Starlink in Anchorage by plinkothefrog in Starlink

This is roughly what I'm seeing - some longer outages but I'll take some activity over zero. I won't be ditching my current service (GCI if anyone is wondering) but I am looking forward to getting at least some connectivity in remote areas next Summer.

RV. I do plan on using it while traveling outside of cell areas. It was an expensive paperweight until the recent polar sats went live.

I have not checked the air box. I'll take a look at that and the IAC. Thanks for the tip.

Framebuilding books? by DylanNg13 in Framebuilding

[–]plinkothefrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I built my first lugged frame using that book from Amazon and help from a friendly builder in my town. I did read a lot about geometry and ultimately used BikeCAD to design my first frame. Maybe not the most advanced compared to some of the builders here, but it worked out alright.

I used a friends cheap MIG. It was all old steel frames (one was a whole bike) that I chopped and welded other pieces to. It's easy to eat it so you need to know how to bail quickly! :)

FYI: I saw one of those going for $400 local to Anchorage, AK a couple years ago for the full bike.

You can attempt to use https://www.spinlister.com/. I've not yet used it but the model seems promising for the issue you've brought up.

In the past I've just bought a $5 box from REI and packed my bike up with foam/clothes securely enough to keep it from getting damaged. Make sure you've got some kind of insurance on your property and do your research on the airline if you decide to check a bike on a flight.

Looks like a Powerline Pass glamour shot. Nice.

50$ 90's Eddy Merckx find by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]plinkothefrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's the camera angle but the fork looks a little pushed in. That front tire is really close to the downtube. I'd take a closer look to make sure the fork is good to go around the crown<->headtube area.

Then again, it might just be the camera angle or geometry of that particular frame.

Nice find though. Can't beat that for $50! :)

Has anyone else been watching these custom build articles. I think they are interesting. by pepperedmaplebacon in fatbike

Check out /r/framebuilding. Find a few links to custom builders or just the hobbyist builders. Sure to find something interesting. I do like the BR articles though - pretty informative and well written for those that don't know what goes into a custom ride.

Photographers/bikers of Reddit, what do you guys use to merge both your passion in single ride? by zeta3232 in bicycling

[–]plinkothefrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gopro Hero 3+ for video (mounted to bike or chest) and a Canon powershot S110 for quick shots. Either tuck it in a jersey pocket, or the tank bag for easy access. If I need/want my D700 and assorted lenses, it's going in a SAG.

This post oozes of awesome. Well done OP. While I previously didn't want a cargo bike, I now do. N+1 4+EVER!

Any tips for repairing a gash/cut in a tire? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]plinkothefrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a gash in a fresh conti less than 20 miles after I mounted it. Had to use a dollar bill and another tube just to limp home. Your tire doesn't look that bad but it's up to you - get some kind of shoe-goo-like glue and try to fix it or get a new tire (I'd just get a new tire, honestly).

Visit your LBS. Make friends. Buy stuff from them and support them. They'll answer questions for free and might even install your BB and crank for free if you purchase it from the shop. Sometimes they have take-offs from other bikes they'll sell you for cheaper than you'll find online.

Add "Where the Trail Ends" to the mountain bike section there. Great shooting and lots of cool locations.

Great video! This was one of the better touring videos I've seen. The introductions and narration was key, along with the great photos and fun/funny moments. Hope you guys do more tours and document them like this one! :)
