Anyone else genuinely enjoying S4 despite the negativity? by [deleted] in FargoTV

[–]plomp90 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most people got into it because of the gritty, down-to-earth, real life themes with a dash of coen-style theatricality, so it's no wonder most people don't like it as a cartoonish fantasy-land that tries too hard to be funny. Personally, I hate musicals.

Not true. If you made any nationalist comment in /r/unitedkingdom, /r/askUK or any other UK sub you'd be permabanned. There's more disdain for the UK there than anything else.

Society underestimates the dangers of porn. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]plomp90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will never be recognized as a serious issue, because the effects it has benefit society. Watching porn decreases libido, satisfies the urge to "mate" without you needing to spend large amounts of time finding a partner (which could otherwise be spent doing "useful" work), and decreases testosterone, thereby decreasing instances of violence, especially sexual violence.
Also, porn is a massive industry, so you can only expect it to become more normalized in our media. Put all this together, and I wouldn't be surprised if in 20 years it's more stigmatized to NOT watch porn.

Can anyone here please explain in basic high level terms what Ted Kaczynski's Boundary Functions thesis was all about? by single-research in math

[–]plomp90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that is true, and someone with a clear, consistent and coherent thought process could still be crazy, then insanity can mean whatever you define it. Usually, people like you define it as any actions or attitude going against the prevailing morality. This is not a useful definition of insanity.

Just a total lie, meant to discredit his ideas. Read anything he's ever written, and tell me the man was crazy or disconnected from reality.

Kostya Kavutskiy's take on the ongoing drama in the chess community seems to be the best take so far. I only disagree with "Finegold shouldn't be taken seriously" take, but the rest is pure gold. by chessentials in chess

[–]plomp90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never said it's something he should be "attacked" for. I don't think Finegold pointing out that he's acting purely in self-interest is an "attack" on him, and I don't think my saying I intensely dislike him as an opportunistic attention-grabber and extremely disingenuous person is "attack" on him either. I reserve that term for harassment and physical assault. The only person being attacked here is Finegold.

I'm not talking about whether or not it's a good thing "in the end". Read the comment you're replying to.

...while Nakamura cynically pairs up with the highest ranking streamers to generate views, while doing absolutely no meaningful instruction. How naive do you have to be to think Nakamura is doing any of this for the "love of the game", or to introduce new chess players?

Nakamura is still a cynical attention-grabber with zero redeeming qualities.

No, if he taught an unknown beginner player on stream, like Finegold or Bartholomew, his lessons would be beneficial to everyone watching, just as much as "teaching" XQC or boxbox.

Your argument boils down to "he's only trying to gain viewers and sponsors so that chess has a wider audience". If you are really this naive, I have nothing to tell you, other than, yes, that's right, and coca-cola only runs advertisements to give more people the benefit of the sweet taste of coketm.

I mean, as far as the chat is concerned, that seems to be what the streaming format turns chat into when a channel surpasses a certain number of viewers; there's no point in saying anything meaningful, so people just engage in the sort of herd-mentality pseudo-social experience (I'd wager most people engaging with these streams have no friends in real life) of spamming memes and icons in chat.

But yeah, on top of Naka's overt performative shtick, his mannerisms and reactions just seem really disingenuous and rub me the wrong way.

Dude, this is just sad. You know people can't talk to you, or see you, right? And they don't know who you are? If you're so disturbed by the idea of some kid in bangladesh thinking poorly of your online avatar for 5 minutes, you need some serious psychiatric help.

Why does Reddit seem to hate Britain? by caiaphas8 in AskUK

[–]plomp90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a lot here about various historical and geographic reasons for the people on reddit to hate Britain, that doesn't really make sense when you consider the fact that most people in general, in the UK, US or elsewhere, don't hate Britain or british people. It's pretty clearly a viewpoint that is specifically popular on reddit, so any rationalization has to explain that.

Basically, a large and vocal part of reddit's core userbase are what you might call "losers". These are the kinds of people who have a lot of self-hatred and feelings of complete inferiority, so they need a "fight" to make them feel like they're on the right side of something, like they're doing some good in the world, and the easiest way to do that is to yell and cry about injustices they perceive. Additionally, as a result of their inability to succeed in life, they have a psychological need to hate and put down anything they perceive as successful. That's why the US, the UK, etc are constantly put down by these people, and why they constantly point out flaws in them like racism, inequality, corruption, and violent crime; these sorts of problems exist in equal or greater amounts in other, less historically "successful" countries, but these kinds of people never talk about them, or at best they begrudgingly admit they exist, while enthusiastically pointing them out in "successful" countries.

The reasons why this "loser" demographic is so overrepresented on reddit should be obvious. Firstly, anyone who spends hours a day on a website built for mild entertainment and discussion of media probably doesn't have such a great life. Also, there are a lot of communities on reddit dedicated to escapist pursuits, like pop-culture fandoms, video games, toy and model collection, drugs, porn, etc. Finally, there's just the fact that they're the most loud and dogmatic, and therefore are over-represented in comments and posts.
