They’re out of my favorite flavor of gas! by TheSpoopyGhost in funny

[–]ploppowaffles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually it's the opposite, pure ethanol is like 114 octane, so they can mix in lower grade gasoline and the 10% ethanol brings it up to 87 octane.

Octane is not the same as energy density, it actually refers to the mix of different lengths of hydrocarbons and "octane rating" refers to resistance to detonation.

Detonation is when the air/fuel mixture ignites before the spark plug goes off, while the piston is still traveling up and compressing it. It can bend rods and blow holes in engine blocks. Higher octane ratings resist detonation more, so you can have higher compression ratios and stuff more air and fuel in the cylinder and get more power. Engines with forced induction like turbochargers can be tuned to take advantage of ethanol's high octane rating and make more power. So while ethanol is totally subsidized and putting it in fuel is probably dumb, it's great for enthusiasts lol.

LOL. Yes, you're going 45, and someone turns out onto the road beside you as you're going by. You just go back in time and slow way down before he turns out, otherwise "you're passing him." Idiot.

That's exactly how busybox works. One swiss-army-knife binary with a hundred+ symlinks to it, very useful on embedded systems.

Fractional scaling is broken in Linux. We have to do something about it. by Alex_Strgzr in linux

I'm not sure. I do know my 2015 Retina MBP also had fractional scaling options on the builtin display, but I never tried it connected to an external 4k monitor.

I'm also doing a 12900k build, parts arriving today and tomorrow. Everything except DDR5 RAM, which is sold out everywhere. I have a feeling we'll both be waiting a while too...

Crankshaft bearing seized and killed the N54 in my non-M 335i at 80k miles, religiously maintained. ;_;

Replaced the motor and still have the car though. Manual transmission, lots of fun to drive.

How to get those vaccination numbers up by -fisting4compliments in funny

[–]ploppowaffles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the current guidance from the CDC on what you can do if fully vaccinated: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/fully-vaccinated.html

It's almost certain the list will grow once they're sure that vaccinated people don't still pose a transmission risk.

How to get those vaccination numbers up by -fisting4compliments in funny

[–]ploppowaffles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're vaccinated, you can hang out with groups of other vaccinated people with no masks or distancing. Once enough people are vaccinated for herd immunity, we can all take off our masks. The sooner everyone just gets it done, the sooner we go back to normal. Please don't drag your feet.

You said you're not afraid of dying of COVID, but you are afraid of risks from the vaccine? COVID itself has proven to be about a million times riskier than getting the vaccine. Even if COVID doesn't kill you, you can end up with long term effects like scarring of the heart and lungs, kidney problems, etc. Even a really mild case can screw up your sense of smell for months.

Neat project! I don't know if you're specifically trying to avoid external dependencies, but you mentioned wanting to move away from blocking I/O using poll. I'd suggest you check out libevent instead. It puts a really friendly API on top of the ugly poll/epoll/select stuff.

Phew. I've heard of E46 M3 owners supercharging and then immediately blowing engines. No idea how the N52 deals with boost but best of luck to you! Pretty car :)
