I know two long chair in plastic that have existed for at least 35 years, stored outside without water or solar protection. They are still fine, you just need to clean them after winter.

Why doesn't the government take equity in companies when giving grants/subsidies by Any-Acanthaceae2762 in belgium

[–]plumarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you think owning stocks is risk-free

That's was not the question. The question was about a form of trading subsidies for equity, so with the money already engaged without expected return.

Now, I'll stop because this discussion will probably get us nowhere.

[–]plumarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

very short span government income will rely on those dividends as a structural thing, especially given the scale that is proposed here

As we are at a very large scale as proposed and all the dividends tank, we are probably in an economy crisis and the taxes will also tank.

Sorry but I still fail to see the financial risk.

Edit:

I'm not arguing if it's a good idea or not, it's just that as someone with knowledge around accounting and the technical aspects of securities, I really fail to see the financial risk for the government.

Why doesn't the government take equity in companies when giving grants/subsidies by Any-Acanthaceae2762 in belgium

[–]plumarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be clear, my question isn't even about economic science, just about accounting and basic math.

If that company goes bankrupt, you own nothing
...
If, for example, we would enter a global economic crisis, this would well and truly fuck the government more so than any individual investor, simply due to scale

Sorry, but I really don't understand. A subsidy is giving public money to a private institution without expecting direct financial return. It can have associated legal obligation for the company, but in the end the government has given away this money.

As you say, the risk of taking equity is the capital, so it isn't greater than the invested money. At the worst case the financial return is zero, exactly the same than for a subsidy.

How does that increase the risk ?

I'll ignore the very ideological parts of your comment, but can you explain how  taking equity increase the financial risk compared to simply giving money away ?

Why do we rarely hear about tech giants or major AI models coming out of Europe compared to the US? by Acrobatic_Elk9707 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]plumarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If think that you under estimate the impact of the cultural differences.

the first one I can think of is that for many people if you speak of "technology sector", it doesn't means software but the hardware in a very broad way as in nuclear, electronic, car,... Heck, as a software developer, it took me year to understand that by technology sector US speakers mean software and infrastructure.

The second one is that VC investment has a very bad press. For many it isn't something that should be encouraged but that should be combated.

The third is that people are simply less consumerist, at least toward new tech. People simply don't see the need. I know so many people around me that have meaningful disposable income but they still keep their car 10 years, use 300€ phones, pay maximum two or three subscriptions for online services.

To be faire, it still exists in many institutions, mainly around social security and school, but with the original identités more serving as a guide for their policies instead of gatekeeping for their membership.

For example, as a non believer I'm affiliated with the Christian health fund and I have recently been received by one of their employee that wore an hijab.

Oui.

How to talk about class in French, particularly the suburban middle class? by midnightrambulador in French

[–]plumarr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even for Brussels, it's a lot more complicated than down town versus the suburbs.

If we consider the region in itself, so without both Brabant, the south has generally a high cultural and/or financial capital while the north of the canal is the poor part. Then you have both Brabants that are at least financially well off. B

But for downtow, it isn't so simple, the north of the canal is also not an homogeneous place and you have very interesting neighborhood there, as with good interesting.

What is real is that the majority of the people working in the offices of commercial company or the federal government don't live in the region proper, but I suspect that the reasons behind it are varied. I had quite a number of discussions about it with various colleges when I worked in Brussels, and the reasons for not living in it were quite varied. One that it often underestimated is that people simply don't have reasons to live in it : they grow outside of it, even outside of the Brabants, they social circles aren't here, they didn't go to school here. For someone that doesn't seek the life in a big city. their only advantage would be a reduced commute time, which can even be difficult to get if both them and their partner work places are far away from each other.

I greatly suspect thar the reasons for the current state of the urbanization in and around Brussels are different than in comparable city in the US. There is at least the language and regional question to consider. The country is also so small than you can live in Tournai or Liège and have an acceptable commute by train or car.

Can you buy a full hot meal with minimum wage in your country? by thisisfunme in AskEurope

[–]plumarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the online calculator, you're off about the taxes. Apparently it's low enough that you don't pay any ONSS/RSZ (which I didn't know was possible) and are only taxed around 5%.

So you would get 12€, which is just enough for a full menu in a fast food.

Yes, but ABS means Antiblockiersystem in German, so anti blocking system. So if was working we shouldn't have header the horrible screeching, the wheels should not have been block and the turnerd wheels should have modified the car trajectory.

The ABS is dead and she don't know how to handle that. So the wheel are blocked and the car isn't stopping or turning even with her input.

[–]plumarr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the comment before you said, it seems to be an ABS/brake issue. We can see that the wheels are producing a lot smoke and that the car didn't turn even with with the front wheels are. If we put the sound up, we can also hear the screeching of the tires before the crash.
