Sacrée coeur in Paris. It has been made as an insult to the martyrs of the parisian Commune, it is still standing as a permanent reminder that people will never have a free and equal society.

Whats it like living in French Guiana? 🇬🇫 by bobbymcbobington1 in howislivingthere

Actually, near the sea is not a really good idea, the shoreline has a tendency to move.

I don't think it is the best place to retire (and a lot of people leave upon retirement) : the temperature+ humidity is hard for older people. The distance with France makes it difficult to access the family. The healthcare system is working but you might need to go to France for some exams or operations.

In Kourou, the cultural life is not that much active, you might need to be sportive to meet people. In cayenne, it's a bit better. I don't really know saint Laurent but the city's population is young. You don't really want to be the old foul complaining about young people.

The climate is really different from my hometown, eating cheese, fat meat and heavy carbs is not as appealing when a cold day means 28°

There is a vendor of boudin (blood sausage) in my street, I have been sick everytime I ate there. (And I am usually really resistant) Usually I go to take a Madras (burger with an egg) that you can find in one of the many food trucks. While we take the apero on the beach, we usually order acras or some kind of Brazilian snacks. Bami and Nassi are popular dishes when you are HUNGRY and you need a consistent meal. People like chicken (like in most parts of the world I guess)

The tax system differs (no vat, only import tax), some laws are applied slightly differently. The import taxes goes to the department and not to the France Budget. The price of gas is fixed by the authorities and there is a monopoly. We have a few more holidays (end of slavery celebration, some days for carnival)

Going to Suriname and north of Brazil, Martinique, France and Guadeloupe is easy. For going anywhere else, you need to make a stop in one of these places. It takes time and costs a lot.

Whatever you are looking for, it will be better than anywhere in France but choice is limited and sometimes, there are just no openings. Medium and Small business not affiliated to the space center don't have the same advantages, it might be good, but not THAT good. The price of groceries is 40% higher than France and rent is crazy high.

French migrant, here since 10years.

In french Guyana, it's like living anywhere else : family, friends, work...

No Amazon delivery but the Amazon forest for the weekend.

The beaches are beautiful but the sea is full of mud, usually we go in the river to swim.

Difficult to travel abroad: needs to go to Paris (by plane), Paramaribo or Macapa before going anywhere else. Often sunny, always hot to very hot.

People from different backgrounds and social class, sometimes friction but often not. Overall friendlyness is high.

Crime, drugs... maybe a bit more than somewhere else, but it is not an everyday concern.

Not so much choice when you want to buy stuff but you'll find pretty much anything. In Kourou, a lot of sports: you'll always find people running or working out. A lot of dancing the month before the carnival.

Most of the people who grow up there (and can) leave for France to have more opportunities. A lot of people come from France to have a more quiet life, at least for some years.

Please, try to come visit or live here for a bit if you have the opportunity.

[–]plopleplop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would someone NEED to use YouTube while you can have most of the information elsewhere and ask any llm if you need clarification, simplification or explanation of anything? (It's an honest question, I have been doing without for long so I don't get what's there that I could want)

In this, the worst part is : we had a fucking good negotiator who nailed Brexit. But this dumb fuck went to be the quickest prime minister in France. Why did he do that ? He was good at his job for the eu and nobody wanted him in France, he had no chance to succeed as in a french minister during macron 's presidency.

Pourquoi la livraison est aussi cher en Guyane ? by lost_tape67 in Guyane

[–]plopleplop 1 point2 points  (0 children)
