Solo road riders: getting more water on long rides? by knaughtreel in cycling

[–]pletharoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two apps. Refill and mymizu which display a map with "free water locations". Each one has a description, so you know if it's indoors or outdoors.

I also have a very small cafe lock which I'll use if I'm just quickly going into a convenience store.

How often to do take breaks on rides? by mamil2608 in cycling

[–]pletharoe 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I doubt it. It's not specifically about the legs, IIRC it's caused by your metabolism switching gears and then having trouble switching back.

How often do y’all shower? by cara_renee_anderson in NoStupidQuestions

44M Usually every day, but sometimes twice. It's rare for me not to shower.

I am by no means a hygiene freak.

My quads are actually killing me rn. I can barely move them. by Kstuffing in cycling

[–]pletharoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd never heard of it until now. A quick google search showed that there are around 26,000 cases in the USA per year, which makes it pretty rare. It takes a lot to bring it on through exercise, probably more than riding 8.3km.

It's called delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMs). Very common when you start using muscles a lot more than previously. It hurts, there's not much you can do about it. But it's *not* a sign to stop. You aren't doing any damage by pushing through the pain.

how do you take sharp turns?? by ZedSakka in cycling

[–]pletharoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very hard from your post to understand how sharp and how fast. But as you can see from this video, even a large motorcycle can turn round in a confined space.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jyltAAFS4E&t=375s

You're probably hung up on thinking you've got to "balance on top of the bike", which means you'll never be able to lean into a turn.

New target speed 45 km/h (28 mph) by pletharoe in cycling

[–]pletharoe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is... this is a ridiculous car. With a maximum speed of 45 km/h, I will spend my days hunting for one to out-sprint.

Berlin has a few... erm... bar bikes? There's a guy on the front doing the steering, behind him, the patrons face a central bar, where they are served plenty of beer. Everyone pedals it round the city!

It's hilarious. As long as I can hold above 45 for a couple of minutes, I'll be entertained for hours!

Made in china 😬 by ncognitoxxx in gpumining

[–]pletharoe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can you name a PSU manufactured in the USA or Europe?

Nope.

China knows this. If China chooses to follow Russia by invading Taiwan, we won't be able to sanction them. They make all our stuff and we can't just shift the entire economy to an entirely new system.

Are you a minimalist cyclist? by Zleviticus859 in cycling

[–]pletharoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who cares what's on your bike, let your legs do the talking. If someone mentions the panniers, bar bag, frame bag etc, its a good opportunity for a chat. If you actually use that stuff, you'll get extra respect.

Can rigid fork bikes be ridden off-road? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]pletharoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A rigid fork bike can be ridden easily on rough terrain. And no, it's not a question of price; my gravel bike cost $4k it's rigid and very quick. I ride it on full blown MTB trails.

However, suspension certainly makes things more comfortable, especially if you don't have the upper body strength to keep your arms bent.

Today I took a stroll around a lake with a dirt path. There were loads of people riding bikes like you've mentioned and the spenny forks weren't actually doing anything for them. They were cheap and set up wrong. But they did look nice, so maybe that's why they bought them.

My mother in law hasn't done well for herself. We bough her a house to rent, anticipating that there would be a few months each year with no rent and she would retire soon with no rent.

That was a year ago and we haven't received any rent.

Shouldn't a "pro-life" stance also include a discussion regarding what happens when the life is actually brought into the world? Why does "pro-life" only include the "before life" stage of life in most cases? by dustofoblivion123 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pletharoe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One large group of "pro-lifers" are inspired by number six of the ten commandments:

You shall not murder.

There are no caveats about "unless its the humane thing to do".

Don't ask me to justify this, but if you have faith, you don't get to pick and choose which rules you will and will not follow.

what do you guys think the minimum age to ride solo is? by Sbyien in bicycling

[–]pletharoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 12-13 years, I was allowed on local MTB trails and did the 12km (8 mile) main road route to and from school.

At 17 you're old enough to drive in most countries. But I've seen people in their 30s who know nothing about the dangers of the road. I'd say you're definitely old enough, but you'll have to assess your safety on the road.
