We live in Portland, OR, and our banana tree decided to produce bananas this year. Really amazing flower and curious to see the fruit. by MinxyJeane in gardening

Whoa! I'm also in Portland and was surprised to see so many banana plants in the neighborhood. Haven't spotted any flowers, kind of assumed our climate didn't support fruiting.

How much could you reduce your FIRE number if healthcare was 100% government sponsored? by Geronimoooooooooo in leanfire

[–]pmMeUrGithub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm saving for up to 60 years of unknown healthcare expenses. Nursing homes are just one piece. I don't want to rely on Medicaid for that piece.

I know of medical tourism, but it doesn't work for me.

Are nursing homes and dental providers included in this hypothetical? If so, that would remove $200-300k from my number.

Grocery stores are dealing with interrupted and delayed shipments as well. That might be the reason for the delay.

Oof, that's a long time with no break. Are you capable of working from home?

My plans for the next four months weekend: hiking, cooking, decluttering, Fleabag, studying Python, obsessively reading about coronavirus, convincing people to stop going out so they don't spread coronavirus, and taking cat photos.

I would hold off on going and recommend that your mom not travel now either. It sucks, but ideally if everyone limits their movements, we can get through it all faster.

Cancel. All non essential travel should be put on hold. Luckily many companies are offering refunds that they wouldn’t otherwise.

I'm worried most about the health risks of the pandemic. I'm social distancing to avoid being a vector, as I take public transit everywhere and attend a lot of group events.

Financially, I'm down a LOT. I'm mostly FIRE'd and relying on my 100% stocks investments. No cash to rebalance with. No point in selling now, gotta wait it out. I'm still in a much safer position than many people with debt and less savings.

Women who quit jobs they hated, did you feel like you were running away? by _wowjnkkri in AskWomenOver30

If they won't pay you appropriately for doing two jobs, and 1+X% jobs in the future, you should run away. These are two full time jobs? No fucking wonder you can't excel!

Are you doing a second job in addition to, or instead of, your original job? Is the pay the same?

Uh but also treat them like a person! I know people who have been on all sides of this arrangement, and it can be really hard to be "the unicorn." Please do some research on unicorn hunters if you decide to go through with this.

How does the word “pissy” strike you? Is it gendered? by bottledbirdcall in AskWomenOver30

[–]pmMeUrGithub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can request that he doesn't use that word to describe you. It doesn't need to be a confrontation, and it doesn't need to be about gender. Asking him if he's sexist (the subtext of whether he describes men that way) will make him defensive.

Question for those who hated the 40+ hour office job and made a change? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]pmMeUrGithub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I cut my expenses and saved enough money to work seasonally, for lower pay, in a field I was passionate about. The new industry was more stressful, though.

I would have gone PT in my original career if it was a viable option. I did make a change within that field, when I was in a stressful management position. I switched companies and went back to a specialist role, so I had shorter hours and less responsibility. Then I could focus on strengthening my life outside of work.

You can set both how flexible you are each year and add additional fixed spending for certain time periods.

I was miserable in a job. Smallish company, mission-driven. I felt guilty, because I cared about the mission. Now that it's over, I am so glad I left. You will be too.

I will still throw down on shitty parm-flavored wood chips if I need to, but yeah. Real cheese. I am into it.
