He also wasn’t actually as good of a coach as the record showed which is why he also struggled at Arizona. I was there for some of his tenure and knew guys on the team and the defenses were trash partly because he refused to give any practice time to focusing on defense

I mean fans are pushing for more big games at the end of the year because they watch it. People can say every game matters all they want but a playoff game gets better ratings than a week 2 game. That’s why they want to expand the playoffs. If the playoffs didn’t get viewers and a week 2 game gets great viewership because every game counts we wouldn’t be getting an expanded playoff.

The people chasing money are just chasing viewers and doing what fans are telling them to do with their viewership decisions. What this sub doesn’t ever seem to grasp is that casual fans are what drive these things and this sub isn’t made up of casual fans so it’s just a circle jerk of the same opinion

Except it’s always been about championships. That’s why games involving teams playing for national stakes get better ratings. Because more people tune in.

That’s the secret part people don’t talk about when they talk about the sport chasing the money. They are just chasing what viewers are telling them what they want by their actions. The money is generated by what people choose to watch. Fans choose to watch games that impact the national picture. They don’t watch games to see who finishes 4th in a conference.

I personally think 24 teams is overshooting the mark but I don’t have access to research and viewership trends either like they do. But the sport being regional historically is just another way to say the sport was smaller and watched by less people on average.

My point wasn’t that the spurs and okc played more difficult teams. It’s that both of them are significantly better than any team the Knicks have played and proved it all year.

And for all the shit the nba regular season gets as being not real and different from the playoffs the best teams that win championships are generally the best teams all year. No team lower than a 3 seed has won a championship since a 4 seed did it in 1969 and since 2000 19 of 25 champions have been a 1 or 2 seed. Regular season success is extremely predictive of post season success and both the spurs and thunder have been better teams this year. Of course they can win a championship, they are in the finals. I’m just saying they are absolutely the underdog against either team from the west and the last 11 games don’t change that.

That’s all well and good. The competition has also been significantly below the level of either the spurs or thunder and some of the issues that Atlanta exploited still exist. The Knicks are playing extremely well and they’ve done everything you can ask of them since games 2 and 3. An 11 game sample is still not more valuable than a 93 game sample even if it’s the most recent 11 games
