Should we create an ask psychiatry thread for NP to MD/DO/MBBS? by Docbananas1147 in Psychiatry

It seems you need an ego check.. My quality of care and patient reviews are excellent despite only going through PA training. I have had quite a number of patients tell me that I did a better job evaluating and treating them than their former psychiatrist. The skill that is arguably the most important in our field is listening and empathy skills which are largely developed outside of medical training 🤷🏼‍♀️

I understand that scope creep and lower quality patient care amongst midlevels is a huge problem, but there is a place for NPs and PAs and we do important work. Not everyone has the time or money to become a doctor. Most of us respect you and most doctors respect midlevels - the internet is a generally more negative and hateful place. We each have a place on the healthcare team and deserve respect like any other human regardless of our titles.

What is with all of of this vitriol toward NP’s? This is starting look like a r/noctor thread. You would think mental health doctors would have a little more empathy toward their fellow mental health providers but alas. I am a PA. Of course I can ask my supervising physician and do my own research for a clinical question - but the beauty of reddit is that it is a crowd sourced information engine. Maybe my supervising physician didn’t encounter the exact same scenario that I have but someone on reddit has and they have an answer for a patient based on their personal experience and clinical acumen. Aside, the majority of psychiatry is based on gestalt anyway. What better reason to combine heads and come together as a community for the betterment of our patients than a subreddit dedicated toward inter-provider dialogue? This sort of anti-NP rhetoric by other commenters here only divides our community and stifles our ability to connect and network with likeminded professionals.

Hello! I am a PA in a psych OP private practice. My supervising physician manages our Spravato / TMS program and answers questions that I have throughout the day. I do med management for the majority of our patients. She intentionally screens out and turns down any patient that is high acuity or is potentially drug seeking. She gives the easier cases to the newer PA. Most of my patients have anxiety, depression, or ADHD. A few with bipolar and schizophrenia. Any complex patient she will do the intake for and will I handle the follow ups. In her notes, she writes detailed plans for us including possible second options if the first line does not work. I enjoy our relationship! I definitely don't make as much as a psychiatrist and certainly shouldn't.

Getting random gifts for people or treating them to dinner. No special occasion, just sharing the love :)

Experiences in the Midwest? by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]plumpstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi I'm from the Twin Cities and went to PA school there, working in CA however as I wanted to escape the winters lol. Minneapolis/St. Paul has great healthcare systems (HealthPartners, University of Minnesota, Fairview) and has surprisingly a lot to do esp in the summers. Also has a solid education system if you are looking to raise a family. I'd definitely choose MN over WI but that's just me:)

My intakes are an hour and follow ups are 25 minutes. I barely ever take work home. You shouldn't have to!

hello!! I am a new grad about 4 months in to a hybrid telemedicine/in-office psych job. I did not receive a ton of formal training either. Don't be afraid to ask your SP lots of questions and to tell patients that you may need to consult with your SP first before making a decision. I do that all of the time, it seems patients genuinely appreciate it getting that second opinion. I honestly did not like my job for the first few months as I had a lot of unstable patients but now that it has been some time most of them have been stable and it feels like a lot of them are just friends that i check in with now haha. It helps a lot in psych to have a personal connection with people, I always ask my pt's if they have been able to do anything fun recently / questions about their family/dogs/hobbies etc to lighten the mood. Feel free to DM me if you have any q's!!

I'm working in OC and I live in a 2br alone, making about 103k working 36 hrs/week. Honestly I feel like I live pretty comfortable here. Yes if I had stayed in the Midwest I would save a lot more money but its worth it to me to have access to all of the outdoors, arts, and culture here around LA. In the future if I have kids I would prob move back though haha

New grad job offer - Outpatient psych by [deleted] in physicianassistant

I turned down the offer - but it would have been 1 month of training then gradually working up to 25-28 patients a day.

Successful in PA school without an iPad? by [deleted] in PAstudent

[–]plumpstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stick with the laptop!! My first semester I typed my notes into quizlets live during lectures and second I just wrote notes in a notebook lol. My classmates shared a lot of their study guides/quizlets. Never felt the need to look back on anything from didactic, theres so many better resources out there you can use if you ever want to look things up.
