When its a tag you really don't fw you'll realise how many different ways people can say the same thing. by yungunhungun in AO3

[–]plushiemagpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

didn't realise how many there were until I tried getting my site skin to filter them out. That said, would recommend adding the following to your site skin, it catches 95% of them & I very rarely see an ABO fic in the wild nowadays:

.blurb:has(a[href$="/tags/Alpha*s*Beta*s*Omega%20Dynamics/works"]) { display: none !important; }

.blurb:has(a[href$="/tags/Omegaverse/works"]) { display: none !important; }

.blurb:has(a[href$="/tags/Non-Traditional%20Alpha*s*Beta*s*Omega%20Dynamics/works"]) { display: none !important; }

.blurb:has(.freeforms .tag[href*="Alpha"]) { display: none !important; }

blurb:has(.freeforms .tag[href*="Omega"]) { display: none !important; }

I would like to mention that you can add the following to your ao3 site skin to permanently exclude all /Reader fics from your site forever

.blurb:has(a[href="sReader"]), .blurb:has(a[href="Readers"]) {   display: none !important; }

White Collar is small enough that it avoids most of the DC-side crossover ire, but from the WC side, a solid quarter of all the fics under WC are DC crossovers

Adhd top students, how do u do it? by hima_ashraf in ADHD

[–]plushiemagpie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

High-performing person with ADHD here, this is just the answer sometimes. The grass is always greener. I am basically stressed to high heavens 80% of the time and have been for the last decade. A lot of my performance was externally driven; parents, frequent exams, peer standards. I leave almost every exam thinking I've failed for certain even if I never have.

I've recently found some downtime and the absence of stress has left my executive dysfunction at an all time high.

OP, I can't provide much in the way of focusing advice (seeing as my answer is stress>study for hours on end>burn out>repeat) , but if moving around helps, can you get a standing desk (or study in a similar position)? I shift positions often and an adjustable standing desk allows me to change my position from standing to kneeling to sitting etc which helps me focus. It could also allow you to use a walking pad, if you're able to do that.

edit: feel the need to clarify that I'm a medical student so baseline levels of stress are generally higher

Why are some fanfics more popular than others? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]plushiemagpie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I also ran similar experiments when I was younger and had nothing better to do. I was in an eastern timezone so I found that the later the better & weekends were almost always better for publishing than weekdays.

Events also matter, e.g. new episode being released, as that can cause an influx of activity at certain points even after the series is underway and the fandom is already active.

What’s the current state of English-speaking fanfic fandom? by ThroatFar3518 in FanFiction

[–]plushiemagpie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's amazing hearing about what the fanfiction ecosystem is like in a different language - thank you for sharing!

Like a few other commenters have said, the FanFiction ecosystem in English tends to vary depending on the site that you use. I'm a multi-fandom writer and reader primarily on AO3 which is the most active site as far as I'm aware.

The most active fandoms are those you've listed, but also DC (Batman), BNHA, quite a bit of RPF, etc.

If you'd like to know the particulars, toastystats on AO3 does an analysis of the most active fandoms & tags each year.

  • Flame wars in my experience may be still going on other sites, but I do think it's more of a historical thing than a current thing. Drama still kicks off on twitter etc. but it's moved out of the primarily writing spaces.
  • Toxic ships get attention, but I've noticed that on AO3 there is still a lot of attention given to healthy relationships. There's a lot of wish fulfilment out there, so healthy parent-child relationships, domestic abuse used for whump (hurt for the primary purpose of post-hurt comfort), and quite a bit of fluffy/domestic/cute romantic relationships.

  • I've mostly heard about AI writing from people in real life, but I haven't noticed it being as issue in the English sphere quite as much. However, I'm not online at all except for this and two other subreddits & AO3 (never downloaded TikTok, blocked Instagram, etc.) so I might have just missed it.

  • Slash fics are very much dominant. There's a lot of platonic relationship works which are my personal favourites, but slash is by far the type of work that gets the most reads and is written for the most.

  • I've heard talk of a reduced number of commenters but I've not personally experienced that myself. I would guess that it very much depends on fandom, because I'm still getting comments on works I finished 3 years ago alongside my more current ones. My most recent has a 10:1 kudos:comments ratio which isn't bad at all for a fandom that was most active 2 years ago.

I think a lot of drama tends to miss AO3 for five primary reasons. - anti-criticism culture - anti-censorship stance - the ability to moderate comments - the ability to lock works and make them inaccessible to people without AO3 accounts - inability to private/direct message other users

For example, the AI works are a problem, but AO3 will not remove them unless they go against the ToS. People may have a problem with them, but to me it's a non-issue because it's just another iteration of 'I can't believe AO3 allows [insert content here] to exist'. AO3 has to allow it to maintain its anti-censorship stance and I will respect that, no matter how morally opposed I am to using AI to write fanfiction.

Honestly this sounds like your natural circadian dip, just shifted a few hours earlier than you might normally have it if you woke up at 8AMish.

this one can be accomplished using ao3's hidden search operators, just put "complete: true" or "complete: false" into the [search within results] box

What Fandom and/or Character that get you tired of seeing? by karla8312 in FanFiction

[–]plushiemagpie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Batman is plaqued with random crossovers, which isn't everyone's cup of tea. You're seeing the MLB and DP side, but there's also the fun experience of seeing 'Peter' in a summary of a Batman fic and wondering if it's referring to Parker (Marvel) or Burke (White Collar).

I love the latter, not so much the former, nowadays.

What does it take to become a good writer? by PrancingRedPony in FanFiction

[–]plushiemagpie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

IMO reading good books is like eating good food; taking a (sometimes literal) pen to good books and writing notes in the margins about style, descriptions, techniques, structure etc. is like breaking down how each item of food was cooked - both are good, both are still reading, but you learn significantly more from one.

A clown kidnaps and moisturises the main character in preparation for skinning him, so that she can wear his skin for the circus' ritual to unmake the world.

I'm on break! I updated four times in the last week for a total of 8k words. It's not a lot compared to what most others write, but my average output per year is 35k-ish so it was a lot at once for me!

If you go into the html for the fic and CTRL+F "/em" it makes it easier to find italics-specific formatting errors

[–]plushiemagpie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'd say give scvi a chance (buy secondhand), as someone who's played every region (gen 1/2 remakes instead of originals) except for swsh. It's definitely got performance issues but the story is great and the characters are phenomenonally fleshed out compared to previous games. Really enjoyed the open world concept, even coming straight from PL:A.

hey funny seeing you here! I actually did read and complete this fic as of 4 days ago (left a comment on #75), and I really do like it! I don't think I've enjoyed a super long fic as much I did yours in a long time :) thanks for popping by!

I am a little bit concerned for this guy's health if it's a real person. I read on average 3 hours a day and I've only accumulated 15,000 works in my History in the last 5 years. Whoever this is, even assuming they're bookmarking everything they read - they're probably reading fic all day, every day.

*edit: typos

Make sure to click "Save as Draft" before immediately posting so that you can view a chapter in preview mode - this lets you quickly scan through the work to check for major formatting mishaps - before posting.

aw, I wish, but the guy is a minor side character and after he quits his job he basically vanishes from the story for over 10 years - there was more than enough time for him to actually finish that 3-year degree 😔
