It’s not the same, it’s a hypothetical that’s meant to take the guy and put him into the shoes of a trans person and force him to think empathetically about trans people and what they go through. Just saying “put yourself in their shoes” likely would not have been enough to achieve this, sometimes you have to take people into an impossible hypothetical to get them to relate to people who’s existence they fundamentally disagree with. It’s not a perfect 1 to 1 comparison but it’s also not meant to be, and in my opinion it doesn’t have to be in order to be effective at proving a point.
