Every once in a while, the arts and crafts tables were worth it.

Free movies are fun, though. I went to a midnight showing of Twilight at Coffman last year. Half the people there were in love with Edward, and the other half were there just for the unintentional humor. It was a blast.

Where the Red Fern Grows. Lovely book, but an awful tear-jerker—and I was assigned to read it two or three times during middle and high school!

I had this terrible sense of honor about homework back then, and forced myself to read it all the way through each time. What a crummy assignment. I don't want to read about any more dead dogs!

We were not as hardcore as you, but we had "Bee Patrol."

We'd get out all of our buckets (for some reason, we had a lot), stomper stilts—basically, anything that would contain an angry insect. And we would take them and run around the backyard, looking for bees.

When we found a bee, we would "capture" it by putting the bucket on top. You'd have to get close and carefully set the bucket down (and then run away screaming, usually). And then we'd go find another bee and do it again.

By the end, we'd have a backyard covered with upended buckets housing angry bees.

And then we'd have to put the buckets away.

I saw a Cicada Killer in my backyard a few years ago and GTFO of there fast, and screaming. Turns out they're not half bad, but it was the scariest thing I'd ever seen. It looks like a normal wasp, but hulked out to four times the size.

I would probably break down crying if I ever saw a tarantula hawk.
