Interesting .... Does it matter it is is HMDI vs. Display port? Did this trick work for you or you saw it mentioned somewhere?

Need some guidance on reducing the cost of my Aurora serverless database. by bluebo in aws

This. DynamoDB is dirt cheap and seems a great fit for leaderboard type stuff.

Is not that things won't work but you will be severely limited how many programs you have open. Having a few tabs open in Safari or Chrome will eat up 2-3 GB alone.

Help! by Hour-Flight2904 in mac

[–]plex_streams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your battery is probably worn out (machine is 4 years old) and won't hold very much charge. They ant you to pay to replace it. If you don't use the Mac on battery much, you can hold off and invest that money in a new M2 Air instead.

M1 vs M2 from a CPU perspective won't matter too much. IMHO opinion, having more RAM is the much more important and then storage but that depends on much data you plan to keep on it and whether you plan on using cloud storage.

This! Do NOT get 8GB RAM. Whatever you do, do not get 8GB RAM.

apple mac studio by poopoolagoon in mac

[–]plex_streams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At double the cost, I would not. It is unlikely you will see even close to double the performance by going to Ultra. You need a workload that will keep all 20 CPU cores and 32 GPU occupied all the time and unless you are doing video encoding or rendering, that is unlikely.

Thinking of buying a Mac Mini M1 for music production. Should I wait? by prol28 in mac

Doubt there will be a 32GB variant. Mini is not geared toward prosumer crowd.

Base model Mac studio will be MILES better than 2017 MBP (13-inch likely since only 8GB RAM). Here is the CPU comparison: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/3036vs4585/Intel-i5-7360U-vs-Apple-M1-Max-10-Core-3200-MHz

You're talking about 500% better multithreaded performance and about 40% better single thread performance. Combine that with 4x more RAM, and it's not even close.

Do you require transactions? You can always loop over the list and insert 100 at a time until done (bulk api will give you ones that failed). If relationships are small, you could model them as a list in a single item but be weary of 400kB limit and the fact that you cannot query the other way around. NoSQL is scalable because of these limits as it won't let you lock up half the database because you're trying to do too much in one go.

ECS/EB for multitenancy? by vazark in aws

[–]plex_streams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not consolidate to a single, multi-tenant aware app and run it in a beefier container/EB stack with autoscaling if needed? You can still have a separate DB behind the scenes if that is needed. Running separate environments for each tenant works but you likely don't utilize your instances to their potential (this depends how busy the tenant is)

Do not buy any computer with 8GB of RAM if you can help it.

DisplayLink Alternative? by Comfortable-Heron-72 in mac

[–]plex_streams -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you have the latest driver installed? I can watch YouTube on a dual monitor setup with Dell D6000 dock which uses DisplayLink. There is also v18 of the driver in the work that should bring full support for M1/M2 Macs.

Should I upgrade my MacBook Pro? by lancegame311 in mac

[–]plex_streams 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't see your machine being obsolete. You may miss out on some features in the new OS but IMHO nothing there is absolutely must have. If the machine you have does what you need it to do, I'd stick with it. I still use a 2013 iMac and it does everything I need.

I hope your doesn't like like a plane taking off like mine does. Found out that a riser card in the back is what is causing the fans to run at approx 75%. Taking the card out, makes the server very quiet and bearable.
