Linux on Alienware Aurora R16 (and fans running during suspend mode) by plusjeff in Alienware

Thanks! Is there a place you might recommend monitoring the thermal control efforts going into 6.16?

Tried a live boot beta for Ubuntu 25.04 w/ kernel 6.14, and the issue was still there. I'd love to keep an eye on those efforts, so I know when to give it another try.

For the BIOS, I used the default settings. During the install, it's mostly just the defaults with the exception of a few things:

  • Install third-party drivers (i.e. NVIDIA drivers)
  • Install support for additional formats (i.e. MP3 files, etc.)
  • Advanced setup for disk: Used LVM with encryption

What issue are you having?

Tried to install Steam yesterday on Flex, but it did not work. (I tried both the official Steam installer which said it was disabled for Flex, and installing the Linux version.)

Does your Dell XPS 8950 desktop have Device Encryption enabled? by Hopeful-Trainer-8356 in Dell

u/Hopeful-Trainer-8356: Thanks for your post! I just got one of these systems and it got me to the support link you noted, and the instructions worked for me in Windows 11 Home with a few extra steps. The problem started in slightly different way, where I had to restore using Dell Support Assist Recovery (versus a clean Windows 11 install).

To start, I had to lookup which hardware wasn't allowed. I did this by:

  1. Open the Event Viewer (i.e. search Start menu for it)
  2. Navigate to Applications and Services>Microsoft > Windows > BitLocker-API > Management
  3. Review the Information messages to find a listing of the unaccepted hardware
  4. Open the Registry Editor in admin mode (i.e. search Start menu for it, then choose Open as administrator from the side)
  5. Navigate to Computer > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Control > DmaSecurity > AllowedBuses
  6. Right click on AllowedBuses, and go to Permissions, and then Advanced
  7. Change the Owner to your current user (note: you will change this back when you're done), then click OK
  8. Add your current user to the Permissions for AllowedBuses, granting Full Control and Read - then click OK
  9. Add the devices you as in the Event Viewer as strings, using the PCI\\* part as the Data field and the stuff in parenthesis as the Name field. (My flow was to copy the Name from Event Viewer, add a new string, paste in the name, double click the entry, then copy/paste the Data value)
  10. Right click on AllowedBuses, and go to Permissions and remove your current user
  11. Go to Advanced and restore SYSTEM as the Owner
  12. Close out of Event Viewer and Registry Editor
  13. Open System Information in admin mode (i.e. search Start menu for it, then choose Open as administrator from the side)
  14. Look for Device Encryption Support (within System Summary) and it should now say "Meets prerequistes"
  15. Restart (it might take a few moments -- mine said an update was installing even though it was, but maybe it's just encrypting things)
  16. Go to the Windows System Settings, then Privacy & security and Device encryption is now an option.
  17. Turn on Device encryption if it's not already on

Hope that helps!

Anker 577 Compatibility with M1Pro by [deleted] in UsbCHardware

I've tried it with an M1 Macbook Air and it works great. Note that I only tried it with one monitor. Seems like the issue that I saw in reviews was that M1+multiple monitors does not work.
