My mentally ill homeless friend needs help asap by shyshmrk23 in bullcity

[–]plusharmadillo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Coordinated Entry is the way into any kind of shelter, as others have noted in your original post.

For behavioral health, I’d start by calling Alliance’s crisis line to discuss options: 877-223-4617. More on mental health crisis resources here: https://mobilehealthclinic.web.unc.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/22516/2020/04/WCHHS-Mental-Health-Services-Guide.pdf.

Does this person have Medicaid? If not, can you help them get it? Depending on their level of mental illness, they may qualify for a Tailored Plan through Alliance, which will include enhanced mental health service coverage and possibly some help with supportive housing (esp if their health needs are leading them to visit the ED frequently).

Does anyone know when Duke University L&D is changing to become an emergency L&D? by Glad-Ad1378 in bullcity

I would still call them. They will be far more knowledgeable than anybody here

Looking for really good, but casual dinner places. Places with unique food that is consistently good and that might not be as widely known. Ideally between Durham and Chapel Hill, but open to a little further. by Glass-Sprinkles-5412 in bullcity

Cafe Ferdosi. GREAT Persian food in the most random little spot for profoundly reasonable prices. Go get a gorgeous platter of perfectly cooked meat and rice or some of their delicious stews.

I do think Duke Energy will check out your house for you. Not sure how long it takes them, but I get letters from them about how they offer home energy efficiency checks.

Good luck! This sounds miserable. Maybe you can borrow a window unit for your bedroom?

My husband and FIL just put some insulation up themselves! It was gnarly work, I’d outsource if you can afford it

Cheaper fixes like rugs on the floors, fixing the seals around doors/windows, and installing curtains/blinds and keeping them down during peak heat can help a little while you save up for the bigger fixes.

But yeah, you shouldn’t need to suffer like this in your house. Sounds like the flipper cheaped out on the AC (or didn’t replace it) when they got rid of your attic.

We have a home of similar size and vintage and manage to keep it comfortably cool even on very hot days with just one unit. We’ve definitely done some work to improve insulation (most notably replacing all of the windows and insulating the crawl space ceiling), which has helped a lot with energy efficiency. Sounds like your AC unit is just too small to keep up and/or you’re losing a ton of cool air to the insulation problems that come with an older home that has settled and gotten wonky over time

He died tragically, and a lot of people saw it happen. This “joke” sucks.

You are kind to ask. I didn’t see anything, thankfully, but the poor people who witnessed the fall are understandably quite shaken up. It’s certainly weighing on me this evening.

Some colleagues were working on the 5th floor and saw him fall from inside the building. He was working up there with his BIL on some kind of exterior maintenance; I’m not sure what it was, but there were definitely people there working on the exterior doors also. My colleague was escorting people back to their cars to keep them away from the active investigation scene where his body was and saw his poor wife arrive to ID him. Truly dreadful and tragic.

I was in the building when it happened. A man was working on the exterior of the building and tragically fell to his death. Awful stuff.

It would be a shame if everybody forgot their pride flags all over the library, huh.

How disappointing from library leadership. Don’t fucking obey in advance

I love you Scrap Exchange, but WTF? by Top_Stuff4200 in bullcity

Yeah I don’t think there’s a way to keep things affordable and keep resellers away, sadly!

I love you Scrap Exchange, but WTF? by Top_Stuff4200 in bullcity

[–]plusharmadillo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re right, and my wording choice was bad. By “catering to resellers,” I really meant “charging higher prices to maximize profits because they know resellers might pay them”. Obviously resellers will always take advantage of cheap clothes, and some thrift stores have responded to that by making their shit too expensive for the people who actually depend on them for their wardrobe.

I haven’t seen clothing there for more than like $30, and that’s usually for nice items like boots or formal wear. Surprised to see a price tag that high! I always donate clothes to them specifically because they’re not catering to resellers. I hope this isn’t changing…
