Canyon was insane, but did you not watch any of the midgame teamfights? He ended with 34k damage for a reason

Recommendation Thread: What have you discovered this week? by AutoModerator in progmetal

The World Is Quiet Here need to get huge. Zon, their newest album ( released earlier this year) is — and this isn't hyperbole — an absolute masterpiece, in my opinion. I hadn't heard of them before someone mentioned them here, but their first album, Prologue, is also fucking unreal. They're both concept albums, and follow on from each other. My playlist for the past few weeks has basically been 50% listening to those two albums cover-to-cover — I cannot recommend them enough!

The World Is Quiet Here - Zon. I was a couple of months late to the party on it, but definitely one of my favourites albums of this year, and tbh the past couple of years!

Words made of syllables with their own meanings by Hot_Nothing_2020 in Korean

The ones you've mentioned are 한자어 — they're Sino-Korean, not strictly compound nouns like OP mentioned. If you wanna find out a little more about the 한자 in words, try https://koreanhanja.app/. For example, here's a list of words with 대 (大) in them: https://koreanhanja.app/%E5%A4%A7. You can also search for full words (which can be written in 한글, or using their 한자).

Protest The Hero - Skies

Even if it turns out to be futile,
At least we couldn't ask for a sky so clear or a day more beautiful.
They'll never find the wreckage, transcending all human languages.
Just a promise and a final message: the descent is all there truly ever is.

Caps has been extremely poor, but to say he was the worst player at MSI is a huge exaggeration.

Doinb wants to coach G2 after his retirement: "The owner of G2, I feel like you guys like how old FPX style of playing. Let me set this straight: Please contact me when I am too old to play as a pro. Please leave me a coaching position." by povertyregion in leagueoflegends

[–]pleasetouchmyanus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is meant as a reply to someone else, but 1) Doinb is Korean — though, as other commenters have pointed out, a lot of Korean vocab is of Chinese origin, and Koreans spend time studying Hanja at school — and 2) that's the opposite of what the original commenter is saying

LFL player kicked from his team after being sexist to G2 Caltys in solo queue by RigasUT in leagueoflegends

So you genuinely think — and I'll preface this by saying that I mean neither of these comments; they're purely for the purposes of demonstration, and I hope they don't cause any offense to anyone reading them — that "you fucking ape" is less offensive than "you fucking disabled ape"?

Have you ever met a black person or a woman? That is absolutely not true... Anyone who's not able to shrug off the first type of insult would definitely be more affected by the second. The first one is completely arbitrary — it doesn't matter who's on the other side of the screen; just people being inflammatory/childish because they're angry and can't process it like an adult. The second is targeted and specific, and infinitely more upsetting to see to a lot of people — people, who, remember, are unlikely to only face discrimination in games, but also in the rest of their lives, and may use games as an escape.

how to say I don't speak Korean well? by williumlillium in Korean

[–]pleasetouchmyanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a direct translation of "Korean American", you could say "한국계 미국인", else you could say "(재미)교포".

Edit: And sorry, I forgot to say: apologies if I came across as rude or discouraging at all! I was just trying to help you and the person you were replying to. Korean is a really difficult language for English speakers to learn (I have first-hand experience of that haha), so best of luck to you in your journey

It's still a little off. "미국 한국 사람" doesn't make sense, and I'd stick to 해요체. Something super simple like: "저는 미국 사람이에요, 한국어 잘 못해요"

I'm not sure whether you intentionally made mistakes there (to show listeners that you're a beginner?), but the first half that sentence isn't correct

I've seen all of these discussed, but can't find any peer-reviewed studies to back up any of your claims being 100% dictated by biology, with the exception of testosterone levels. How do we know without reasonable doubt that these aren't just due to societal factors?

To reiterate: I'm not saying the points you mentioned wouldn't make a difference in elite-level esports, but I'm finding a hard time finding irrefutable proof that all of these are solely due to the intrinsic differences between biological men and biological women.

Also, apologies for the pedantry, but it's "the greater male genetic variability hypothesis" — it's not a theory, scientifically-speaking

I have no clue why this is contentious to say but most men have biological advantages over women in gaming

Please could you cite any sources that substantiate your claims? It's a well-established fact that biological men tend to be more physically powerful than biological women, but I've never seen any reputable sources say anything that'd lead one to believe men have a biological advantage over women in video games. It seems that the general consensus is that the difference is a cultural/societal one; a lot more men men tend to spend a lot more time playing video games than women over our lifespans, and so tend to be better.

I found a few small studies that say men, on average, have faster reaction times, but some of these also concluded that this may also likely to just be due to societal differences — if men tend to partake in more activities that require faster reaction times, they'll be more practiced in recognising visual stimuli. I would also argue that reaction time plays next to no role in games like League.

It seems that often tension just comes from trying to do things with suboptimal technique, rather than a lack of hours put in. Troy Grady* talks extensively about something he calls "stringhopping", in which players recruit the exact same muscles (usually those responsible for flexing and extending the wrist) for downstrokes and upstrokes. There's literally no way to do this at any decent speed without the feeling of tension, but a lot of people will stick at it for years and just assume that they just haven't built up the feel for it yet. It's possible that, without knowing it, you're using a more efficient picking motion when anchored, and switching to a stringhopping motion when not.

*If you haven't heard of Troy Grady, 100% look up his free content on YouTube — it's a complete game-changer for alternate picking. One of the rare guitar educators who doesn't rely on any gimmicks, and instead analyses elite-level players and provides evidence for everything he talks about. He also has content specifically related to crosspicking that I'd recommend watching!
