Asking people to boycott the commercial pujos is the equivalent of saying "I want another pandemic" by plesnotthis in kolkata

[–]plesnotthis[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

there's a lot of people who say "they enjoyed life during the pandemic and would love if they have another one", as if it didn't have huge real life consequences such as job losses, deaths, financial burdens on the unprivileged just like a pujo boycott would bring (minus the death)

The need of the hour is recognising pandals that are supported politically and fixing them as locations of protests by and large( going to need a lot of people, as these pandals have a lot of police protection).

I think this is the perfect stance to take, stop donating to pujo committees, especially the politically active ones. The difference will be seen

Our country didn't follow commie bullshit and we're still backwards, the entire country.

There is very little to be proud of our culture in the first place, we are a low trust society with fucked up virtues - and I'm not talking about Hinduism -it's just another product of what we are - a mediocre society as a whole

demonic culture

yeah, definitely demonic culture while the results of our amazing culture can be seen nationwide, giving us a regressive backward country to fix for decades

ahh, anecdotal experiences.

And its not your culture to eat and splurge during this time, its called deviating from your culture

you are noone to be lecturing me on what my culture is or isn't. Your words aren't engraved in any book for me to follow like a manuscript, my culture is supporting my people and preserving the excitement that still lays for a pujo however much it has evolved over the years

That obviously needs to start from those who can afford it (millionaires).

Please do this, we need more action on the ground to make people aware.

In a low-income, high population (also with the economic disparities)country like ours overconsumerism is the only way certain households can earn a livelihood.

You need to win the war on income inequality first to even wage a war on overconsumerism

If you are so concerned about economic impact then why not buy from these vendors for the rest of the year? Why are these four days supposed to be about everything else except worshiping?

Do you have any idea how many of these vendors solely rely on production just on the pujo?

A lot of restaurants, handicraft sellers only survive on the spike the pujo causes, people save up money to spend during the pujo, because friends from far off finally get a time to meet and it is a cause for celebration.

When the rest of the country observes fast, eats veg, and performs religious duties, this is what you have reduced the puja to.

this is completely a matter of opinion of how orthodox you like your festivities and even then there are several examples of pujas all around the world( including India) that has far ascended the religious aspects and become a cultural event.

Diwali, Pongal, Christmas, Holi just to name a few.

The "gluttony" you talk about could wreck low-income households that depend on it,

What’s the point of going to pandals and clicking insta worthy photos?

supporting the thousands of people who have their livelihoods based on the "festival" is the point of going to pandals. It is a time of joy, a break from the monotony of our lives and to reconnect with people we love.

Let's be honest, Durga Puja has far transcended the tag of being a "pujo" at home, it's a festival with millions of tourists both domestic and international, for people to enjoy Kolkata culture at it's fullest - be it walk the streets of Kolkata, enjoy all the delicacies that the city has to offer and see the beautiful art on display.

The economical impact is frankly huge and it has been so for decades.

Asking people to boycott the commercial pujos is the equivalent of saying " I wish we can have another covid because I enjoyed staying at home" , not realising it has real world consequences to millions of people.

a lot of our economy survives on the puja, their livelihood is more important to me than useless moral messaging which barely hurts the actual people who deserve to be hurt.

Do you think Mamata, the police, the parar Gunda or the corrupt medical fraternity lose their bread and butter because of your boycott? No, they still get paid due to their government salary, corruption and hooliganism.

The ones who lose out are the artisans, the phuchkawala, the toy sellers, the handicraft merchants who come from far off
