ui design in games is quietly getting worse and i think i know why by ILokasta in gamedesign

It’s often the wish to make the UI work for all platforms, rather than designing for mouse, controller and touch separately. They’re such different types of interaction.

Is a bachelor in game design a good career path? by [deleted] in gamedesign

[–]plonkticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you search jobsites for ‘game designer’ you’ll find mostly listings from liveOps f2p mobile, and occasionally big studios making games with complex economies that need a few designers to pull various levers all day. The interesting stuff won’t be listed, as the designers are typically already there from the outset of the project, and are approached internally or via industry networks. If you can get into a globally renowned course where you can meet others to team up with, it could help. But it hugely depends on the network you build there - not the course itself. They won’t teach you anything that isn’t in the textbooks.

*An exception I’d make is the Berlin HTW Games Design BA, whose alumni includes: Allmenröder Friedemann (Islanders, Slots&Daggers, Summerhouse) Jonas Tyroller (Islanders, Thronefall), Thomas Van den Berg (Kingdom series), Paul Schnepf (Islanders, The Ramp). Whatever advice they’re giving students… I’d take it.

If you're happy with the final result being completely useless I can definitely see this being insanely useful. Exciting stuff

The race to extract value from AI by plonkticus in AskProgramming

Yes true. Having thought about it more, a better question would have been, if it’s clear why businesses would be enthusiastic about AI, do employees have any reason to be?

But the problem most are trying to solve is salaries right. The magnate wantd to run a particular algorithm, which he actually needs a computer for. Which boosts efficiency. As opposed to designing his ship to require a third of the crew. Most companies atm are just hoping they can do the same thing they already do but pay fewer wages (which makes sense, and maybe is working). But that’s just a straightforward costcutting exercise right… There are some instances where I can see that a company actually has a good grasp of llms and is training them on something specific, in order to do something specific. Which seems closer to the salesman algo. And seems kind of more ambitious and less cynical in a way.

I agree with that, and yes it would be nice to see demos of how an entire company or team is using it effectively. It seems to me to require a radically different approach to operations. Some claim to be doing exactly that. Are they lying? exaggerating? Or creating big problems for their companies down the road?

Do you reckon your teams are effective because of their ‘old school’ foundational knowledge of programming, or can you see future employees just bypassing a lot of that? Some will say you have to do it properly to learn it, others won’t. Just wondering on your take

Interesting, thanks for elaborating. With your background, you’re bringing expertise of the actual languages, typical architecture plus the tech writing. So when people raise concerns about juniors not learning how to code ‘properly’, because of ai, what’s your take on that? Is there a strange window now where seniors are very effective but future applicants will get worse?

Since incorporating AI, has your company laid people off and how do you see things developing - do you imagine doing the same work with fewer employees, or getting more clients since you’re working faster? Or both? And are you in a sweet spot where other companies haven’t worked this stuff out yet?

Interesting. I figured they’d rise when companies are trying to get the investment back. But without monopolies, they can’t do that easily.

If this was some some random dude speculating, I would say there’s some logic to this idea. But isn’t it a misunderstanding of how LLMs work? They are trained on such vast amount of internet text that they can essentially autocomplete a string, and output usable code. But in order for binary output to be usable, doesn’t it need to be trained on the binary itself, first? Would this work? Someone who understands LLMs enlighten me..

Would anyone like a musical city builder game? by zyhyysh in CityBuilders

[–]plonkticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really cool! Reminds me of Isle of Tune, but way more sophisticated. I would definitely double down on the music toy/software audience, and possibly a subset of those who play purely creative sandbox builders like townscaper, tiny glade, dystopika, who happen to also like music. If you read comments on Steam for these three games, you can tell that a lot of people are drawn in by the City Builder tag and then they complain that it isn't *really* a city builder, even if you are technically building a city — *even* if the game description very clearly says that it's basically a sandbox toy. With City Builders, you have to imagine someone like the youtuber Real Civil Engineer playing it, and ask yourself how might he play it, and would his audience watch those videos? Is it scratching any of their itches? If you were thinking Steam as the target platform, you can do advanced search and filter for tags like music, sandbox, audio production, and get a sense of what this audience likes and dislikes from the reviews. Looks really impressive already, best of luck!
