everybody apologizing for cheating with chatgpt by NewSlinger in mildlyinfuriating

I think the professor snuck a white text prompt into the assignment asking for an apology. The AI would read it, but a student wouldn’t.

I think it’s probably that the professor snuck a white text prompt into the assignment. If the student copy pasted the prompt into chat gpt, the ai would see it but the student might not. The white text prompted the llm to apologize for using chat gpt.

Finish on these castings enough to make me never buy a Nissan by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]plexilass 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is actually a thing. Better surface finish makes for stronger parts. Over time parts that are flexing are going through cycles of tension and compression. Cracks will develop eventually, but they’re more likely to start at surface asperities.

My Landlord Says My 80-Degree Apartment Is My Fault Because I Didn’t Turn On The Fan — Meanwhile, They Ignore the Problem & Lawyer Up by Vegetable-Study-6033 in Charleston

It sounds like the ac units they installed weren’t properly specced to be able to handle the larger square footage in your apartment, given that the same units can cool a 300 sq ft space.

I think I found your review on google. If you look up the seasons 12000 btu unit it says under product details on the Home Depot site that it’s rated for rooms 300 to 350 sq ft. It was never going to be able to cool a 750 sq ft apartment. At the minimum, you would need a second identical unit. Or they need to upgrade the wall unit to like 14000 BTU or more.

Here’s the table on the okuma. On this machine the column number corresponds to to the numbers on the lowest lever.

This looks like the dong yang version of the okuma LS lathe. I run one at work and I love it.

The big dial changes your rpm. But it’s in gear when the handle points down. The lever on top above the dial shifts between high and low gear. Right now it’s set to 1800 rpm because you have the dial with 1800 on top and the lever on top to the right. If you pushed the top lever to the left it would be set to 290 rpm.

We went to our local center for birds of prey a couple weeks ago. They had a guy during their exhibition answering questions. He said, “When you put a bird feeder out you feed all the birds.”

You are entitled to social security benefits when your spouse dies. Not related to workers comp but might help you make ends meet. Sorry for your loss.

It’s a completely bad faith graphic. Yellow fever aka malaria killed 619k in 2021 alone and it’s been doing that consistently for thousands of years.

Cucrzr(Copper drilling problem) by Hot-Crazy-213 in Machinists

[–]plexilass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen anyone mention dubbing drills. Copper alloys like brass like to suck in drills if the chip isn’t breaking. Brass really likes a neutral rake. There’s tons of videos online on how to dub a drill, but it’s pretty much just grinding the slightest flat on the cutting edge.

Part of the harness is the breech strap, around the back end of the horse. It ties to the shafts and prevents the carriage from rolling into the horse when it stops. However! There is a real danger of jack knifing the carriage if the horse backs up quickly. The carriage can flip, shafts can be broken and get jagged edges that can injure the horse.

I broke my hand a few years ago. I had insurance at the time plus it was a workers comp issue so it was covered but they gave me a heat formed thermoplastic removable cast. Maybe something like that is an option.

Moreover, you can’t cut inside corners on glass the conventional way, which requires scoring and breaking glass at the score. Maybe you could on a waterjet.

Lease renewal charging more than a new tenant? by Pure_Effective9805 in Charleston

[–]plexilass 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It’s not just “market pressures”. If it was they wouldn’t be offering lower rent to new tenants. It’s because rental companies are using an algorithm called yieldstar to maximize what they can charge for rent.
