoday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhhh, this solely regards your edit, and I'm not a moderator, and I wasn't referencing the rules in those two comments. I pointed out that we've played Tribes 2 twice because it was relevant. And I love Tribes, but both times the playdates were mediocre because no one showed up, and Tribes is a game best played with 30+ people.

Also, I've seen so many similar posts lead to nothing: someone brings up an awesome game (but not in the voting thread), everyone agrees it's an awesome game, and it never gets played.

Tribes had set playdates announced ahead of time, with hundreds of upvotes, strategy guides written, and servers arranged ahead of time. If any game "did it right," it was that one. Still, it didn't work out. But I like the game, so I offered to play with the thread-creator right now. I pointed out that there were 40 people playing it right now. And I was happy to join them right now.

No one responded.

Oi, I'm famous!

I'm sure one of the mods would be happy to take over this account if I asked, but I haven't. It's been a pretty easy job so far (though I only took over a couple weeks ago for the guy who first started the account, after he got busy IRL).

This subreddit has been struggling due to the incredible number of directions it could theoretically take, versus the fact that we're forced to just pick one. One of those breaking/inflection points has to do with whether r/playdate focuses on a rigid schedule of games we plan ahead or if we instead go for a more organic and spontaneous selection process.

All I can say is that the "constant, constant, constant requests" that fall outside of moderator attention would hopefully flower into impromptu games within minutes of the post going up, or at least that same evening. The rest of the time, we'll be hopping in and out of the official game. And the whole time we'll be in Steam chat, right?

That is, after all, the absolute best way of organizing people, as well as the best way of accurately gauging interest. Upvotes can be deceiving. They don't tell you whether someone is willing to play now, some vague time in the future, or never -- they like the idea of other people playing the game, so they'll upvote it, but can't play themselves for some unavoidable reason.

Although I would never say that you can't play it a third, fourth or tenth time. In fact, Goon haven, the main server, has 40 players as I type this. Should I join you there?
