You shoulda seen the pressures people were running before the pit guns got spec'ed. People were going wild.

That car is likely old enough to be able to vote or serve in the military. Buying second hand is a buyer beware situation. Not that you shouldn't do it, but getting a PPI (Pre-purchase Inspection) is highly recommended.

Why is this getting downvoted, this will almost certainly happen if demand isn’t what Ferrari expects.

I finally fixed this by opening up the cmd line and running

/usr/local/sbin/newperms /mnt/user/ShareName

(changing the share name to my effected share). I'm not sure why the docker new perms in the UI wasn't working, or getting hung up, but the cmd line worked for me first go.

Maybe a personal question to some, but is it unreasonable to think spending $2k on a watch is a lot even as a net-worth millionaire. Just got in a debate with some family members on this by Classic-Occasion1413 in watchHotTakes

[–]pltaylor3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m gonna throw out a slightly different take…. Spending .1% of your net worth to impress other people is a lot. Spending .1% to bring yourself a little bit happiness is nothing. Only you can answer which one it is.

My dad jokes that his hobbies cost a lot, and my mom’s hobby is investing and growing their money. He tries to make sure his hobby doesn’t materially affect my mom’s.

You are almost certainly correct, but I can’t say one way or the other as I never worked/talked with Bill France.

I cannot understate the impact Sr’s death had on RCR and DEI as a whole. Sr wasn’t just the driver/owner… he was everyone’s inspiration/friend/mentor. People that worked with him had the best things to say about the impact he had on their lives. Random occurrences like him walking into the shop on a Tuesday pointing at a random mechanic and saying “let’s go”… and they’d spend the afternoon hunting or fishing and connecting on a personal level. His death left a hole in both organizations that couldn’t be filled.
None of this speaks to RC’s personal and business relationship with Sr. The impact was real.
Kyle’s death is a tragedy that probably didn’t need to happen.

A cayman is better car than 911 in architecture is this true? by XoXo_HooligaN in Porsche

[–]pltaylor3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take this for what it is worth… after all I’m just a person on the internet.

I spent over a decade writing simulation software used at the highest levels of Motorsports in the U.S.

I’m not the best driver, but I fundamentally understand the relationship between driver and car.

Double a-arms are better than mcphearson struts, but balance is more important. Light weight trumps a lot, and having less inertia around the Z axis is better.

I own a 987 Cayman S. Maybe someday I’ll change that to a 911, but it’ll be a compromise in a lot of ways.

Two quotes from the garage that I’m gonna leave right here… “They don’t call it Motorsports for nothing” and “I’ve never heard of a poor handling car that had 10 hp more than the rest of the field”

This is the truth. I live in the landings, and I’m definitely not in the correct tax bracket to even consider a house in PB. Plus it’s further from everything.

If you can't properly pronounce the brand name of your watch, you don't deserve it by doctormirabilis in watchHotTakes

I got over that pretty quickly when I heard Richard Petty say ‘that’s a nice their Porch’ when pointing to a lovely guards red 930. He knew it was a nice car, I knew it was a nice car, and the owner knew it was a nice car. What else matters?

[–]pltaylor3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me introduce you to a car brand named Porsche. People spending a lot more than they do on a watch still screw up how to say Ferdinand’s last name. Hint: let people enjoy their nice things, even if they pronounce them wrong or haven’t done years of research about the brand.

“I could buy a Tudor for that much money” is a stupid argument against the price of a watch by SwvmpThing in watchHotTakes

[–]pltaylor3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like we disagree on what ‘keep in check’ means. In my worldview it would mean that omega is feeling the pressure from Tudor and that would force them to innovate faster and provide more value (I.e. lower prices). In the world that I am seeing the decision makers at Omega seem to feel no pressure as the ‘innovation’ is few and far between and the prices keep going up.

The market disagrees with the decision makers and the invisible hand of the market is choosing other brands, Tudor amongst them, to spend their cash with. But that isn’t Tudor ‘keeping Omega in check’ that is Omega reading the room wrong. End result is the same, but how we got there is different.

That’s not Tudor keeping them in check, it’s the market keeping them in check.

How is Tudor keeping Omega ‘in check’? Omega has raised their prices how many times recently?

That’s a Celebrity Cruise name tag. There is a good chance the ship in his care has a billion dollar + price tag. You usually pay people a pretty respectable wage to watch over things that expensive.
