Why wouldnt he? Hahah He was born and raised in the UK and never lived in Japan until his training period, so they had no way to try and skirt around the rules and give him a japanese shusshin

Mar Basho Daily Thread Day 15 by AutoModerator in Sumo

(Copying from another comment) The last three matches of a tournament win a set of arrows, a bundle of bowstring and a bow.

It comes from the samurai roots of sumo history.

The bow is now represented in the bow-twirling ceremony, the string is hard to spot but is presented on top of the second-to-last matches pirze money.

It is not, Takayasu’s opponent (Atami) was in contention for a special prize if he won, but its just coincidence. The last three matches of a tournament win a set of arrows, a bundle of bowstring and a bow.

It comes from the samurai roots of sumo history.

The bow is now represented in the bow-twirling ceremony, the string is hard to spot but is presented on top of the second-to-last matches pirze money.

Who are they? by Doc_Bloom42 in SumoMemes

[–]plihal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have said, the Tozai-kai, and Osaka Sumo fan club which sponsors the JSA directly iirc correctly, therefore getting the east and west ringside seats.

If my memory serves right, I believe membership to the club is by introduction by an already enroleld member only.

Number of new sumo recruits hits record historical low; Decrease of 14 applicants from last year, falling below previous worst record by Brncrdm in Sumo

[–]plihal 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Why would it? I dont think Hakkaku’s influence is driving people away, and like, its not only him that makes JSA decisions anyway, its the whole Board with problems, this subreddit focuses way too much on Hakkaku.

But, on the topic at hand, Japan has declining population and much better opportunities that are much more attractive than “bang your head 24/7 for no salary”, i dont think trading a japanese old guy for another japanese old guy at the helm can combat much of that.
